A new deep-sea genus of nannastacidae (Crustacea, cumacea) from the lucky strike hydrothermal vent field (Azores triple junction, mid-atlantic ridge) ArchiMer
Corbera, J; Segonzac, Michel; Cunha, M.
A new cumacean genus and species, Thalycrocuma sarradini gen. et sp. nov., belonging to the family Nannastacidae is described from several sites of the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 37N, 1700 m depth). The new genus differs from others in the family by males lacking exopods on the pereopods 3 and 4 and having an antenna with a five-articulate peduncle and a short flagellum. This is the first cumacean species that could be considered, at the moment, as endemic from hydrothermal vent areas. Data on the accompanying fauna including other cumacean species (Cyclaspis longicaudata, Bathycuma brevirostre, Procampylaspis sp. and Makrokylindrus sp.) and some ecological remarks are included. A key for the currently known genera of the...

Consequences du cycle de mue et d'intermue sur la morphologie fonctionnelle des pars molaris des Crustaces Peracarides. ArchiMer
Saudray, Yves.
The anatomy of the masticatory part of the mandible (the pars molaris) has been studied throughout the moult/intermoult cycle in some peracacarid crustacean species, by scanning electron microscopy. Species examined were: Ligia oceanica, Sphaeroma serratum, Idotea balthica, Talitrus saltator, Hyale nilssoni, Gammarid amphipoda and the mysid Pranus flexuosus. Feeding is known to decline near moulting; this may be because the chewing surfaces become loosened before moulting. Also the surfaces are worn down and useless, and feeding ceases. Very long intermoult periods, as found in old individuals, may thus cause long periods of starvation and this could enhance the symptoms of senescence.

Prorocentrum shikokuense Hada and P. donghaiense Lu are junior synonyms of P. obtusidens Schiller, but not of P. dentatum Stein (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae) ArchiMer
Shin, Hyeon Ho; Li, Zhun; Mertens, Kenneth; Seo, Min Ho; Gu, Haifeng; Lim, Weol Ae; Yoon, Yang Ho; Soh, Ho Young; Matsuoka, Kazumi.
In Japanese, Chinese and Korean coastal waters, recurrent blooms of a small, elongate Prorocentrum species have been observed in recent years. In previous studies, this species has been respectively identified as P. shikokuense, P. donghaiense and P. dentatum, despite morphological similarity and identical rDNA sequences. To resolve the confusion, morphological features, including the architectural details of the periflagellar area, were examined and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences were obtained from specimens collected from the East China Sea and Korean coast, and a strain established in the waters off the Canary Islands of Spain. In addition, the descriptions of the three species and allied species were reviewed. Morphological observations and a phylogeny...

In 2000 Ifremer launched and coordinated the development of a monitoring strategy for the REBENT network (REseau BENThique) in order to assess the aftermath of the “Erika” oil spill which took place in December 1999. Its aim is to provide consistent baseline knowledge on coastal benthic habitats, as well as to develop a monitoring tool that detects changes at various spatial and temporal scales. Sector-based seabed habitat mapping in shallow water (< 50 m deep), is currently being conducted throughout Brittany's coastal waters using a combination of geoacoustic marine systems together with ground-truthing using biological grab sampling and seabed observations. Due to the extended area, the overlap of soft and rocky bottoms, and contrasting hydrological...

Facteurs de contrôle sur le fonctionnement du système turbiditique du Rhône depuis le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire ArchiMer
Lombo Tombo, Swesslath.
Turbidite systems are accumulations of fluvial sediment on the continental margins. They are mainly made of « turbidites » deposited after the flow of turbidity currents inside submarine canyons and channels. Their structure and composition are controlled by global and regional environmental changes such as sea level and climate. The two fundamental parameters that govern their functioning are the production of sediment in the river watersheds and the capability and reactivity of the transfer to the turbidite system. In this work we show that for the last 24,000 years the functioning of the Rhone turbidite system has shown rapid changes under the control of sea level and sediment production fluctuations. Our results are based on a millennial time-scale...

Eivissa slides, western Mediterranean Sea: morphology and processes ArchiMer
Lastras, Galderic; Canals, M; Amblas, D; Ivanov, M; Dennielou, Bernard; Droz, Laurence; Akhmetzhanov, A.
After obtaining full-coverage swath bathymetry data in 1995 and very high-resolution acoustic profiles in 2002, four slides at the Balearic Margin of the Eivissa Channel in the western Mediterranean Sea were revisited in 2004 when side-scan sonar data were collected using a MAK-1M deep-towed acoustic system. These new findings, higher in resolution than those for the swath bathymetry, show two main features previously undetected within these submarine landslides: (1) a series of step-forming inclined and detached slabs oriented perpendicular to the slide movement and located in the uppermost part of the slides, and (2) arcuate regular positive ridges oriented also normal to the slide movement and located in the depositional lobes of some of the slides. Fortnightly tidal asymmetry inversions and perspectives on sediment dynamics in a macrotidal estuary (Charente, France) ArchiMer
Toublanc, Florence; Brenon, Isabelle; Coulombier, T.; Le Moine, Olivier.
Tidal asymmetry is a phenomenon that characterises estuarine hydrodynamics and has a strong impact on sediment dynamics. Extensive research has been dedicated to studying tidal dynamics in semidiurnal macrotidal estuaries, highlighting several general principles. The ratio of flood to ebb peak velocities and differences in ebb and flood durations are often used to characterise the asymmetry encountered in estuaries. In the Charente estuary (French Atlantic coast), water surface elevation data obtained using an ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) and a tide gauge show that the duration asymmetry undergoes inversions during the spring-neap tidal cycle. A two-dimensional hydrodynamics model is used to investigate the connection between spring-neap...

First report of goniodomin A production by the dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax developing in southern Mediterranean (Bizerte Lagoon, Tunisia) ArchiMer
Triki, Habiba Zmerli; Laabir, Mohamed; Moeller, Peter; Chomerat, Nicolas; Daly-yahia, Ons Kefi.
The dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax is widely distributed around the world including the Mediterranean waters. The objectives of this study were to determine the morphology and phylogenic affiliation of A. pseudogonyaulax strain isolated from Bizerte Lagoon (Mediterranean waters, Tunisia) and investigate its toxicity. Molecular analyses confirmed the morphological identification of the isolated strain (APBZ12) as A. pseudogonyaulax. Moreover, it showed that it is 100% identical with strains of this species found in New Zealand, Japan, China and North Sea (Norway and Denmark) suggesting that this species is cosmopolitan. Until now, no toxin studies have been conducted on fully characterized (morphologically and molecularly) A. pseudogonyaulax....

Species of the genus Galathea Fabricius, 1793 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Galatheidae) from the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with descriptions of 92 new species ArchiMer
Macpherson, Enrique; Robainas-barcia, Aymee.
The genus Galathea is one of the most speciose and unwieldy groups in the family Galatheidae. The examination of more than 9000 specimens of 144 species collected in the Indian and Pacific Oceans using morphological and molecular characters, has revealed the existence of 92 new species. The specimens examined during this study were obtained by various French expeditions supplemented by other collections from various sources, and including the type specimens of some previously described species. Most of the new species are distinguished by subtle but constant morphological differences, which are in agreement with molecular divergences of the mitochondrial markers COI and/or 16S rRNA.
