Dynamique hivernale des nutriments et du carbone dans les exutoires du Marais poitevin et flux terrestres associés en Baie de l’Aiguillon 5
Le Marchand, Marie.
Coastal environments represent key systems in biogeochemical cycle couplings between continents, oceans and the atmosphere. Despite its relatively modest surface area (7 % of global ocean), this zone accounts for 14-30 % of all oceanic primary production. The amount of nutrients (N, P, C, Si) carried by terrestrial aquatic systems directly influences the primary production, the food web structure and the overall quality of these coastal environments. The present study deals with autumn-winter carbon and nutrients dynamics over terrestrial waters of the Marais poitevin watershed flowing to the Aiguillon bay (west of France). Five heterogeneous watercourses were sampled twice a month since January 2017 to measure nutrients and carbon concentrations and...

Modélisation écologique tridimensionnelle (3D) de la baie de Seine (Manche, France) 5
Cugier, Philippe; Ménesguen, Alain; Guillaud, Jean-francois.
A three dimensional (3D) ecological model is developed and applied to the "baie de Seine" area. It consists of a 3D model for hydrodynamics and port (SiAM3D) coupled to an ecological model simulating nutrient cycles (nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon) and two phytoplanktonic classes (diatoms and flagellates). The model is validated by confronting simulations with nine year long series of measurements and then used to better understand the ecosystem functioning. It especially allows to show the role of the proportion of silicon with regard to nitrogen and phosphorus in the summer loadings of the Seine river on the more or less strong presence of flagellates in the river plume. The model was also used to test various hypotheses of reduction of nitrogen loading...

Origine et devenir de la matière organique au sein du micro-estuaire temporaire de Fiume Santu (L’Agriate, Haute-Corse) 5
Massey, Jean-laurent.
In relation with meteorological, hydrological and topographic characteristics, Corsica has a very large number of temporarily open/closed micro-estuaries. Agriates contains several of them, including the Fiume Santu’s temporarily micro-estuary. These ecosystems are specific because of their sporadic connection with the sea. The opening and closure depends on both the river flow and the presence of the Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile “banquettes”. Characterization of the global functioning was based on a multiparameter approach (particulate matter and dissolved inorganic matter descriptors, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope, phytoplankton communities), in order to qualify and quantify the organic matter (OM), along an estuary – coastal zone gradient. The OM...

Influence of Freshwater Discharges on Biogeochemistry and Benthic Communities of a Coral Reef Ecosystem (La Réunion Island, Indian Ocean) 5
Tedetti, Marc; Bigot, Lionel; Turquet, Jean; Guigue, Catherine; Ferretto, Nicolas; Goutx, Madeleine; Cuet, Pascale.
We investigated the influence of freshwater discharges on biogeochemistry and benthic communities of La Saline fringing reef, the largest coral reef system of La Réunion Island (France, Indian Ocean). Sampling was conducted in February–March 2012 along a land-ocean continuum, including rivers, groundwater, reef waters, and oceanic waters. Our results indicated the discharges of basalt groundwater (enriched in nitrates) in the southern part of the reef, and the discharges of sand groundwater and river waters (enriched in organic matter) in sites located northward. These discharges mainly impacted fore reef surface waters, while groundwater resurgences were more diffuse and not clearly detected in depth. We highlighted the relationship Si(OH)4/NO3– to...

Changes in the annual harmful algal blooms of Alexandrium minutum : effects of environmental conditions and drainage basin inputs in the Rance estuary (Brittany, France) 5
Le Bec, Claude; Legendre, Aurelie; Messiaen, Gregory.
Time series of physico-chemical data and concentrations (cell L-1) of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum collected in the Rance macrotidal estuary (Brittany, France) were analyzed to understand the physico-chemical processes of the estuary and their relation to changes in bloom development from 1996 to 2009. The construction of the tidal power plant in the north and the presence of a lock in the south have greatly altered hydrodynamics, blocking the zone of maximum turbidity upstream, in the narrowest part of the estuary. Alexandrium minutum occurs in the middle part of the estuary. Most physical and chemical parameters of the Rance estuary are similar to those observed elsewhere in Brittany with water temperatures between 15–18 °C, slightly...

Seasonal evolution of the nutrient pattern on Biscay Bay continental shelf over the years 1999-2000 5
Loyer, Sophie; Lampert, Luis; Menesguen, Alain; Cann, Philippe; Labasque, Thierry.
The French Atlantic shelf is Subjected to strong anthropic influences (urban, industrial and agricultural discharges) of two main rivers (Loire and Gironde). The extension and consequences of these continental loadings for the nutrient and chlorophyll distribution have never been studied before oil the Bay of Biscay continental shelf as a whole. We present the first synoptic view of the nutrient distribution and evolution oil the French Atlantic shelf. Nutrient concentrations of the surface layer were Studied during four cruises in April, June, September 1999 and March 2000. Until June, the freshwater inputs induce a nitrate gradient from river months to offshore waters in the vicinity of the 100 m isobath. The Redfield's ratio Study highlights the nitrate...

Dynamique du carbone et des nutriments dans la zone côtière Baie de l’Aiguillon-Pertuis Breton et influence des apports terrestres du bassin versant du Marais poitevin 5
Lannuzel, Reva.
Coastal zones represent key systems in biogeochemical cycle couplings between continents, oceans and the atmosphere transporting considerable amounts of matter, energy and nutrients (C, N, P et Si) from land to sea. Despite its relatively modest surface area (7 % of the global ocean surface), this zone accounts for 14–30 % of all oceanic primary production. The present study deals with nutrients and carbon dynamics during a full hydrologic cycle in 2017 over the terrestrial-aquatic continuum formed by the Poitevin Marsh-Aiguillon Bay- Breton Sound to better understand terrestrial export influence on the coastal zone. Assessment of the quantities of herbicides and nutrients brought down by the river Charente to the coast and modelling of the dispersion of atrazine in the Marennes-Oleron bay 5
Munaron, Dominique; Dubernet, Jf; Delmas, F; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Scribe, P.
Our study aims at making progress the estimate of herbicide and nutrient inputs to the Marennes-Oleron bay which could influence summer oysters mortalities, and to bring, a better understanding of the impact on coastal ecosystems by modelling the dynamics of these compounds in the shellfish-farming area. The development of a strategy adapted to the river Charente and its estuary reveals that agricultural activity on the watershed area is omnipresent, as well on the level of the nitrogen as on the one of herbicides contributions. It is thus necessary to specify Charente fluxes, which is the main tributary of the Marennes-Oleron bay, in order to better characterize its impact on shell fish-farming activity. Hydrodynamic modelling will constitute an...

Spatial variability in oxygen and nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface on the continental shelf in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) 5
Denis, L; Grenz, C.
The spatial variability of oxygen and dissolved nutrient exchanges across the sediment-water interface was studied on the continental shelf in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea). Replicate sediment cores were sampled at nine stations (64-162 m depth) along two lines parallel to the coast during two cruises in March and June 1998. Sediment-water exchanges were measured using the core incubation technique. Surficial sediments, bottom water and interstitial water characteristics were also described. Fluxes of oxygen (3.72-8.83 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), nitrate (0.026-0.283 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), ammonium (-0.022 to 0.204 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), nitrite (-0.034 to 0.002 mmol m(-2) d(-1)), phosphate (-0.007 to 0.029 mmol m(-2) d(-1)) and silicate (0.504-1.656 mmol m(-2)...

Accumulation des sels nutritifs dans un sédiment lagunaire et environnement hydrodynamique 5
Gomez, E; Millet, B; Picot, B.
The Mejean-Perols Lagoon is situated on the French Mediterranean coast. It is a small (747 ha) and shallow (70 cm) lagoon. Some treated effluent from Montpellier flows into this hypereutrophic lagoon. The cartography of C, N and P concentrations in the sediment was studied based on 35 bottom samples. The nitrogen and organic carbon concentrations were more or less homogeneous, the highest concentrations being found in the middle of the lagoon. The phosphate was principally bound onto the sediment in the west zone. The observed distribution was independent of grain size, the distribution of which was rather homogeneous. In this lagoon water circulation is wind induced. Four different water flow structures were observed, as functions of the prevailing winds...

The seasonal dynamics of nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations on the SE Mediterranean shelf-slope 5
Herut, Barak; Almogi-labin, Ahuva; Jannink, Natasja; Gertman, Isaac.
We report the results of a sequence of twelve research cruises over a two-year period, from June 1996 through May 1998 that examined the seasonal variations in the nutrient (NO(3)(-) PO(4)(3-), and Si(OH)(4)) and in the chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations at two permanent stations across the SE Mediterranean continental shelf and slope (120 and 400 m water depth off the Israeli coast). Seasonally-dependent Chl a concentrations ranged between 0.003 and 0.415 mg m(-3). Following autumn and winter a distinct biomass phytoplankton peak was produced (similar to 30 mg Chl a m(-2) in the upper 120 m) and a subsequent moderate spring peak was observed. In the decomposition zone (120-400 m), an opposite pattern was observed with decreasing amounts of NO(3)(-) and...

Environmental significance of microbialites in reef environments during the last deglaciation 5
Camoin, G; Cabioch, G; Eisenhauer, A; Braga, J; Hamelin, B; Lericolais, Gilles.
In situ microbialites occurring in reef rocks dredged between 80 and 130 in water depth on the modern fore-reef slopes of Tahiti and the Marquesas islands yield ages ranging from 17,100 2900 to 4410 2250 years BP, suggesting that they played a prominent role during the last deglacial sea level rise. Microbialites developed in both shallow and deep water depositional environments where they characterize various zones of the reef tracts (reef crests, upper reef slopes, deep fore-reef slopes), reflecting contrasting scenarios of microbialite development involving ''reefal microbialites'' in shallow-water settings and ''slope microbialites'' that formed in environments deeper than 1020 in and extending down to more than 100 m. Reefal microbialites...

La qualité des eaux dans l'Estuaire de la Gironde. 1- Traitement des données. 2 - Synthèse 5
Maurice, Laurence.
The main problem of the Girond estuary is a pollution by the cadmium. During this last ten years, the good quality of the water is proved by the analysis of the main physico - chemical and biochemical parameters and bacteria. But since 1989, straight to the Blayais power station, the BOD5 varied between 2 and 3,5 mg.l-1 and a diminution of the dissolved oxygen has been observed; it's probably caused by the accumulation of biodegradable organic matter in the maximum turbidity zone during years characterized by low river flows. For average river flow, urban discharges takes part for 20 % in total fluxes of BD05; in 1991, this part attempts 35 %. During the last 7 years, the pluriannual evolution of the nitrate concentrations measured in the Garonne river...

Decadal variability in chlorophyll and primary production off NW Spain 5
Bode, Antonio; Anadón, Ricardo; Anxelu G. Morán, Xosé; Nogueira, Enrique; Teira, Eva; Varela, Manuel.
Long-term variability of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and primary production (carbon fixation) in relation to changes in climatic and oceanographic factors was analysed for oceanic and shelf waters of the north and northwest Iberian Peninsula. Changes related to stratification in the water column and upwelling intensity were specifically addressed. The time series include measurements of primary production and biomass over 19 yr. Seasonally, the main mode of temporal variability of the series is the occurrence of phytoplankton blooms during the winter-spring and summer- autumn transition periods. On the northwestern coast (Galicia), the blooms are more frequent and attain higher biomass and production values than on the northern coast (Mar...

Variation in the composition of carbohydrates in the Dona Paula Bay (west of India) during May/June 1998 5
D'Souza, F; Bhosle, Nb.
Suspended particulate material was analysed for particulate carbohydrate concentration and composition and for the bulk parameters: suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen and particulate proteins. Chlorophyll a concentrations increased from May 7 to 15 due to the development of a small scale bloom of diatom Navicula sp. and decreased for the remaining period after the premonsoon rain on 16 and 17 May. Concentrations of particulate organic carbon, organic nitrogen, carbohydrates and proteins increased with the increase in chlorophyll a concentration. Together particulate protein-carbon and carbohydrate-carbon accounted for 10 to 30% of the organic carbon. Glucose contributed 26 to 81% to the...

Benthic metabolism over the emersion - Immersion alternation in sands colonized by the invasive Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum 5
Migne, Aline; Trigui, Rima Jihane; Davoult, Dominique; Desroy, Nicolas.
The effect of an invasive infaunal suspension-feeding bivalve, the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, on benthic inorganic carbon and nutrient fluxes was examined through in situ incubations. Measurements were performed in spring and summer on a tidal sandflat of the Rance estuary (south part of the Western English Channel) colonized by the Manila clam after its deliberate introduction in the 1990's. Benthic inorganic carbon fluxes were measured using light and dark benthic chambers both at emersion and immersion. Benthic nutrient fluxes were measured using dark benthic chambers at immersion. Inorganic carbon (IC) and ammonium sediment release under darkness at immersion reached 5.60 mmol m−2 h−1 and 441 μmol m−2 h−1 respectively for a clam density of...

Inter and intra-specific transcriptional and phenotypic responses of Pseudo-nitzschia under different nutrient conditions 5
Lema, Anais Kimberley; Metegnier, Gabriel; Quéré, Julien; Latimier, Marie; Youenou, Agnes; Lambert, Christophe; Fauchot, Juliette; Le Gac, Mickael.
Untangling the functional basis of divergence between closely related species is a step towards understanding species dynamics within communities at both the evolutionary and ecological scales. We investigated cellular (i.e: growth, domoic acid production, nutrient consumption) and molecular (transcriptomic analyses) responses to varying nutrient concentrations across several strains belonging to three species of the toxic diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Three main results were obtained. First, strains from the same species displayed similar transcriptomic, but not necessarily cellular, responses to the experimental conditions. It showed the importance of considering intra-specific diversity to investigate functional divergence between species. Second, a...

Fonctionnement des marais maritimes atlantiques: échanges d'énergie et effets des flux aquacoles diffus 5
Bel Hassen, Malika.
French estuaries, from the Atlantic coast to the English channel, have been characterized by a poor phytoplankton biomass. The turbidity has always been considered as the limiting factor for phytoplankton. Estuarine ecosystems are situated at the boundary between the land and the sea. Consequently, they are subject to an enrichment by nutrient loadings from upland ecosystems. Although it has been demonstrated that a part of the nutrient loadings support an important benthic production. The part, which escapes to the estuarine benthic and planktonic food web and is exported to adjacent estuarine ecosystems, still remains undetermined. Quantifying the nu trient and particulate matter exchange between a macrotidal Bay, the Fier d'Ars, and the adjacent ocean...

Nutrient scarcity strengthens soil fauna control over leaf litter decomposition in tropical rainforests 5
Peguero, Guille; Sardans, Jordi; Asensio, Dolores; Fernández-martínez, Marcos; Gargallo-garriga, Albert; Grau, Oriol; Llusià, Joan; Margalef, Olga; Márquez, Laura; Ogaya, Romà; Urbina, Ifigenia; Courtois, Elodie A.; Stahl, Clément; Van Langenhove, Leandro; Verryckt, Lore T.; Richter, Andreas; Janssens, Ivan A.; Peñuelas, Josep.
Soil fauna is a key control of the decomposition rate of leaf litter, yet its interactions with litter quality and the soil environment remain elusive. We conducted a litter decomposition experiment across different topographic levels within the landscape replicated in two rainforest sites providing natural gradients in soil fertility to test the hypothesis that low nutrient availability in litter and soil increases the strength of fauna control over litter decomposition. We crossed these data with a large dataset of 44 variables characterizing the biotic and abiotic microenvironment of each sampling point and found that microbe-driven carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) losses from leaf litter were 10.1 and 17.9% lower, respectively, in the nutrient-poorest site,...
