Infection of clams by Perkinsus olseni as an example of the new French Surveillance Programme ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Garcia, Celine; Arzul, Isabelle; Francois, Cyrille; Joly, Jean-pierre; Chollet, Bruno; Robert, Maeva; De Blas, Isabelle.
The French network for the surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) was officially set up in 1992 to control the shellfish status along the French coasts according to the European directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EC. The objectives are 1) the surveillance of notifiable diseases present in France (Bonamiosis and Marteiliosis of flat oysters Ostrea edulis), 2) the surveillance of health status of cultured and wild populations of molluscs, 3) the study of abnormal mortality and 4) the control of exchanges from European and third countries. In this context, a new surveillance programme, called Active Targeted Survey, part of the REPAMO, was applied in 2004 in order to improve the monitoring of the health status of the French mollusc populations...

A long term study of bonamiosis in Quiberon bay, France ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Blanchet, Estelle; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Berthe, Franck.
Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. One third of this spat is transferred from South to North Brittany for further growth. Quiberon bay constitutes an interesting site regarding the surveillance of bonamiosis because of the...

Pérez,Iván E; Chávez,Allison K; Ponce,Darío.
The purpose for the present study was to determine the frequency of sella turcica bridge and clinoid enlargement on lateral cephalometric plain film radiography from peruvians patients who attended our radiological center and identify any possible genre or age group associations. The sella turcica from 417 lateral cephalometric plain film radiography was evaluated in order to determine the presence of sella turcica bridge (fusion between the anterior and posterior clinoid process) or clinoid enlargement related to the Sella (S) cephalometric point. The sella turcica bridge and clinoid enlargement frequency was 4.31% (n=18), and 16.3% (n=68). Cramer´s V and ETA statistics found, by separately, non significant association (p > 0.05) between sella turcica...

The aim of this study was to analyze changes in the skeletal muscle tissue of rats after muscle stretch injury using fractal analysis. Nineteen rats were divided into three groups, Control (n= 5) (C), Lesion two days (n= 7) (L2), and Lesion seven days (n= 7) (L7). Histological slides of the gastrocnemius muscle of the animals were prepared and stained with Hematoxylin and eosin for analysis of the inflammatory process, and picrosirius for the demonstration of collagen. The stained slides were subsequently analyzed using Fractal Dimension (FD). The results showed high FD values of the inflammatory process in the experimental groups L2 and L7 in relation to C (p= 0.000). The analysis of collagen in the picrosirius stained slides showed high FD in the L2...

Immunopathology of rabies infection in mice selected for high or low acute inflammatory reaction J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Achkar,S. M.; Sinhorini,I. L.; Ribeiro,O. G.; Carrieri,M. L.; Ceretta,R. S.; Consales,C. A..
Rabies is a severe and lethal disease that produces a slight inflammatory response during the infection process. We analyzed the immunopathological mechanisms that occur in the central nervous system (CNS) using mice genetically selected for maximal or minimal acute inflammatory reaction (AIRmax or AIRmin). As viral samples, we adopted the antigenic variant 3 (AgV3) of rabies virus from hematophagous bats and a fixed virus strain (PV1 43/3). Titration of specific antibodies was performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We observed a slight increase in IgG and IgG1 isotypes in infected AIRmax mice. Incubation period, determined by intracerebral inoculation with 100 LD50, was 6-7 days for PV1 43/4 strain and 9-10 days for AgV3. No difference...

Metaplasia in swim bladder epithelium of the endangered annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) results in inadequate swimming and delayed growth Neotropical Ichthyology
Fonseca,Alinca Peres da; Volcan,Matheus Vieira; Romano,Luís Alberto; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
ABSTRACT Laboratory breeding of annual fish is often impaired when fish fail to inflate the swim bladder after hatching. These fish, which are known as belly-sliders, cannot swim in the water column, moving mainly on the bottom of water. Therefore, we wanted to understand the factors underlying failed inflation of swim bladder in the annual fish Austrolebias nigrofasciatus and determine the implications of this condition on the growth of juveniles. To identify how the initial filling of the gaseous vesicle is compromised, and to determine the implications of this condition on juvenile growth, we analysed the histology of the swim bladder of both normal swimming fish and belly-sliders during their initial growth phase (first month of life). In addition to...

Kidney anatomy, histology and histometric traits associated to renosomatic index in Gymnotus inaequilabiatus (Gymnotiformes: Gymnotidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Fernandes,Carlos Eurico; Marcondes,Sandrieley Fernanda; Galindo,Gizela Melina; Franco-Belussi,Lilian.
ABSTRACT The Gymnotus inaequilabiatus is a Neotropical fish widely distributed in marginal areas of bays. The aim of this study was to describe the main histological and histopathological traits in the head and exocrine kidney. Here, histometric and structural density techniques were associated with renosomatic index (RSI). The kidney was processed for light microscopy. Lipofuscin and hemosiderin content were visually estimated in the melonomacrophages centers (MMCs). All the biometric body variables were correlated with RSI, especially the kidney weight and gross lesions count. The general architecture of head and exocrine kidney was similar to that described for other teleost species. MMCs were prevalent in both portions and correlated with RSI in the...

First Case of Echinococcus multilocularis Infection in a Zoo-Housed Flying Squirrel (Pteromys volans orii) OAK
OIKAWA, Eri; SHIMURA, Ryoji; NISHIMURA, Maki; FURUOKA, Hidefumi; 古岡, 秀文.
A 33 month-old male flying squirrel kept in a zoo developed progressive dyspnea and died. Macroscopically, the liver and lung were enlarged with numerous nodular vesicles. Histologically, these organs were replaced by numerous collapsed vesicles demarcated by fibrous tissues. The cysts lined by a cellular, germinal layer contained numerous brood capsules with abundant production of well-developed protoscolices. Protoscolices were about 80–100 μm in diameter, and had hooks being visible as refractive structures. This zoo locates in the east of Hokkaido where is an endemic area of Echinococcus multilocularis infection. From epidemiology and pathological findings, this animal was diagnosed as E.multilocularis infection. This report describes the pathology of...

A preliminary study of the aetiology, epizootiology and pathology of 'rusty-yellow' skin discolouration of tilapia species (Oreochromis niloticus and Tilapia zilli OceanDocs
Oladosu, H.A.; Ayinla, O.A.; Ajiboye, M.O.; Egbomuche, G.; Onuoha, G.C..
An upsurge in the prevalence of rusty-yellow discoloration of the skin of the two tilapia species, being cultured at the African Regional Aquaculture Centre (ARAC), gave a basis for an urgent clinical and epizootiological studies of the condition. The studies were therefore carried out along with the performance of some catfishes in polyculture with Oreochromis niloticus, under the integrated poultry cum fish farming system. It was observed that this condition affects the tilapia species only, and the antemortem, and postmortem examination revealed that the discolouration is restricted to the surface of the cutaneous tissue; affecting the underside of the exposed part of the scales, the fins and the skin flap covering the scale pockets, mostly in adult...
