Welfare distribution and poverty in Uganda, 1992 to 2000 AgEcon
Okidi, John A.; Okwi, Paul O.; Ddumba-Ssentamu, John.
This study covers a period of far-reaching economic reform policies and programs in Uganda. Measures of inequality and stochastic dominance analysis are applied to a series of regionally representatives national household surveys data to shed light on the patterns of inter-temporal changes in levels and distribution of welfare in Uganda. Stochastic dominance analysis of welfare distribution reveals that Ugandan households were better off in 2000 and 1997 than in 1992 irrespective of the choice of a poverty line. Using a sub-regional panel data set that was constructed on the basis of rural/urban categorization we estimate elasticities of poverty with respect to growth to illustrate that deliberate policies focusing on welfare distribution would...

Dynamic oligopoly: estimation and tests of market structure AgEcon
Karp, Larry S.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
A linear-quadratic dynamic oligopoly model is developed and applied to the world coffee export market. The model nests various market structures using either open-loop or feedback strategies. The theoretical properties of this model are described. For given observed behavior, the assumption of feedback strategies implies a less competitive market structure than open-loop strategies.

Economic Growth in the Philippines: A Spatial Econometrics Analysis at the Provincial Level, 1991 – 2000. AgEcon
Pede, Valerien O.; Huelgas, Zenaida M.; Villano, Lorena; Garcia, Cornelia; McKinley, Justin D.; Mohanty, Samarendu.
Investigating the determinants of economic growth remains a long research tradition in the economic growth literature. Most studies in this literature have tried to link economic growth and different economic factors using either neoclassical growth theories or endogenous growth approaches. These studies apply these growth theories to identify the factors responsible for the observed differences/disparities between regions or countries. While early studies focused on cross-country analyses, the recent most studies consider regions or sub-national entities as unit of analysis. This has raised the question of whether theories developed for cross-country analysis could be automatically applied for regional or sub-national analysis. Given the profound...

NON-PARAMETRIC AND SEMI-PARAMETRIC TECHNIQUES FOR MODELING AND SIMULATING CORRELATED, NON-NORMAL PRICE AND YIELD DISTRIBUTIONS: APPLICATIONS TO RISK ANALYSIS IN KANSAS AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Featherstone, Allen M.; Kastens, Terry L..
Parametric, non-parametric, and semi-parametric approaches are commonly used for modeling correlated distributions. Semi-parametric and non-parametric approaches are used to examine the risk situation for Kansas agriculture. Results from the model indicate that 2000 will be another difficult year for Kansas farmers, although crop income will increase slightly from 1999. However, unless another supplemental infusion of government payments occurs, crop income is expected to be the lowest since 1992.

Weather, Technology, and Corn and Soybean Yields in the U.S. Corn Belt AgEcon
Tannura, Michael A.; Irwin, Scott H.; Good, Darrel L..
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between weather, technology, and corn and soybean yields in the U.S. Corn Belt. Corn and soybean yields, monthly temperature, and monthly precipitation observations were collected over 1960 through 2006 for Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. Multiple regression models were developed based on specifications found in studies by Thompson (1962 1963 1969 1970 1985 1986 1988). Estimated models explained at least 94% and 89% of the variation in corn and soybean yields for each state, respectively. Analysis of the regression results showed that corn yields were particularly affected by technology, the magnitude of precipitation during June and July, and the magnitude of temperatures during July and August....

A SYSTEMS APPROACH FOR EVALUATING ON-FARM SITE-SPECIFIC MANAGEMENT TRIALS: A CASE STUDY WITH VARIABLE RATE MANURE AND CROP QUALITY RESPONSE TO INPUTS AgEcon
Lambert, Dayton M.; Lowenberg-DeBoer, James; Malzer, Gary L..
Site-specific application of manure has the potential to improve crop production and environmental quality. If manure is applied where it is needed, in the quantity required by the crop, over application, with attendant runoff and leaching problems can be reduced. To implement this approach growers need site-specific crop response information. Increasing availability of site-specific yield information offers a way to estimate such crop responses. The objective of this study is to develop a methodology for estimating site-specific response of corn and soybeans to manure given soil test information, and to use that methodology to analyze an on-farm manure management trial conducted near Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. Both quantity and quality of the crop is...

Speaking Stata: On numbers and strings AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
The great divide among data types in Stata is between numeric and string variables. Most of the time, which kind you want to use for particular variables is clear and unproblematic, but surprisingly often, users face difficulties in making the right decision or need to convert variables from one kind to another. The main problems that may arise and their possible solutions are surveyed with reference both to official Stata and to user-written programs.

GLOBAL OPTIMIZATION METHODS AgEcon
Hamm, Lonnie; Brorsen, B. Wade.
Training a neural network is a difficult optimization problem because of numerous local minimums. Many global search algorithms have been used to train neural networks. However, local search algorithms are more efficient with computational resources, and therefore numerous random restarts with a local algorithm may be more effective than a global algorithm. This study uses Monte-Carlo simulations to determine the relative efficiency of a local search algorithm to 9 stochastic global algorithms. The computational requirements of the global algorithms are several times higher than the local algorithm and there is little gain in using the global algorithms to train neural networks.

ADULT EQUIVALENT SCALES REVISITED AgEcon
Demoussis, Michael; Mihalopoulos, Vassilis.
Use of the Tobit model for estimation of adult equivalent scale (AES) parameters and expenditure equations presupposes that zero observations represent exclusively corner solutions. This paper tests for the underlying causes of zero observations and estimates accordingly the AES parameters, the household size in adult equivalents and the resulting expenditure equations and consumption profiles. The empirical application concerns Greek household "soft" and "hard" cheese consumption. The statistical results indicate that for the examined cheese categories the "double hurdle participation" model adjusted for non-normality and heteroskedasticity is the appropriate model for the estimation of AES parameters and expenditure equations.

More than Mean Effects: Modeling the Effect of Climate on the Higher Order Moments of Crop Yields AgEcon
Tack, Jesse B.; Harri, Ardian; Coble, Keith H..
The objective of this article is to propose the use of moment functions and maximum entropy techniques as a flexible way to estimate conditional crop yield distributions. We present a moment based model that extends previous approaches in several dimensions, and can be easily estimated using standard econometric estimators. Upon identification of the yield moments under a variety of climate and irrigation regimes, we utilize maximum entropy techniques to analyze the distributional impacts from switching regimes. We consider the case of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas upland cotton to demonstrate how climate and irrigation affect the shape of the yield distribution, and compare our findings to other moment based approaches. We empirically illustrate...

Speaking Stata: Spineplots and their kin AgEcon
Cox, Nicholas J..
The term spineplot has been applied over the last decade or so to a type of bar chart used particularly for showing frequencies, proportions, or percentages of two cross-classified categorical variables. The principle is that the areas of rectangular tiles are proportional to the frequencies in the cells of a contingency table. Often both coarse and fine structure are easy to see, including departures from independence. The main idea has, in fact, been rediscovered repeatedly over at least the last 130 years. In its most general form, it has been widely publicized under the name mosaic plots. This column introduces, discusses, and exemplifies a Stata implementation of spineplots. It is noted that a restriction to two variables is more apparent than real,...

CONTINGENT VALUATION FOCUS GROUPS: INSIGHTS FROM ETHNOGRAPHIC INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES AgEcon
Johnston, Robert J.; Weaver, Thomas F.; Smith, Lynn A.; Swallow, Stephen K..
Despite the many important uses (and potential abuses) of focus groups in survey design, the CV literature presents few guidelines to aid moderators in their interaction with focus group participants. This paper draws on the theory and practice of ethnographic interviewing to introduce general guidelines that can improve focus groups as an aid to CV research. The proposed guidelines illustrate types of questions that should reduce speculation and moderator-introduced bias in focus group responses, and improve the correspondence between focus group responses and actual behavior. The paper illustrates these ethnographic guidelines through a CV application concerning watershed resources.

Methodische Ansätze zur Quantifizierung der Arbeitsplatzeffekte von Maßnahmen zur ländlichen Entwicklung AgEcon
Margarian, Anne.
