Storage, size and vigor of ‘Esther’ avocado seeds (Persea americana Mill.) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gálvez-Cendegui,Luisa; Peñaloza,Patricia; Oyanedel,Eduardo; Castro,Mónica.
Avocado seeds present high size variability. Larger seeds, such those of the ‘Esther’ variety, are preferred when nurse seeds are used. Even though they are considered recalcitrant seeds, they are stored for propagation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of three storage periods and three sizes of ‘Esther’ avocado seeds on vigor, in terms of electrolyte leakage, and seedling length and diameter. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized factorial design. The factors were time in storage (10, 30 and 100 d at 5 °C and 80% relative humidity) and seed size (small, medium and large). Electrolyte leakage was evaluated as a measure of seed vigor, growth and later development of the...

The influence of seed coating on the vigor and early seedling growth of barley Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Corlett,Francisco M.F; Rufino,Cassyo de A; Vieira,Jucilayne F; Tavares,Lizandro C; Tunes,Lilian V.M; Barros,Antonio C.S.A.
Seed coating is a process in which a thin and uniform polymer layer is deposited on the surface of a seed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the vigor of barley seed coated with a commercial polymer and various combinations of calcium, silicon and fungicide. In addition to a control with only the polymer coating, a total of 17 seed coating treatments were used in a completely randomized factorial design (18 treatments × 4 replicates per treatment). Calcium and silicon were applied at concentrations of 0, 25 or 50 g kg¹ of seed, and 0 or 3.0 mL of fungicide was applied. The means were compared using a Duncan test (P≤0.05). The results showed that a coating of polymer, fungicide, calcium and silicon did not affect the physiological...

Germination, viability and longevity of horseweed (Conyza spp.) seeds as a function of temperature and evaluation periods Ciência Rural
Agostinetto,Dirceu; Vargas,Andrés Antonio Monge; Ruchel,Queli; Silva,Jéssica Dias Gomes da; Vargas,Leandro.
ABSTRACT: In Brazil, horseweed is one of the most important weeds because of the resistance to herbicides and high competitive for the crops. A large of losses were reported in major crops such as soybeans, wheat and corn, where the use a no-tillage system and the herbicide resistance promote better establishment. A correct understanding of the way temperature influences germination enables the prediction of the regions with the highest potential for colonization by this weed and thus facilitates its control. The objective of this study; therefore, was to discern the ways temperature affected the germination, viability and longevity of horseweed seeds. Testing was done at 10, 20 and 30°C, while evaluation occurred on days 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60. Seeds were...

Productivity and quality of Brachiaria brizantha B4 seeds in function of nitrogen doses Ciência Rural
Benteo,Gleiciane de Lima; Verzignassi,Jaqueline Rosemeire; Fernandes,Celso Dornelas; Valle,Cacilda Borges do; Macedo,Manuel Cláudio Motta; Libório,Cláudia Barrios de; Monteiro,Lenise Castilho.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate aspects of reproductive phenology, yield components and seed quality of the B4 genotype of Brachiaria brizantha in function of nitrogen doses applied at pre-flowering. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Beef Cattle, in a randomized block design, with seeding density of 2.59kg SPV ha-1 in the first year, in free growth plants. Urea was applied at pre-flowering at doses of 0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150kg ha-1. The reproductive cycle of the plant lasts 225 days, with late flowering. N doses influenced the following characteristics: number of fully expanded inflorescences, percentage of dry matter, dry biomass, number of spikelets per raceme, seed yield, weight of a thousand seeds, germination, germination speed...

Coating seeds with fertilizer: A promising technique for forage crop seeds Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Baroni,Danilo Força; Vieira,Henrique Duarte.
ABSTRACT Fertilization is not a common management practice at pasture establishment in Brazil. Seed coating technology can be a useful approach to ensure the availability of nutrients to plants during the early stages of development. Thus, the objective of this work was to investigate the incorporation of liquid fertilizer in seeds of Stylosanthes and to evaluate the effect of this technology on seed quality. Mastermins® fertilizer was applied to the last layer of the binder material coating on the seed and Polyseed 76F polymer adhesive was thereafter applied onto the fertilizer. Physiological and biometric analyses of the seeds were carried out. Six fertilizer doses (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mL.100 g seeds-1) were tested, with and without adhesive. The...

Physiological quality and amylase enzyme expression in maize seeds Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Oliveira,Gustavo Evangelista; Pinho,Renzo Garcia Von; Andrade,Thaís de; Pinho,Édila Vilela de Resende Von; Santos,Custódio Donizete dos; Veiga,Adriano Delly.
The physiological quality of maize seeds is affected by the genotype. Thus, the study of expression of genes associated with this characteristic is important in the genotype selection process in breeding programs. The aim of this research was to study the expression of amylase enzymes associated with physiological quality of maize seeds with different genotypes and seed sizes. We further sought to assess the expression of these enzymes in dry and soaked seeds The experiment was conducted in the experimental area and the Central Seed Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture of the Universidade Federal de Lavras. Seeds of four maize inbred lines were used, classified in two sizes. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated by means of...

Selection of common bean inbred lines with tolerance to high moisture at harvest Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Lima,Lidiane Kely de; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa.
The occurrence of precipitation / rain in harvest bean causes damage to the product and reduces the yield. The main alternative to mitigate this problem is to obtain cultivars presenting low germination of beans in the pods under conditions of high moisture. The purpose of this study was to verify if there is genetic variability among the common bean inbred lines that are in the phase of recommendation for the South of Minas Gerais, Brazil in regard to tolerance to moisture after harvest, and identify traits that may be routinely used in selection of tolerant lines to these conditions. Ninety-five lines in the phase of recommendation by the Genetic Breeding Program from UFLA were used. After harvest, a sample of plants from each plot was removed for...
