Process design and sustainability in the production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic materials Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Scott,Felipe; Quintero,Julián; Morales,Marjorie; Conejeros,Raúl; Cardona,Carlos; Aroca,Germán.
Background: Bioethanol is produced mainly from sugar cane and corn. In the last years it has been subject of debate due to the effects in food prices and land use change. The use of lignocellulosic materials for bioethanol production, such as agroindustry, forestry and municipal residues, wood or dendroenergetic species, has been proposed as a sustainable way for producing this biofuel. The design of a sustainable process for producing bioethanol requires a methodological approach whereby economical, environmental and social criteria are systematically integrated from the early stages of process design. Results: Until now a methodology for guiding the design of a sustainable process for bioethanol production is not available, and there are just a few...

BIOGAS YIELD AND PRODUCTIVENESS OF SWINE MANURE FOR DIFFERENT REACTOR CONFIGURATIONS REA
Lins,Marcos A.; Steinmetz,Ricardo L. R.; Amaral,André C. do; Kunz,Airton.
ABSTRACT The progression of the organic loading rate (OLR) up to a certain limit increases biogas production. The limit and operation range vary according to the configuration of the reactor and are associated with other variables that generate different results with respect to biogas yield (BY) and biogas productiveness (BP). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the OLR on the BY and BP from swine manure in continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors (UASBs). In the assay with the CSTR, the best operational condition was at an OLR of 0.7 gVS add L−1 reactor d−1 and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 18 days. At this operational condition, 0.8 LN biogas gVS add−1 of BY and 0.6 LN biogas L−1...

PHYSICAL, MECHANICAL AND THERMAL BEHAVIOUR OF ADOBE STABILIZED WITH THE SLUDGE OF WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS REA
Gandia,Rômulo M.; Gomes,Francisco C.; Corrêa,Andréa A. R.; Rodrigues,Maykmiller C.; Marin,Diego B..
ABSTRACT The need for treated water is essential for life. With the constant increase in population, the most common way to purify surface water is through conventional water treatment plants (WTPs). The high volume of residue (sludge) generated in this process is most often returned to the catchment site, negatively affecting the ecosystem. The sludge of WTPs is similar to soil because it is composed of inorganic solids. Adobe is a construction material made from water and soil without the burning process, so it is considered sustainable, recyclable, and energy-efficient and can be stabilized with various materials. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop adobes using the sludge of WTPs and to analyse their physical, mechanical and thermal...

Baby leaf lettuce production in trays with reused and solarized substrate Horticultura Brasileira
Moraes,Lívia AS; Calori,Alex H; Factor,Thiago L; Patrício,Flávia RA; Ghini,Raquel; Abreu,Monica F; Purquerio,Luis FV.
ABSTRACT Concerning the baby leaf production in trays, substrate can be reused for a certain number of times depending on its chemical and physical characteristics, but populations of pathogens such as Pythium aphanidermatum and Rhizoctonia solani that can cause damping off of lettuce, can build up during the reuse of this substrate. Solar treatment in a solar collector can be an alternative for the disinfestation of these substrates. Thus, the objective of this research was to study the reuse of coconut fiber substrate and its solar treatment in solar collector on baby leaf lettuce production. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a factorial scheme 4 (first-use substrate, reused once, reused twice and reused three times) x 2 (with and without...

Manure effect on the incidence of rose diseases in the Integrated Production System Horticultura Brasileira
Ribeiro,Márcia NO; Almeida,Elka FA; Reis,Simone N; Carvalho,Livia M; Figueiredo,Júnia RM; Ribeiro Júnior,Pedro M.
ABSTRACT Deficiency, excess or imbalance in the combinations of nutritional elements can influence the response of plants to pathogen infection by either increasing the level of defense or favoring the occurrence of diseases. The rose is susceptible to several pathogens and the consumer market requires flower stalks with no level of damage. Therefore, in the production of roses the application of pesticides is performed in a preventive and intensive way, which causes environmental contamination. This study evaluated the effects of chemical fertilization management and intercropping with green manure on the incidence and severity of downy mildew and powdery mildew in rosebushes grown in an Integrated Production System. The experiment was conducted in a...

Braulio,Caliane da S; Nóbrega,Rafaela SA; Silva,Luís Cláudio V; Correia,Andreza de J; Sousa,Cheila BC de; Pereira,Elisângela G.
ABSTRACT Inoculating crops with diazotrophic bacteria constitutes a feasible biotechnological tool to reduce or even avoid the use of nitrogen fertilizers and to improve the nutritional status of crops. However, the potential use of such technology is limited due to the lack of studies in diverse vegetable crops. We evaluated the production of chicory (Cichorium intybus) in response to inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria in two soil classes. The experiments were performed under greenhouse conditions and under a completely randomized design. The treatments were constituted by strains UFRB FA34C2-2, UFLA 03-84 and INPA 0311B, and two control treatments (devoid of bacterial inoculation and with and without nitrogen fertilization). Two experiments were...

Reuse water and urban horticulture: alliance towards more sustainable cities Horticultura Brasileira
Bizari,Douglas R; Cardoso,Jean C.
ABSTRACT The need to rethink current models of using water resources in the various sectors of human activity is escalating, as thousands of people in different regions of the world are suffering from clean water shortage for their basic daily needs. In this context, the use of recycled water from treated domestic sewage in agricultural activities is gaining ground. Reuse water can combine environmental protection and high agricultural productivity, especially for simultaneously carrying plant nutrients and minimizing demands for catching "noble" fresh water from streams and water sources for irrigation, currently the highest water consuming activity. The increasing urbanization contributes to generate, but also to foster the treatment and use of...
