Background: Bioethanol is produced mainly from sugar cane and corn. In the last years it has been subject of debate due to the effects in food prices and land use change. The use of lignocellulosic materials for bioethanol production, such as agroindustry, forestry and municipal residues, wood or dendroenergetic species, has been proposed as a sustainable way for producing this biofuel. The design of a sustainable process for producing bioethanol requires a methodological approach whereby economical, environmental and social criteria are systematically integrated from the early stages of process design. Results: Until now a methodology for guiding the design of a sustainable process for bioethanol production is not available, and there are just a few... |

The aim of this study was to analyze, under the energetic point of view, the cultivation of corn in three management systems (low, medium and high-tech), using two landrace varieties ('Argentino' and 'BR da Várzea'), a double hybrid cultivar (SHS 4080) and a simple hybrid (IAC 8333). Five performance indicators were used: energy efficiency, liquid cultural energy, cultural efficiency, energy balance and productive energy efficiency. From the perspective of family farming, it was verified the largest social importance of the systems under low and medium levels of technology, due to the increase employment capacity of rural labor. The liquid cultural energy and energy balance were more favorable for the system under high technological level, unlike cultural... |

Citrus orchards are very important in Brazil, especially in São Paulo State, where occupy an area of 600,000 ha approximately. To identify sustainability degree of citrus production system, an energy analysis allows evaluating efficiency of direct and indirect applied inputs. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate citrus production system under energetic point of view, in which invested energy is paid back with citrus production; being compared within three scenarios for operational field efficiency. As result, by sensitivity analysis was determined that fuel was the main energy demander, followed by pesticides and fertilizers. In operational work capacity analysis, all combinations between efficiency (minimum, typical and maximum) and yield levels became... |

The deep bedding is a swine alternative production, especially in the finishing phase, whose byproduct can be recycled, reducing the environmental impact. The objectives of this study were to characterize the ash coming from the controlled burning of the swine deep bedding (SDBA) based on rice husk, and to evaluate their performance in composites as a partial substitute for Portland cement (PC). To measure the differences between SDBA and rice husk ash (RHA) as a reference, we have characterized: particle size distribution, real specific density, x-ray diffraction, electrical conductivity, scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis and loss on ignition. Samples were prepared for two experimental series: control, and another one with the partial... |

Three growing systems of Arabica coffee were evaluated under the energy perspective, in the state of Espírito Santo in Brazil. The systems are conventional cultivation (CC), cultivation with good agricultural practices (CGP) and organic farming (OF). It was made a comparison of the energy flows within these three systems to show sustainable levels of each one based on production average data of several family-farming units. Therefore, we analyzed crop yield, total energy efficiency reverse (TEER), energy efficiency of ripe coffee (EERC) and non-renewable energy efficiency (NREE). OF system had values for TEER, EERC and NREE of 3.3 4.7 and 7.9 respectively. Yet CC showed values of 1.8, 1.9 and 1.6 for TEER, EERC and NREE respectively. Furthermore, CGP... |

ABSTRACT Adobe is an efficient construction material for several reasons, such as its thermal comfort, sustainability, and lower energy cost, as well as the simplicity of its production and execution. However, challenges such as water absorption, capillarity, and compressive strength should be investigated to improve its physical and mechanical properties. “Synthetic termite saliva” (STS) is an excellent stabilizer with high cohesive and hydrophobic power. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of STS incorporation into adobe, analyzing its physical, mechanical and thermal properties. Five treatments were studied: 0 (control); 0.1; 0.2; 0.4 and 0.8% STS by mass. These adobe samples were evaluated according to bulk density, linear... |

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of fertilization with composted sewage sludge and irrigation with drinking water (DW) and fertigation with wastewater (WW) in wheat crop using fuzzy rule-based system. The experiment was conducted in the Department of Soil and Environmental Resources, of FCA, UNESP - Botucatu, with factorial 6 × 2, which were applied 6 doses of sewage sludge (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250% of nitrogen recommendation) and two types of effluents (treated water and sewage). In the developing of the system based in fuzzy rules, it was used the Mamdani inference method, where the input variables were sewage sludge doses and water types and the output variables used were the number of tillers, length and number spike per plant;... |

ABSTRACT The need for treated water is essential for life. With the constant increase in population, the most common way to purify surface water is through conventional water treatment plants (WTPs). The high volume of residue (sludge) generated in this process is most often returned to the catchment site, negatively affecting the ecosystem. The sludge of WTPs is similar to soil because it is composed of inorganic solids. Adobe is a construction material made from water and soil without the burning process, so it is considered sustainable, recyclable, and energy-efficient and can be stabilized with various materials. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop adobes using the sludge of WTPs and to analyse their physical, mechanical and thermal... |

The objective is to analyze characteristic aspects of different structures of Agricultural Extension (ATER), represented by the Institute of Agricultural Extension (EMATER-RN), and by the Dom Helder Câmara Project (PDHC) in agrarian reform settlements in the Territory of Citizenship Sertão do Apodi, in state of the Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The focus group technique was applied, as a qualitative research tool with full commitment to the comprehensive meta-scientific perspective. This is a qualitative research with interviews guided by a semi-structured script with territorial leaders, implementing organizations and direct beneficiaries of ATER actions carried out by EMATER and DHCP. The research results, after analyzing the different structures of ATER,... |

ABSTRACT Studies on plant nutrition are essential for a correct fertilizer management, improving yield and quality of the product, and it also may contribute for an updating recommendation. The aim of this study was to evaluate growth, nutrient accumulation and export, thermal sum and yield of zucchini cultivar Corona F1. The experiment was carried out from August 8 to October 25, 2013, in Santo Antônio de Posse, São Paulo State. At the end of the research, 84 days after transplanting (DAT), we observed 95 cm average height with 36 leaves and 45.8 t ha-1 maximum yield. The nutrient accumulation, in g plant-1, was: N (14.2) > K (9.3) > Ca (8.0) > Mg (2.5) > S (1.2) > P (0.9) and in mg plant-1, Mn (49.3) > Fe (34.9) > Zn (19.6) > B... |

ABSTRACT Concerning the baby leaf production in trays, substrate can be reused for a certain number of times depending on its chemical and physical characteristics, but populations of pathogens such as Pythium aphanidermatum and Rhizoctonia solani that can cause damping off of lettuce, can build up during the reuse of this substrate. Solar treatment in a solar collector can be an alternative for the disinfestation of these substrates. Thus, the objective of this research was to study the reuse of coconut fiber substrate and its solar treatment in solar collector on baby leaf lettuce production. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a factorial scheme 4 (first-use substrate, reused once, reused twice and reused three times) x 2 (with and without... |
