There are a large number of international organizations, initiatives and projects supporting organic agriculture throughout the world. Local initiatives have been undertaken for more than 25 years. This chapter includes a not exhaustive list of private and public initiatives that render support to organic agriculture development. In addition, there are a large number of joint international projects, which are not mentioned in this article, but are also of great importance for the development of organic agriculture. Both private and public development initiatives contributed considerably in the last 25 years to the growth of the organic sector in many countries of the world, through: • The development of national organic movements; • Building capacities... |

Organic agriculture in Australia is a success story. Certified organic agriculture in Australia accounts for 35.6 million hectares which is 8.8% of Australia’s agricultural land. The rate of growth of organics in Australia has been16.5% per annum for the past two decades. Based on certified hectares, Australia is now the world leader in organics, and now accounts for more than fifty percent of the world’s certified organic hectares. The development of organic agriculture throughout Australia has been somewhat uneven. The map of organic agriculture in Australia, reveals that South Australia and Queensland are the standout leaders based on certified hectares. Western Australia is underperforming on this metric (as are also Victoria and Tasmania). The map... |

This paper investigates the law of motion for the cross-section distribution of dietary energy supply (DES) in the world. This has been pursued using the distribution approach and a panel of 152 countries for the period 1961-2001. According to the empirical results, persistence in caloric intakes dominates in the short-run. With time, however, upwards mobility gains momentum and the world is moving towards a long-run distribution, which is strongly skewed to the left. The estimated expected first passage times from extreme under-supply to higher intake levels are consistent with speculations that most of the developing countries will attain the 3000 kcal per person per day level by the year 2030. |

Leptospirosis is an acute anthropo-zoonotic infection of worldwide significance caused by spirochaete Leptospira interrogans which has 23 serogroups and >200 serovars. Various factors influencing the animal activity, suitability of the environment for the survival of the organism and behavorial and occupational habits of human beings can be the determinants of incidence and prevalence of the disease. The disease was considered inconsequential till recently, but it is emerging as an important public health problem during the last decade or so due to sudden upsurge in the number of reported cases and outbreaks. Since isolation rate of the microorganism from clinical specimens is low due to prior indiscriminate use of antibiotics, serological techniques... |
