Entwicklung einer Brutvogelgemeinschaft sechs Jahre nach Umstellung auf den Ökologischen Landbau in Norddeutschland Organic Eprints
Meinert, Roland; Rahmann, Gerold.

Wilbois, K.-P.; Spieß, H.; Vogt-Kaute, W.; Waldow, F.; Jahn, M.; Wächter, R.; Koch, E.; Müller, K.-J.; Leopold, J.; Reiners, E..

Bioactive forage and phytotherapy to cure and control endo-parasite diseases in sheep and goat farming systems – a review of current scientific knowledge Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Seip, Hannah.
Infestation with gastro-intestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants can cause severe economic losses and endanger animal welfare. The development of organic farming systems, the increased public awareness for drug residues in agricultural products and the development of resistant strains of parasites have enforced the search for sustainable alternatives. The aim of this review is to summarise the current scientific knowledge of alternative strategies to prevent and control endo-parasitic diseases in organic sheep and goat farming systems. The conducted literature evaluation has revealed the major potential to be within the field of bioactive forages, phytotherapy, homeopathy and copper-oxide wire particles. Alternative management pattern like...

Synthesis: prospects for organic agriculture in a global context Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Kristensen, Erik Steen.
As discussed by Knudsen et al. (Chapter 1) there is a rapid development in the global food chains towards increased trade and competition over long distances and very large corporate retail chains taking control over large parts of food trade. This global competition leads to a downward price pressure and demands for large volumes, standardisation, specialisation and high production efficiency and productivity for agricultural systems all over the world. This industrialisation of the agricultural sector leads to increased externalities in terms of emissions of nutrients and pesticides, loss of biodiversity and reduced animal welfare. Moreover, even though food production has increased significantly over the last decades and most countries engage in the...

Organic Farming in Europe – An Overview Organic Eprints
Willer, Helga.
Organic agriculture continues to develop dynamically in Europe. In most countries the organic area is on the increase and the market continues to grow. This positive development is also due to several policy support measures; such as funding under rural development programmes, legal protection, action plans as well as support for research and advice The organic sector, represented by the EU Group of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM EU Group), plays an important role in the development of organic food and farming in Europe.

Globalization and sustainable development: a political ecology strategy to realize ecological justice Organic Eprints
Byrne, John; Glover, Leigh; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
Organic agriculture is, like mainstream agriculture, faced with the challenges of globalization and sustainable development. Ecological justice, the fair distribution of livelihoods and environments, has emerged as a key concept in efforts, on the one hand, to resist negative consequences of globalization and ecological modernization and, on the other to propose new agenda and institutional arrangements. This chapter investigates the role that ecological justice as a political ecology strategy may have in addressing the present problems of organic agriculture in a global political economy. The investigation has two interacting elements, a theoretical analysis of the political, economic and ecological aspects of ecological justice and a discussion of how...

Evaluation of organic matter stability during the composting process of agroindustrial wastes. Organic Eprints
Tittarelli, Fabio; Trinchera, Alessandra; Intrigliolo, Francesco; Benedetti, Anna.
Composting of wastes from citrus industrial processing (pastazzo and sludge) was studied in order to evaluate the evolution of organic matter during the process and to individuate chemical and/or biochemical techniques able to set the stability of the final product. Composts from two open-air piles of different composition were sampled every month during the whole period of composting (5 months) and the organic matter of each sample was characterised by chemical and biochemical techniques. Humification rate (HR%) and humification index (HI) were determined. Extracted organic matter of six samples collected for each compost was investigated by isoelectric-focusing technique (IEF). The biochemical analysis was based on the study of C-mineralisation after the...

An Analysis of Organic Agriculture in Turkey: The Current Situation and Basic Constraints - The Updated and Revised Version Organic Eprints
Özbilge, Zeynep.
This article gives information about the current situation of Turkish organic agriculture, especially by comparing the official recognition for organic farming in the European Union with that of Turkey and summarizes the existing constraints. The analysis indicates that the further development of Turkish organic agriculture depends upon the development of the domestic organic market and Turkey has to fulfil a number of conditions to provide it. It is needed that the Turkish state both encourages organic production for the domestic market and supports organic agriculture by all means.

Fish production and fish welfare Organic Eprints
Stadtlander, Timo.
This paper is the extended version of an oral presentation at a two day meeting questioning the way ish is currently produced for human consumption including isheries and aquaculture and the way ish might be produced in the near future. his paper gives an overview of the current status of ish welfare and tries to answer the question whether or not ish can be produced in an animal friendly way. Still, it is only a brief overview of a very complex topic which has been discussed for over three decades and which will be even more discussed in the future. Whole books have failed to answer the question mentioned above. Due to the complexity of the topic there is not an easy answer: the answer depends on many manmade deinitions.

Vulnerability in Agriculture Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko.
The impact from climate change on agriculture is expected to be significant because of the vulnerability of agriculture to climate conditions in general. Precipitation, temperature, weather extremes and evaporation rates all impact production. Agriculture is important to the economy of Croatia due to its overall value and its impact on food security, vulnerable populations, and the employment it generates. In 2001, 92% of Croatia was classified as rural and 48% of the Croatian population lived in rural areas. Generally, rural households are more vulnerable due to poorer access to basic infrastructure and poorer housing conditions than households in urban areas. Existing climate variability already has a significant impact on agriculture. Extreme...

Vole trapping fences - a new approach to migration barriers Organic Eprints
Walther, Bernd; Fuelling, Olaf.
To control problematic vole species in organic orchards farmers can choose between different measures. Some methods like gassing, trapping and even the support of natural vole antagonists target to reduce vole population by killing individuals. Other methods like protective guards or migration barriers exclude voles from single trees or whole orchards. Recent combinations of the two approaches worked well but had some drawbacks in practice. Nevertheless, efficiency of migration barriers can be improved by attracted natural predators. Here we present first practical experiences and field observations of a vole-trapping-fence prototype. The new construction consists of prefabricated recyclable polypropylene pieces which are mounted to modules and assembled...

Body Condition Scoring bei Milchziegen Organic Eprints
Aschenbach, Franziska; Rahmann, Gerold.
