Report of the second horse mackerel otolith reading workshop OceanDocs
Age estimation of commercially exploited fish species in the Benguella region. Stocks of the two species of horse mackerel that occur in the Benguela region, namely Cape (Trachurus trachurus capensis) and Cunene horse mackerel (Trachurus trecae) are being exposed to increasing levels of commercial exploitation, highlighting the requirement for effective management measures to ensure their sustainable utilization. Such measures can only be implemented with confidence if they are based on reliable stock assessment procedures. Sizestructured stock assessment models have been found to be unsuitable for Southern African horse mackerel stocks, and the decision has recently been made to move to an age-structured VPA approach. A fundamental requirement for this...

Fatty composition of the developmental stage of some pond reared fresh water fishes in the oil palm belt of Nigeria. OceanDocs
Ayinla, O.A.; Idoniboye-Obu, T.I.E.; Omuaru, V.; Vehlow, U..
The fatty acid composition of the development stages (fingerling, juvenile and adult) of some pond raised fresh water fishes (Heterobranchus bidorsalis, ‘hybrid’ of H. bidorsalis and C. gariepinus, Chrysichtys nigrodigitatus, Heterotis niloticus and Oreochromis niloticus) were determined by gas liquid chromatography (GLC). Fatty acids abundant in the stages of these fishes are palm tic acid (C16:0), Oleic acid (C18:1) and Linolenic acid (C18:3w3) . Highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) such as C20:4w6, C20:2w3 and C22:4w6 acids were present in small quantity. The common features of freshwater fish is evidently displayed namely the enrichment in linolenic (18:2w6) and / or linolenic (18:3w3) fatty acids. However the presence of high proportions of...

Seychelles artisanal fisheries statistics for 1995 OceanDocs
Azemia, R.; Grandcourt, E..
(1). During 1995 an estimated total of 4313 tonnes of fish was landed on Mahe. Praslin and La Digue by 337 fishing boats 86,4% of which was landed on Mahe alone. The catch volume has decreased by 114 tonnes since 1994, and the number of boats operating has increased by 9 over the same period. (2). The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were, carangues {29.8%), job (13.3%), bourgeois (8.3%), maquereau doux (7.5%), cordonicr (6.8%) and capitaine (6.8%). (3). Peak landings occurred in March (546.6 MT) and the lowest catch occurred in January (216.4 MT). The average catch per month was 359.4 tonnes. (4). A marked seasonal variation in catches of demersal species was observed, with low catches being recorded during the...

Understanding Ocean Surges and Possible Signals over the Nigerian Coast: A Case Study of the Victoria Island Bar – Beach Lagos OceanDocs
Afiesimama, E.A.; Olaniyan, E..
Eighteen different occurrence of ocean surge events over the beach of the Victoria Island in Nigeria were recorded between 1990 to 2002 and each with its devastating consequences resulting from the massive flooding and erosion. Statistical analysis and parametric wind-wave model were used to investigate the ocean atmospheric interactions in terms of their characteristics, especially before during and after every surge event from 1990 to 2002. It revealed that all ocean surges apart from the surge of March 2002 were experienced in summer months of April to October, but more frequent in August. Coastal atmospheric pressure was generally transiently low and observed to coincide with high tides. However, pressure varies from one event to another, between 1008...

A preliminary assessment of coral bleaching in Mozambique OceanDocs
Schleyer, M.; Obura, D.; Motta, H.; Rodrigues, M.J..
The 1997-1998 El Niño southern oscillation caused elevated sea temperatures that resulted in global coral bleaching. Coral reefs constitute an important biological resource in terms of their complex biodiversity and are the basis for tropical fisheries and marine ecotourism. They represent one of Mozambique’s main coastal assets, and coastal communities and the growing tourism industry rely mainly on reef-based resources. Today, about 6.6 million people live within Mozambique’s 48 coastal administrative districts. This represents 42% of the current population (15.7 million), which is expected to grow at 3% p.a. (INE, 1998). In 1994, the population density in coastal districts was 28 persons/km2. In 1996, much higher densities were recorded in the coastal...

A review of potential economic mineral resources in offshore Nigeria OceanDocs
Ibe, A.C..
Previously published data and preliminary indications from research now in progress suggest the possible occurrence in offshore Nigeria of economically viable deposits of placer minerals (including heavy minerals), sand and gravel, phosphorite, glauconite, polymetalic manganese nodules etc. In addition, new stratigraphic evidence indicates the existence of potentially rich petroleum plays associated with a Tertiary canyon system in water depths beyond the limits of present exploitation. Based on the comparative geology of similar occurrences in better explored continental margins and ocean basins elsewhere, the possible origin, abundance and distribution of these resources are adduced. A brief assessment of the technology relevant to their discovery and...

(1). During 2003 a total of 3,852 Metric Tonnes (MT) of fish was landed on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue by 405 fishing boats. 80.5% of the total catch was landed on Mahe alone. The total artisanal catch decreased by 1063 (MT) compared to 2002, whilst the number of boats operating increased by 31 over the same period (excluding sport fishing vessels). (2). The most important species groups landed (greater than 5% of the total catch) were carangues (33.6%), job (15.8%), bourgeois (9.1%), cordonier (6.6%), capitaine (6.1%), becune (6.0%), and maquereau doux (5.4%). Compared to 2002, there were notable increases in the relative importance of cordonier and bourgeois to the overall catch. (3). Peak landings occurred in November (463.7 MT) and the lowest catch was...
