Distribution of aflatoxins in contaminated corn fractions segregated by size BJM
Piedade,Fabiana S.; Fonseca,Homero; Glória,Eduardo M.; Calori-Domingues,Antonia; Piedade,Sônia M.S.; Barbin,Décio.
The efficiency of segregation, by particle size, in reducing the aflatoxin content of corn lots under the Brazilian conditions was studied. The aflatoxin content, in the corn fractions obtained after sieving thirty contaminated samples, with approximately 3.0 kg each, was determined. The samples were passed through 4.5 mm round-hole sieves and the fractions with particles ³4.5 mm (fraction A) and <4.5 mm (fraction B) and then analyzed for aflatoxins by TLC. The results showed that the distribution of the aflatoxins among the fractions A and B varied from sample to sample. However, the fraction B presented higher content (6 to 1,422 µg/kg) of aflatoxins (P<5%), than samples of fraction A (4 to 389 µg/kg). In spite of that the segregation of this...

Sampling plan for the analysis of aflatoxin in peanuts and corn: an update BJM
Fonseca,Homero.
The aim of this paper was to update the sampling plan for analysis of mycotoxins in grains, formerly published by the author. The proposed alterations were based on the acquired experience on its application and on FAO recommendations. This update restricts the scope of the former plan and establishes a sampling plan for analysis of aflatoxin in peanuts and corn, by means of modified formulas, the minimum number of sacks or points (when in bulk) from which incremental samples should be drawn to make a bulk sample. Fractional exponents (square roots) of the formulas proportionally decrease the number of sacks/points to be sampled as the lot size increases. Operating Characteristic (OC) curves developed for in-shell and shelled peanuts and corn as well as...

Availability of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium from Poultry Litter and Conventional Fertilizers in a Volcanic Soil Cultivated with Silage Corn Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Hirzel,Juan; Walter,Ingrid.
Poultry litter (PL) is an organic matter source used as soil amendment. Besides its important nutrient content, it is a cheap alternative to conventional fertilizers in crop production. The efficient use of PL also helps reduce the environmental problems normally associated with its disposal near poultry production farms. This article reports the relative effects of PL and conventional fertilizers on the availability of soil N, P and K, dry matter (DM) production and total nutrient content in silage corn (Zea mays L.). The field experiment was carried out in a soil derived from volcanic ash (Tipic Melanoxerands) of Central South Chile. Corn was grown for three seasons (2002-2005) and PL and conventional fertilizers were applied in the first two years. The...

Granules morphology and rheological behavior of green banana (Musa cavendishii) and corn (Zea mays) starch gels Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Izidoro,Dayane Rosalyn; Demczuk Junior,Bogdan; Haminiuk,Charles Windson Isidoro; Sierakowski,Maria Rita; Freitas,Renato João Sossela de; Scheer,Agnes de Paula.
In this work, it was used starch obtained from green banana (Musa cavendishii) and commercial corn (Zea mays) starch in order to compare the granule morphology and the rheological behavior of these gel-starches. Images of starch granules morphology were obtained from scanning electron microscope (SEM). The banana starch granules presented an oval and ellipsoidal shape with irregular diameters. Neverthless, the granules of corn starch showed a poliedric shape, with different sizes. The rheological behavior of gel starch solutions showed a non-newtonian character with a pseudoplastic behavior. Herschel-Bulkley model gave a good description on the rheological behavior of the gel starch. Banana gel-starch solutions showed higher values of shear stress and...
