EFICIÊNCIA TÉCNICA EM PROPRIEDADES LEITEIRAS DA MICRORREGIÃO DE VIÇOSA-MG: UMA ANÁLISE NÃO-PARAMÉTRICA AgEcon
Santos, Jeronimo Alves dos; Vieira, Wilson da Cruz; Baptista, Antonio Jose Medina dos Santos.
The main objective of this paper was to evaluate the technical efficiency in 17 milk production farms in the region of Viçosa, state of Minas Gerais, during the period 1999-2002. These farms have received technical assistance from a program created by the Federal University of Viçosa and Nestlé. The technical efficiency was evaluated through the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique. The results obtained show that there are still a significant proportion of inefficient farms. It was also observed that the farms have become more homogeneous in their production characteristics which is probably due to the pattern of technical assistance adopted during the period analyzed.

The supermarket revolution and impacts on agricultural labor markets: Empirical evidence from Kenya AgEcon
Rao, Elizaphan J.O.; Qaim, Matin.
Many developing countries are currently experiencing a rapid expansion of supermarkets. New supermarket procurement systems could have important implications for farming and wider rural development. While previous studies have analyzed farm profit and income effects, possible employment effects have received much less attention. Building on data from a recent survey of vegetable farmers in Kenya, in this article a double-hurdle model of hired labor use is developed and estimated. Farmer participation in supermarket channels increases the likelihood of hiring labor by 13% and overall demand for hired labor by 38%. A gender disaggregation shows that positive employment effects are especially pronounced for female hired labor. Given that agricultural wage...

Technical efficiency of Organic Fertilizer in small farms of Nicaragua: 1998-2005 AgEcon
Zúniga-González, Carlos Alberto.
This article applies frontier production function analysis to small farms in Nicaragua during 1998-2005 (Battese and Coelli, 1988). The objective of this study is to estimate an average function that will provide a picture of the shape of the organic fertilizer technology of an average firm (in our case, agricultural production units). Furthermore I present a best-practice of organic fertilizer against which the efficiency of the firms within the primary sector can be measured (Coelli, T: 1995). The results show an average of technical efficiency acceptable which the makers of public policy in Nicaragua must considerer for the future. It is imperative if we consider an economy activity indexes that have increased during this period.
