Analyzing aquatic organisms present in fish stomachs is a good way to determine their availability in the environment. This paper aims to determine aquatic organism availability (especially benthos) for bentophagous fishes and to analyze spatial, temporal and ontogenetic changes in their diets. Samples were monthly taken from March 2000 to February 2001, through electrofishing, in two streams of the Iguaçu River. The stomachs were analyzed (329 units) and the results expressed through volumetric method. The diet was composed of benthic invertebrates, especially insects from several orders, being Ephemeroptera (3 families), diptera (11 families) and Trichoptera (9 families) the most consumed ones. Therefore, these groups... |

The southern State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) is the main rice producer in Brazil with a 60% participation of the national production and 86% participation of the region. Rice culture irrigation system is done by flooding, which leads to soil salinization, a major environmental constraint to production since it alters the plants’ metabolism exposed to this type of stress. The indica cultivar, widely used in RS, has a higher sensitivity to salinity when compared to that of the japonica cultivar in other physiological aspects. Current research analyzes enzymes expression involved in salt-subjected indica and japonica rice cultivars’ respiration. Oryza sativa L. spp. japonica S.Kato (BRS Bojuru, IAS 12-9 Formosa and Goyakuman) and Oryza sativa L. spp. indica... |

Successful disease treatment depends on molecular studies under indoor conditions with experimental infection protocols that facilitate understanding the disease and the drug`s efficacy. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was sequenced from three isolates, which were identified as Saprolegnia aenigmatica. Subsequently, healthy fish were immunosuppressed with dexamethasone (1.2 mg kg-1) and descaled to the skin using a sharp scalpel. These individuals were isolated in individual aquariums maintained at 22°C. Individuals in one group were subcutaneously inoculated with 9,000 zoospores (DDZ treatment), a second group was exposed to oomycetes in water with three colonized baits (DDB), a third group was maintained in water without zoospores (DD), and... |

This study aimed to describe the early development of Clarias gariepinus, a species that has been introduced into various watersheds worldwide, in order to help the identification of its eggs, larvae and juveniles in natural environments. The material used was obtained via induced spawning during 1999. After spawning, the periodicity of sampling varied according to ontogenic development. We analyzed 12 eggs, 146 larvae and 6 juveniles. Newly fertilized eggs are spherical, with a double membrane, the density of which varies. Initially the larvae have little pigmentation but this intensifies during development. They have four pairs of well-developed barbels, an elongated body, long dorsal and anal fins, no adipose fin and vesicles surrounding the finfold and... |

Functional foods have been highlighted by having, in addition to nutritional characteristics, the possibility of preventing risk and/or delaying the development of several non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In the last decade, many articles related to functional food have been published worldwide, and there is a need to understand how the theme is reflected in national journals. The present research aimed to collect information about publications covering the topic of functional foods in journals, synthesizing these data and interpreting them, evaluating the profile of the authors and a frequency of the articles involved with the subject by scientific journal and by State/region. Subsequently, they were evaluated as the most studied foods and as more used... |

It was conducted a research, in urban areas, on the nesting habits and reproductive period of Pachycondyla striata, a species of ant that stings painfully. The study was motivated by the frequent reports of accidents in the city of São Paulo. The reports are more common during the reproductive seasons of the species, when the winged females sting the population, since they enter the houses of the people attracted to light. Although anaphylaxis for P. striata has not been reported yet, other close species may cause anaphylaxis, which makes important to understand their biology in order to take management and control measures. Fourteen green areas in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, were monitored in the search for the species and their nests that were found... |

Senna comprises about 300 species with circuntropical distribution, widely represented in the Americas, also occurring in Africa, Australia, Asia and Oceania. The Brazil includes 80 species, of which 27 are endemic, 50 reported from Bahia and 22 recorded from the Caatinga. The floristic survey of Senna in the Ecological Station Raso da Catarina included analysis of specimens collected March 2010 to October 2011. The analyses were supplemented with dried collections from the following herbaria: ALCB, EAC, HRB, HUEFS and MBM. Seven taxa were recorded. The most representative taxa in the area were Senna rizzinii H.S.Irwin & Barneby and S. acuruensis (Benth.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby var. acuruensis. The genus can be found in a variety of environments... |
