Reproduction of a South American population of pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus) (Osteichthyes, Centrarchidae): a comparison with the European and North American populations Zoologia
Magalhães,André L. B. de; Ratton,Thiago F..
The reproductive biology of the introduced pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Custódio's Dam, rio Doce high basin, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil was studied from February/2001 to March/2002 and compared with introduced and native populations. Reproduction occurred almost along the entire period of study with a high frequency of fishes in the advanced ripening/mature and spawned/spent stages. The microscopic analyses indicated that the pumpkinseed sunfish presents multiple spawning. The egg diameter of the Brazilian population is similar to the Spanish, Greek and American ones. The standard length at maturity and the gonadosomatic index of the introduced populations are smaller when compared with native ones. The spawning season of...

Two piscivorous fishes, peacock bass (Cichla monoculus Spix & Agassiz, 1831) (Perciformes) and piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri Kner, 1860) (Characiformes), were introduced in some Rio Doce valley lakes (19º50'S, 42º40'W) for sport fisheries enhancement. As a consequence, small individuals and species were practically vanished in the host lakes. In this study, the effects of peacock bass and piranha introductions on the diet of a native piscivorous fish, the trahira - Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) are presented. Trahira's diet from three lakes were was compared with the stomach contentsdiet of trahira's living in another between three lakes with and three withoutstocked with the piscivorous species peacock bass and piranha. In the lakes with...

Microanatomia e histologia do sistema digestivo de Phyllocaulis soleiformis (Orbigny) (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Veronicellidae): V. Glândula digestiva Zoologia
Leal-Zanchet,Ana Maria; Thomé,José Willibaldo; Hauser,Josef.
The digestive gland of Phyllocaulis soleiformis is a compound tubular gland. The secretory tubules are made up of two main cell types: the digestive cells and calcic cells. The digestive cells are the most numerous, usually columnar, and exhibit three different functional stages: absorptive, secretory and excretory. These cells contain two cytoplasmic granules types and, in the excretory stage, most of the cell is occupied by a large vacuole. The calcic cells occursingly or frequently in groups of two or three, are triangular shaped and have distinct apical granules, and yet calcic histochemical detected granules. In addition, there is a third cell type, without characteristic cytoplasmic granules and which correspond to the undifferentiated cells. The...

Higher-level bee classifications (Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Apidae sensu lato) Zoologia
Melo,Gabriel A. R.; Gonçalves,Rodrigo B..
A higher-level classification of bees, in which the entire group is treated as a single family - the Apidae - is advocated here. A total of seven subfamilies, 51 tribes and 27 subtribes are recognized. These subfamilies correspond to the families adopted in the traditional classification. Although the proposed changes do not involve any major rearrangement, basically only changing the rank given to the main groups, the new system makes the classification of bees more consistent with that adopted for other major groups of aculeate Hymenoptera. It also departs from the 19th century practice, perpetuated in the traditional classification, of giving family-status to the main groups of bees. A correspondence table associating the taxon names used in the current...

Biologia reprodutiva da cobra-coral Erythrolamprus aesculapii Linnaeus (Colubridae), no Sudeste do Brasil Zoologia
Marques,Otávio A.V..
Dissection of 286 specimens of the "false" coral snake Erythrolamprus aesculapii Linnaeus, 1766, combined with data on captive individuais, provided information on the reproductive biology of this colubrid snake. Adult females (x snout-vent length = 74.5cm) attain larger body size than males (x SVL = 62.6). Clutch size ranged from one to eight eggs and was correlated with maternal body size. Neonates measured 20.2-22.5cm SVL and weighed 5.1-5.8g. Males attain sexual maturity earlier than females. Reproduction seems to be aseasonal, with vitellogenesis occurring throughout the year. Apparently the growth rate of folheies decreases in the dry season, possibly due to lower tempeiatures during this period. Multiple clutches were recorded in captive snakes....

Zoneamento do estado de Pernambuco para cultivo de camarões de água doce Zoologia
Coelho,Petrônio Alves; Torres,Maria Fernanda A..
Proper site selection is fundamental in the success of any aquiculture enterprise. To identify suitable areas for freshwater prawn culture in Pernambuco, factors like elevation, relief, soil and climate were considered, in accordance with the species biology and pond construction. According to the established criteria, suitable, unsuitable and unfavorable areas, with some restrictions, were recognized. Suitable areas for freshwater prawn culture in Pernambuco are about 835 km², representing 0.85% of the total area of the State.

Small orchid bees are not safe: parasitism of two species of Euglossa (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossina) by conopid flies (Diptera: Conopidae) Zoologia
Melo,Gabriel A. R.; Faria Jr,Luiz R. R.; Marchi,Paola; Carvalho,Claudio J. B. de.
Here we report for the first time data on parasitism of two species of Euglossa, E. intersecta Latreille, 1838 and E. anodorhynchi Nemésio, 2006, by conopid flies of the genus Physocephala Schiner, 1861. A parasitized adult male of E. intersecta was collected in Acre, northwestern Brazil, while parasitized adult females of E. anodorhynchi were obtained from trap-nests in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. For both host species, the parasite-host association was confirmed by rearing the flies from parasitized adult bees. E. anodorhynchi was attacked by Physocephala bipunctata (Macquart, 1843) and E. intersecta by an unidentified species of Physocephala Schiner, 1861. Although our current knowledge is still incipient, parasitism by conopid flies can be...

Composição de espécie de Arctiidae (Insecta, Lepidoptera) em áreas de Cerrado Zoologia
Ferro,Viviane G.; Diniz,Ivone R..
A análise multivariada...

A new species of Benthana (Crustacea: Isopoda: Philosciidae) from southern Brazil Zoologia
Sokolowicz,Carolina C.; Araujo,Paula B.; Boelter,Juliana F..
A new species of Benthana Budde-Lund, 1908 is described from southern Brazil. Benthana cairensis sp. nov. is distinguished from the other species in the genus by having 17 aesthetascs on the antennula and the elongated male pleopod 1 exopod with a lobe on the inner lateral margin and up to six setae on the outer lateral margin. The new species most resembles B. olfersii (Brandt, 1833), but may be distinguished by lacking the lobe with six setae on the internal margin of the proximal extremity of the merus of pereiopod 7. Furthermore, we include B. olfersii in the subgenus Benthanoscia based on the examined material as described herein.

Feeding overlap in two sympatric species of Rhinella (Anura: Bufonidae) of the Atlantic Rain Forest Zoologia
Sabagh,Leandro T.; Carvalho-e-Silva,Ana M. P. T..
A clear understanding of the relationships between overlapping, similarity, and competition is necessary to understand many of the questions about the structure and operation of a community. Rhinella icterica (Spix, 1824) and Rhinella crucifer (Wied Neuwied, 1821) are sympatric species of toads occurring in the National Park of Serra dos Órgãos in southeastern Brazil. The aim of the present study was to assess the dietary overlap of these two species. Ninety-four stomachs were analyzed, and 2245 prey items were found. Common prey were Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera larvae, Blattaria, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Opiliones, and Aranaea. Ants were the most important prey in both diets, followed by beetles and cockroaches. The niche breadth of R....

Dynamics of gonadal development of Aegla platensis Schmitt (Decapoda, Anomura, Aeglidae) Zoologia
Sokolowicz,Carolina C.; Bond-Buckup,Georgina; Buckup,Ludwig.
One way to estimate gonadal development through the reproductive cycle is to observe the growth of the gonads related to the organs used to store energy. The aim of this study was to follow the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indexes during annual cycle of Aegla platensis Schmitt, 1942. Adult animals were collected in Taquara, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (29°46'S, 50°53'W). Males and females were initially weighed and dissected and had their gonads and hepatopancreas (HP) removed and weighed in order to estimate the Gonadosomatic (GI) and hepatosomatic (HI) indexes. In females, the indexes were also compared to the degree of development of the ovaries. In males the GI showed a peak of gonadal development in the autumn (p < 0.05), just when the HI showed a...

Ultrastructure of ovarian follicular epithelium of the amazonian fish Pseudotylosurus microps (Gunther) (Teleostei, Belonidae): I. the follicular cells cycle of development Zoologia
Cruz-Landim,Carminda da; Cruz-Hofling,Maria Alice da.
The present paper deals with the changes on ultrastructural features of the follicular cells along the growth of the oocyte of Pseudotylosurus microps (Gunther, 1868). The epithelium pass from single squamous to pseudostratified and finally cylindric. Remarkable are the changes in the nuclear shapes, the increasing amount of rough endoplasmic reticulum and the formation of large lipid deposits in the follicular cells by the end of vitellogenic phase. Very peculiar intercellular deposits forms between the perinucleolar and vitellogenic phase of oocyte maturation. Although largely referred to in the specialized literature, our attempts to correlate the follicular cells changes with the formation of the oocyte envelopes or even with an endocrine function are...
