With the intensification of aquaculture production systems, mass mortality of fish and shellfish caused by bacterial infections is not unusual. Chemotherapy (treatment of infection with antimicrobial compounds) and immunoprophylaxis (vaccination and immunostimulation), are the common methods applied to treat bacterial infections. In search of an efficient and cost-effective delivery route for antimicrobial agents and/or immuno-prophylactics to treat fish and shrimp larvae, the use of live prey organisms bioencapsulated with drugs has been explored. This article provides an update on the use of the bioencapsulation technique in aquaculture. |

Belgium became officialy a federal state in 1993. The federal competence was reshuffeled and parts of it attributed to the Communities and Regions. Since the latter became competent in economic matters, it is mostly the redistribution of powers between the federal and regional level which is at order in this study. At first sight, a rather simple rule of thumb can be applied. All waters located on the land-side of the baseline, i.e. the low-water line in Belgium, belong to the competence of the Regions. All waters on the seaside of the baseline, on the other hand, remain a federal competence. This is the result of a basic interpretation given by the Conseil d’Etat in 1976. This body reached the conclusion that the territorial sea did not form part of the... |

The distribution of heavy minerals in Middle to Upper Eocene deposits of western Belgium is discussed with reference to ternary diagrams based on density (<3.4; 3.4-4.2; >4.2) and mineralogical composition (ubiquist, parametamorphic and garnet-epidote-amphibole-pyroxene groups). A corresponding diamond diagram is used to interpret the transport mode and the energy of the sedimentary environment. The Aalter Formation (middle Eocene), which was deposited in a quiet to turbulent setting, contains high amounts of ubiquists, parametamorphic minerals and garnets, with a minor epidote and amphibole content. The Maldegem Formation (middle to late Eocene) of deltaic origin, is characterized by the dominance of ubiquists, particularly in the sands and silts.... |

New features have been added and several necessary changes have been made to the standard WAM-cycle4 (WAMC4) model code for it to run efficiently when applied to shallow water regions. The restriction of having a source term integration time step smaller than or equal to the propagation time step was relaxed, considerably reducing the computational time needed. An additional reduction in computing time and an increase in accuracy were obtained by introducing a split-frequency time step. There is now a choice of using the octant or quadrant coordinate system for the propagation of the wave energy. The source term integration and, more particularly, the use of a limiter on the energy growth, were studied. For the evaluation of the energy decay in shallow... |

The tantulus larva ofMicrodajus langi is redescribed using Scanning Electron Microscopy. Thoracopods 2–5 have poorly developed but fully armed endites. Thoracopods 1–5 are biramous, with each ramus represented by a minute segment. A new species,M. pectinatus, is described from a tanaid host collected in the Rockall Trough, off the west coast of Scotland. A system of homologies for the portopodal segments of the thoracopods of the tantulus larva is proposed. Some aspects of the musculature of the adult male are described for the first time. |

Asterocheres reginae n. sp., of the family Asterocheridae, is described from the spongeAgelas clathrodes (Schmidt) collected at Carrie Bow Cay, Belize. It inhabits the internal canal system of its sponge host. A detailed description of both sexes is presented, and emphasis has been placed on the recognition of homologies between the limb segments and armature elements in accordance with the new evolutionary scheme established by Huys & Boxshall (1991). |

Three separate enrichment trials compared the <i>n</i>-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) levels in <i>Artemia franciscana</i> nauplii (Great Salt Lake, USA) as a function of the <i>n</i>-3 HUFA level in the emulsion (30% and 50%), the enrichment dose (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 g1-1) and the degree of dilution of a high HUFA emulsion with an <i>n</i> -3 HUFA-free emulsion (100/0, 50/50, 25/75, 12.5/87.5 and 0/100, HUFA-rich/HUFA-free, w/w). The standard emulsions were distributed by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, Working Group on the Mass Rearing of Juvenile Fish (ICES). After the 48-h enrichment, the content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid EPA) and total... |
