Development of a lipid-enrichment technique for Artemia juveniles produced in an intensive system for use in marine larviculture OMA
Dhont, J.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although there exists an obvious inclination to replace live larval food by formulated feeds, Artemia nauplii are still essential in the larviculture of marine fish species. So far, on-grown Artemia are rarely used in larviculture although they offer several advantages over Artemia nauplii: e.g. they contain a higher individual protein and energy content thus improving the fish larvae's energy budget; an equal amount of live food is reached with far less individuals thus a considerable saving of Artemia cysts; their composition of (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) may easily be improved by applying enrichment techniques. This study deals with the development of...

Progress in biomedication using live foods OMA
Robles, R.; Sorgeloos, P.; Van Duffel, H.; Nelis, H.J..
With the intensification of aquaculture production systems, mass mortality of fish and shellfish caused by bacterial infections is not unusual. Chemotherapy (treatment of infection with antimicrobial compounds) and immunoprophylaxis (vaccination and immunostimulation), are the common methods applied to treat bacterial infections. In search of an efficient and cost-effective delivery route for antimicrobial agents and/or immuno-prophylactics to treat fish and shrimp larvae, the use of live prey organisms bioencapsulated with drugs has been explored. This article provides an update on the use of the bioencapsulation technique in aquaculture.

Marine green algae (Chlorophyta) from the north coast of Papua New Guinea OMA
Coppejans, E.; Leliaert, F.; Dargent, O.; De Clerck, O..
The marine benthic green algae of the north coast of Papua New Guinea (mainly from Madang province) are documented, based on collections made by the first author between 1980 and 1990. All records (118 taxa) are listed with bibliographic, taxonomic, nomenclatural and biogeographical notes. Identification keys are added for genera represented by at least two species. Representatives of the Pseudocodiaceae and some Udoteaceae are illustrated. The green algal flora of the north coast appears to be much richer than that of the south coast where 72 taxa, including 19 unchecked records from literature, are recorded from the Port Moresby area.

De Belgische staatshervorming en het Zeerecht OMA
Franckx, E..
Belgium became officialy a federal state in 1993. The federal competence was reshuffeled and parts of it attributed to the Communities and Regions. Since the latter became competent in economic matters, it is mostly the redistribution of powers between the federal and regional level which is at order in this study. At first sight, a rather simple rule of thumb can be applied. All waters located on the land-side of the baseline, i.e. the low-water line in Belgium, belong to the competence of the Regions. All waters on the seaside of the baseline, on the other hand, remain a federal competence. This is the result of a basic interpretation given by the Conseil d’Etat in 1976. This body reached the conclusion that the territorial sea did not form part of the...

Eocene sediment supply in western Belgium as determined through heavy mineral distribution OMA
Jacobs, P..
The distribution of heavy minerals in Middle to Upper Eocene deposits of western Belgium is discussed with reference to ternary diagrams based on density (<3.4; 3.4-4.2; >4.2) and mineralogical composition (ubiquist, parametamorphic and garnet-epidote-amphibole-pyroxene groups). A corresponding diamond diagram is used to interpret the transport mode and the energy of the sedimentary environment. The Aalter Formation (middle Eocene), which was deposited in a quiet to turbulent setting, contains high amounts of ubiquists, parametamorphic minerals and garnets, with a minor epidote and amphibole content. The Maldegem Formation (middle to late Eocene) of deltaic origin, is characterized by the dominance of ubiquists, particularly in the sands and silts....

The spectral wave model, WAM, adapted for applications with high spatial resolution OMA
Monbaliu, J.; Padilla-Hernandez, R.; Hargreaves, J.C.; Carretero Albiach, J.C.; Luo, W.; Sclavo, M.; Günther, H..
New features have been added and several necessary changes have been made to the standard WAM-cycle4 (WAMC4) model code for it to run efficiently when applied to shallow water regions. The restriction of having a source term integration time step smaller than or equal to the propagation time step was relaxed, considerably reducing the computational time needed. An additional reduction in computing time and an increase in accuracy were obtained by introducing a split-frequency time step. There is now a choice of using the octant or quadrant coordinate system for the propagation of the wave energy. The source term integration and, more particularly, the use of a limiter on the energy growth, were studied. For the evaluation of the energy decay in shallow...

A new species of Microdajus (Crustacea: Tantulocarida) parasitic on a tanaid in the north-eastern Atlantic, with observations on M. langi Greve OMA
Boxshall, G.; Huys, R.; Lincoln, R..
The tantulus larva ofMicrodajus langi is redescribed using Scanning Electron Microscopy. Thoracopods 2–5 have poorly developed but fully armed endites. Thoracopods 1–5 are biramous, with each ramus represented by a minute segment. A new species,M. pectinatus, is described from a tanaid host collected in the Rockall Trough, off the west coast of Scotland. A system of homologies for the portopodal segments of the thoracopods of the tantulus larva is proposed. Some aspects of the musculature of the adult male are described for the first time.

The influence of the formulation of the herbicide paraquat on its toxicity for aquatic organisms OMA
Benijts-Claus, C.; Persoone, G..
Short term bio-assays have been carried out on representatives of different trophic levels of the aquatic food chain. The two wetters, which are included in the commercial formulation "Gramoxone" are very harmful for fish and their combination to paraquat increases the toxicity of the herbicide. Algae and crustaceans on the contrary, are more affected by the herbicide than by the wetters, the toxicity to the latter two groups being much higher than to fish.

Larval development of the land crab Gecarcinus lateralis lateralis (Fréminville,1835) (Brachyura Gecarcinidae) reared in the laboratory OMA
Willems, K.A..
The complete larval development of Gecarcinus lateralis lateralis (Fréminville, 1835), a gecarcinid land crab from Bermuda, is described and illustrated based on larvae reared in the laboratory. The species passes through six (possibly five) zoeal stages and one megalopal stage. The development through six zoeal stages to the young crab stage takes at least 29 days. Morphological characters of G. l. lateralis larvae are compared with gecarcinid species of which the complete larval development is known, i.e., Cardisoma guanhumi and C. carnifex.

Manipulated yeast diets as a partial algal substitute for the nursery culture of the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria OMA
Coutteau, P.; Hadley, N.H.; Manzi, J.; Sorgeloos, P..
Rearing bivalve molluscs in commercial hatchery and nursery systems has so far relied on the production of live algae, which is costly and often unpredictable. Therefore the development of satisfactory artificial diet would greatly reduce the operating costs of bivalve operations. The development of techniques to improve the nutritional composition and digestibility of yeasts resulted in a product with great potential as a substitute for unicellular algae. Previous work on the Manila clam Tapes semidecussata showed that replacing 80% of the algae by these manipulated yeasts resulted in growth rates of 64 to 93% in comparison with the growth rate obtained for the algal control. In the present study a standard culture test for evaluating...
