| Using the 16 day MODIS (aboard the EOS Terra satellite) 250m NDVI and ground biophysical and spectral measurements we established simple relationships between these parameters and the canopy cover. The canopy cover is used in water erosion models to estimate the amount of soil loss under precipitation events and specific geographic conditions. Two transects, in the grassland part of the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) located near the town of Tombstone in Arizona, were established for ground data collection. | An intermediate ocean-atmosphere coupled model of the tropical Pacific is used to investigate the sensitivity of the seasonal forecasts to the configuration of the oceanic vertical structure. The models consist in a three baroclinic mode tropical Pacific Ocean model and a Gill (1980)'s tropical atmosphere. The predictive skill of the model using a simple nudging method for the initialization is first presented from 1970 and compared to the results of other prediction system of similar complexity, which emphasizes the modulation of the skill on decadal timescales. It is then demonstrated that the skill is critically dependant on the energy distribution on the baroclinic mode, higher-order mode contributions being favored at some period and not at others.... |

| Species of shrimps are revised based on bibliographic information and on specimens collected with an Agassiz trawl (AGT) during the PUCK-156 Expedition (2001) onboard R/V Sonne in three areas along Chilean coast; off Antofagasta (22° lat. S), off Concepción (36°lat. S) and off Chiloé (42° lat. S). 111 specimens belonging to 12 species were collected, including three new records for the Chilean fauna; Metacrangon procax, Nematocarcinus productus, and Merhyppolite sp. aff. M. americana. Presence of Nematocarcinus lanceopes, Lebbeus antarcticus, Pandalopsis ampla and Sclerocrangon atrox in the collected material allows extension of their distributional ranges from sub-Antarctic to temperate areas |

| En un sistema léntico los cambios en los niveles de trofía normalmente están acompañados de cambios estructurales en la biota. Una de las formas de establecer estos cambios estructurales en forma simple es a través de una evaluación rápida de la biodiversidad, realizada basándose en la discriminación de morfoespecies, sin tener que profundizar las identificaciones taxonómicas a niveles de género y especie. | Shipping activities in the Baltic Sea, including oil transport and oil handled in harbors, have a number of negative impacts on the marine environment and coastal zone. Oil discharges from ships represent a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Oil spills cause the contamination of seawater, shores, and beaches, which may persist for several months and represent a threat to marine resources. | Hasta 1917 la información existente sobre la flora diatomológica de aguas continentales de Chile provino de las publicaciones de investigadores extranjeros. A partir de 1967 las investigaciones se concentran en tres áreas de Chile: la zona central, el área de Concepción y la Región de Los Lagos. El conocimiento actual sobre esta flora es escaso y poco exacto, pues muchos de los taxa señalados han sido erróneamente determinados. | The seasonal formation of a bottom-water layer severely depleted in dissolved oxygen has become a perennial occurrence on the Louisiana continental shelf adjacent to the Mississippi River system. Dramatic changes have occurred in this coastal ecosystem in the last half of the 20th century as the loads of dissolved inorganic nitrogen tripled. There are increases in primary production, shifts in phytoplankton community composition, changes in trophic interactions, and worsening severity of hypoxia. | Los moluscos lamelibranquios han sido señalados como hospedadores intermediarios de los parásitos cestodos del orden Tetraphyllidea. Estos platelmintos culminan sus ciclos de vida en los elasmobranquios. En diversas partes del mundo se ha descrito una infinidad de larvas de cestodos del tipo Scolex pleuronectis parasitando molúscos bivalvos. | Las tecamebas son protozoos que habitan una amplia variedad de ambientes terrestres y de aguas dulces, incluyendo suelos húmedos, lagos, marismas, turberas, etc. Sus tecas o conchillas fósiles pueden ser recuperadas de los sedimentos en cantidades suficientes como para permitir la estimación de su abundancia relativa. El objetivo de este estudio fue entregar el primer antecedente descriptivo de la distribución de la tecamebofauna en la turbera localizada en el Parque Nacional Puyehue, Chile. | Las especies del género Emerita son decápodos anomuros pertenecientes a la clase Crustacea, muy comunes en las playas de arena. Emerita analoga (Stimpson 1857) extiende su distribución desde Alaska hasta Argentina, faltando sólo en la zona tropical con temperaturas superiores a 20°C y vive en los niveles medio e inferior del intermareal, especialmente en playas expuestas. | En base a revisión bibliográfica, se realizó una sinopsis del estado del arte de las macrófitas vasculares de ecosistemas acuáticos continentales de Chile. Se registró un total de 455 especies de macrófitas acuáticas, de las cuales 3 corresponden a gimnospermas, 15 a pteridófitos, 184 a monocotiledóneas y 253 a dicotiledóneas. De éstas, sólo 62 son hidrófitas típicas. El total de estas macrófitas representa el 8,7% de la flora de Chile continental, y las hidrófitas sólo el 1,2%. Respecto de su origen fitogeográfico, destaca el alto porcentaje de especies nativas (79,3%) sobre las introducidas (20,7%). | The European satellite sensor MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) can be used to detect a peak in the optical spectrum of water-leaving radiance at about 705 nm which provides a signature of intense plankton blooms. We present examples of this signature in images and spectra derived from MERIS data, and demonstrate how this signature arises using model results. The MERIS band at 709 nm, which is an essential part of the detection scheme, is not present in either Seawifs or MODIS.
