The present paper deals with two parasites of the crab Pugettia brevirostris, the one representing the new species Sacculina reinhardi, the other identified with Sacculina muricata. The excrescences of the external cuticle of Sacculina reinhardi are similar to those of Sacculina gracilis. For a comparison of S. gracilis with S. reinhardi some additional data of previously described specimens of S. gracilis are here noted and figured, to show that certain characters of this species are constantly different from the corresponding peculiarities in the only available specimen of S. reinhardi. Sacculina reinhardi nov. spec. 1) U. S. Bureau of Fisheries, Northwestern Pacific Cruise, 1906, in entrance of Uraga Strait, Gulf of Tokyo, Japan, 70 fms., October 26,... |

Boschma, H.. |
In a previous paper (Boschma, 1933 b) descriptions were given of 22 species of Rhizocephala in the collection of the United States National Museum. In the cited paper especially attention was given to the details of the external and the internal cuticle, the data concerning the structure of the male organs and the colleteric glands were briefly described but not figured. The measurements of the type specimens were noted but no description was given of the shape of the animals. In a later paper (Boschma, 1937) some more details were described of the male organs and the colleteric glands of the specimens belonging to the genus Sacculina, but these structures up till now remain imperfectly known in the specimens belonging to other genera of the group. To... |

Between August 18 and September 5, 1950, Dr. C. Beets, geologist Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company, explored the aquatic fauna and flora of the Great Bitter Lake. In the course of this exploration dredge hauls were made at 47 stations, distributed all over the lake. An account of this work and a description of the stations were given by Dr. Beets in a previous volume of the present journal (1953). The Decapod Crustacea collected by Dr. Beets belong to twelve species, three of which have not been reported from the Suez Canal before. Apart from these additions to our knowledge of the fauna of the Suez Canal, the present collection is of great interest because of the extensive data provided by Dr. Beets on the ecology of the localities from which the material... |

On several occasions the Hydrachnellae of the Oudemans Collection have been the subject of a publication. In 1898 Oudemans himself published a "List of Dutch Acari, 6th part, Hydrachnellae Latr., 1802" in which nineteen indigenous species were enumerated. Afterwards Romijn (1916) dealt with 'Oudemans' Hydracarina", thereby increasing the number of Dutch species to 26, although he paid attention to the adult mites only. Finally there appeared a catalogue of the Oudemans Collection, prepared by Buitendijk (1945), in which the Hydrachnellae are listed on pp. 343-347. Because Buitendijk (1945) considered her catalogue a preliminary one, it is evident that reliable conclusions on the material were still to be awaited. This justifies the appearance of the... |

Key to the Dutch centipedes (Myriapoda: Chilopoda) With this key it is possible to identify the Dutch species of centipedes. In the introductory paragraphs the terminology of the body is explained. Subsequently, the body segments with pore fields and carpophage structure, the head with ocelli and coxosternum with prosternal teeth, the legs with setae code, and male and female gonopods are described. The key is based on the work of Brölemann (1930), Eason (1964, 1966, 1980, 1982), Keay (1995), and Koren (1986, 1992). All discriminating characters are checked with Dutch specimens and adapted to the Dutch situation, if necessary. The drawings are based on Dutch material. Additional to the key, a table with setae location on leg 14 and 15 of... |

INTRODUCTION After the manuscript of my paper on Problemacaris (Gordon, 1960), had gone to press, Dr. R. B. Pike sent me notes and drawings of a larva that had been obtained by the "Sarsia" on 14 November 1957 and which he and Dr. D. I. Williamson had examined. When I told these two zoologists that this larva was apparently an older stage of one that I had just described, they decided not to proceed any further with their joint paper, and sent the larva for inclusion in the British Museum Collection. However, Dr. Williamson and I did have some correspondence relating to the possible identity of the larva and we thought we had got a clue to the real adult. But it was hoped that an older larva might be found which could be quite conclusive, and I only added... |

A worldwide systematic review of the genus Anapagurus is presented. In addition to the rediagnoses of the genus and all known species, five new species, A. alboranensis, A. adriaticus, A. vossi, A. atlantidii, and A. congolensis, are described. All 18 species are illustrated and a key to the species is given. Several new diagnostic characters found in the right chelipeds (1- the shape and relative size of the mesial and lateral lobes that flank the dorsoproximal margin of the palm; 2- the shape and relative size of the median sinus of the ventroproximal palmar margin; 3- the shape, armature and relative size of the dorsomesial distal carpal angle; and 4- the shape and extension of both ventrodistal and ventroproximal carpal margins, which determine the... |

Catalogue of the Dutch spiders (Araneae) This new catalogue is a revised edition of the catalogue of the spiders of the Netherlands of 1980. Newly published faunistic records have been added. A total of 640 species names pass in review, 20 of which (in brackets) concern former records now removed, while 10 are questionable but unverifiable (indicated with ?). Twelve species clearly introduced and not represented by viable populations outside the special anthropogenic environments, such as greenhouses, are included in the catalogue [in square brackets]. Since 1980, 77 species have been added to the Dutch faunal spider checklist. The Netherlands house the type-localities of six nominal species, now representing three recognized species (Liocranum rutilans... |

We have examined the caudal regions of diverse peracarid and pancarid malacostracans using light and scanning electronic microscopy. The traditional view of malacostracan posterior anatomy is not sustainable, viz., that the free telson, when present, bears the anus near the base. The anus either can occupy a terminal, sub-terminal, or mid-ventral position on the telson; or can be located on the sixth pleomere – even when a free telson is present. Furthermore, there is information that might be interpreted to suggest that in some cases a telson can be absent. Embryologic data indicates that the condition of the body terminus in amphipods cannot be easily characterized, though there does appear to be at least a transient seventh segment that seems to fuse... |
