A Study on the Variations of Size, Shape and External Features of the Spleen in South Indian Population 77
Nayak B,Satheesha; Somayaji,S. N; Soumya,K. V.
The spleen is the largest lymphoid organ. It is wedge shaped and measures about 1 inch thick, 3 inches broad and 5 inches long. It presents characteristic notches on its superior margin and has a hilum on the visceral surface. The aim was to study the anomalies related to size, shape and external features of the spleen and discuss their clinical importance. As there are not many reports on variations in size shape and features of spleen in the South Indian population, we decided to do this study on cadaveric specimens. We observed 50 spleens fixed with 10% formalin. Among the 50 spleens observed, 25 spleens (50%) were normal and had all the features explained in the textbooks. 25 spleens (50%) did not have any notches on the superior margin, 2 spleens (4%)...

Origin of the Tendon of the Long Head of the Biceps Brachii Muscle and its Relationship with Glenoid Labrum in Human Foetuses 77
Reis,Francisco Prado; Aragão,José Aderval; Moura,Gustavo Souza; de Santana,Iúri Amorim; Carvalho,Eric Allan Nunes; Feitosa,Vera Lúcia Corrêa; Nunes,Marco Antonio Prado.
We dissected the shoulders of 20 human foetuses to anatomical study. The purpose of this study was to characterize the anatomical origin of the long head tendon of the muscle biceps brachii (LHBBT) in human foetuses and its relationships with the glenoid labrum of the scapula. The results had shown that in approximately 95% of the cases the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii inserts in the region of the glenoid labrum. This origin seems to form, together with the glenoid labrum, an anatomical complex. We conclude that the almost totality of the LHBBT was originated in the glenoidal labrum. For us, this furthermore reinforce the importance and necessity of better clarifying the anatomical and clinical implications of the biceps/labrum complex.

Morphologic Aspects of Abductor digiti minimi Muscle in the Hand 77
Buarque de Gusmão,Luiz Carlos; Frassy Feijó,Mario Jorge; Sousa-Rodrigues,Célio Fernando de.
The Abductor digiti minimi muscle, and the other hypotenar muscles, frequently presents anatomical variations. According to literature, this muscle can be composed by one, two or three muscular beams, as well as it can present accessory muscular beams. In dissecations of 40 formolized hands, we objectified to study the morphology and variations of the Abductor digiti minimi muscle. The muscle presented two muscular beams in 82,5 %, three beams in 15% and only 1 beam in 2,5 % of the cases. In none of cases accessory muscular beams were observed. When compared with literature, are observed statistics difference in some studied aspects. The results found in the research allow to affirm that the Abductor digiti minimi muscle is formed by two muscular beams in...

Morphological Analyisis of the Fabella in Brazilians 77
Silva,Julio Guilherme; Araújo Chagas,Carlos Alberto; Torres,Diego Faria Magalhães; Servidio,Lucia; Vilela,Ari Cantuária; Chagas,Walker André.
Among the present`s sesamoids in the human body, the fabella can be found in the posterior part of the knee in low incidence. This report is quite controverted in the classic anatomical literature as well as its constitution. Its fixation is on the tendon of the gastrocnemius lateralis, close to its origin, in the posterior part of condilus femuralis lateralis. However, when its occurs, generally induces in the knee the absence of arcuate ligament with the presence of fabellofibular ligament. The prevalence is larger in male individuals. Few studies discuss the histology of the fabella. Some authors suggest that the fabella basically formed by bone tissue and others describe it as a fibrocartilaginous. The aim of this study is to analyze the incidence of...

Anatomy of Posterior Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve Related to the Lateral Epicondyle and Interepicondylar Line 77
Chodewaratham,Pathidta; Chentanez,Vilai; Agthong,Sithiporn; Huanmanop,Thanasil.
Posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve (PACN) is a branch of radial nerve supplying the skin of posterior forearm. Data regarding its anatomy remain insufficient especially the origin and number of branches. We dissected 101 upper extremities from 32 male and 20 female cadavers to expose the PACN. In all specimens, the nerve emerged from the deep fascia at the hiatus proximal to the interepicondylar line (IEL) with mean distances of 7.24 and 7.44 cm in males and females, respectively. Percentage of this distance to the arm length was 23.2 % and 26.1 % in males and females, respectively. After penetrating the deep fascia, the PACN coursed in the subcutaneous layer and crossed the IEL anterior to the lateral epicondyle (LE) in all cases. The mean distances...

Clinical practice in our country showed a lack of suitable implants that perfectly match the anthropometry of the local population. However, there have been no reports or comprehensive studies conducted to substantiate this argument. We therefore prospectively studied 120 hips from sixty subjects with an average age of 25±5.18 years old. The average weight and height were 61.48±13.84 kg and 1.65±9.63 m respectively. The exclusion criteria were pregnant woman, those who had injury to the hip joint, and those with implant or prosthesis. Four parameters were measured the femoral head diameter (FHD), femoral neck length (FNL), femoral neck width (FNW) and collo-diaphyseal angle (CDA). Statistical analysis showed no significant differences between left and...

Morphometric Study on the Tibial Collateral Ligament 77
Ranade,Anu Vinod; Rai,Rajalakshmi; Prabhu,Latha Venkatraya; Kumaran,Mangala; Kumar,Arunachalam.
Tibial collateral ligament by virtue of its length, composite attachments, and biomechanical exertions is more prone to lesions. A systematic analysis of the dimensions and variations of this ligament has been presented in this article. With the decrease emphasis on anatomy as a preclinical subject and recent successful moves to curtail total teaching hours for dissection, coupled with the increasing shortage of cadavers, data of this nature will in our opinion becomes scarce progressively. With these factors in context, and attempt is made to record the gross morphological features of the ligament from a series of dissections

Anatomy of the Sural Nerve Related to Calcaneal Tendon, Intermalleolar Line and Small Saphenous Vein 77
Dangintawat,Pimpimol; Huanmanop,Thanasil; Agthong,Sithiporn; Chentanez,Vilai.
Sural nerve (SN) courses from the posterior aspect of leg to the lateral side of ankle and foot. Anatomy of the SN is of clinical importance due to its involvement in nerve biopsy, nerve graft harvesting including injuries during calcaneal tendon repair. Despite substantial knowledge in the literature, more easily located landmarks and data regarding the symmetry are still needed. Ninety-eight lower extremities from 31 males and 18 females were dissected in this study. The SN originated from the union between the medial and lateral sural cutaneous nerves in 52.0 % of the legs. The distance from the union point to the intermalleolar line (IML) was 16.3±8.4 (SD) cm. The ratio of this distance to the fibular length (apex of head to lateral malleolus or LM)...

Morphology and Dissection Technique of the Kidney of the Grey Snapper Lutjanus griseus (Teleostei: Lutjanidae) 77
Kobelkowsky,Abraham.
In order to describe the morphology of the kidney and implement its dissection technique, specimens of the grey snapper Lutjanus griseus were analyzed. The morphology of the kidney fits with the structural pattern of the higher teleosts, consisting of a large fusion of the right kidney with the left, with the exception of the anterior renal lobes. Both anterior renal lobes are separated by the retractores dorsales muscles and by the anchorage of the gas bladder to the vertebrae. Some cranial and spinal nerves, as well as ribs, blood vessels, the Baudelot's ligament, the sinus venosus of the heart, the precaudal vertebrae, and the gas bladder mark the surface of the kidney. The archinephric ducts are connected with the urinary bladder, from which the common...

Pettian,Mariane; Iatecola,Amilton; Vecina,Cesar Adriano Dias; Viotto,Maria José Salete; Isayama,Ricardo Noboro; Palomari,Evanisi Teresa; da Cunha,Marcelo Rodrigues.
The neural compression syndromes peripheral upper limb are common in clinical medicine and the causes range from trauma and occupational factors. Technical evaluation manuals as neural tension at different positions of the upper limb as well as knowledge of the topography of the affected nerve are essential for accurate diagnosis. The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of the median nerve in different positions of the upper limb. Fifteen formalin-fixed cadavers were used for morphometric and topographic evaluation of the median nerve in different positions of the right upper limb. In all cases analyzed, the median nerve originated from the lateral and medial fascicles of the brachial plexus and attended by the arm and forearm in accordance...

Extensor indicis brevis Muscle: an Unusual Muscular Variant 77
Garbelotti Junior,S; Yukio Fukuda,T; Rodrigues Pereira,V; Garcia Lucareli,P; Olave,E.
Knowledge of anatomical variations of the musculoskeletal system is important for interpreting unusual clinical presentations. We observed the presence of an abnormal extensor indicis muscle in the left hand of an adult male cadaver. In this case, the muscle comes from the ligament and over the scaphoideum and trapezoideum bones and continues after the short muscle belly; it is attached to the dorsal aponeurosis of the indicis. This muscular disposition was described in other studies which demonstrated approximately 1.0% of incidence. Clinically, this anatomical variation may be associated with pain and swelling at the back of the hand. In these cases symptoms tend to increase due to mechanical stress and can be confused with the presence of a dorsal...

Sartorial Branch of Saphenous Nerve: Anatomical Relationship with Bony Landmarks and Great Saphenous Vein 77
Tothonglor,Amornrat; Agthong,Sithiporn; Huanmanop,Thanasil; Chentanez,Vilai.
Sartorial branch of saphenous nerve (medial crural cutaneous nerve) originates at the medial side of the knee and descends along the great saphenous vein (GSV) to innervate the medial aspect of the leg. Its anatomy is of concern in surgical procedures and anesthetic block. However, the measurement data related to palpable bony landmarks with comparison between sexes and sides are lacking. Dissection was done in 95 lower limbs from both sexes. We found that the nerve pierced the deep fascia alone in most cases (92.6%). This piercing point was always distal to the adductor tubercle with the distance of 5-6 cm which was 15% of the leg length (the distance between the adductor tubercle and medial malleolus). The nerve was 7 cm medial to the tibial tuberosity....
