The present study was performed to evaluate the concentrations of phytochemicals (carotenoids and phenolic acids) in wheat varieties grown under comparable organic and conventional conditions over three years as part of a long-term field trial. Phenolic acids of the hydroxybenzoic acid and hydroxycinnamic acid group were quantified by HPLC-DAD after extraction as free, soluble conjugated, and bound forms. Furthermore, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin were determined by HPLC-DAD. There were no statistically significant differences between the two farming systems (sum of carotenoids (microg/g) for 2003, 0.91 +/- 0.55 organic vs 0.96 +/- 0.34 conventional; for 2005, 1.61 +/- 0.22 organic vs 1.33 +/- 0.19 conventional; for 2006, 0.87 +/- 0.33 organic vs... |

Blue lupins have become more important in animal feeding due to increasing organic animal husbandry. The high protein content of blue lupins shows the best protein quality of the home-grown grain legumes combined with low starch content. The feed quality of blue lupins can be analysed very quickly and cost-effi ciently with NIRS. Weed infestation in pure stands of blue lupin is often a problem. Mixed cropping systems are a good alternative for weed suppression, but the yield percentage of blue lupins in mixed cultivation is low. Weed infestation can be reduced by hoeing. For this, blue lupins were cultivated in wider row distances (25.0 cm, 37.5 cm) with the possibility of hoeing, and compared with the cultivation to 12.5 cm row distance (only harrowing).... |

Wheat genetic resources may be grown in organic farming systems or in less favourable areas for bread wheat species. Characteristics of hulled wheat species (23 varieties of einkorn, emmer wheat, spelt wheat) were studied and evaluated within a two-year trial period (which was executed on certified organic fields) and they were compared to characteristics of landraces and modern bread wheat varieties. The main aim of our study was to evaluate the potential uses of genetic resources of wheat in organic farming. The hulled wheat species were resistant to mildew and brown rust. Their grains were less contaminated with DON than the grains of the control varieties. The grain yield rate was reduced. Per hectare crude protein yield was higher in spelt and emmer... |

B vitamins, such as thiamine and riboflavin, are often supplemented in diets for farm animals to prevent deficiencies. However, information on the content of these two B vitamins in organic feedstuffs is scarce. Recently, up-to-date information was published by our group. The objective of this work was to use present data to determine the native contents of thiamine and riboflavin in diets used for monogastric animal feeding in organic farming. We used the results of our recent study on the native thiamine and riboflavin contents of organic wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), rye (Secale cereale L.), triticale (Triticosecale L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), field peas (Pisum sativum L.), field beans (Vicia faba L.), and blue lupins... |

Under organic farming conditions, twenty safflower genotypes were tested for genotype-by-environment interaction (GxE) and stability across four locations in Germany and Switzerland for seed yield and oil content.. ANOVA showed highly significant differences among the genotypes, locations and GxL interactions for yield and oil content. None of the genotypes had a significant regression coefficient or a mean square deviation from the regression coefficient, thereby all genotypes are considered stable for seed yield, whereas, BS-62929 and PI-5724755 were relatively the most stable for oil content. |

It appears that the growth of barley seedlings during spring is restricted by moderate internal deficiency of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in most cases. This agrees with the well-known increases of growth and grain yields if P and K fertilizer placement is used in spring barley growing. It is also evident from our earlier work that barley cultivars may differ in the P acquisition from soil (Gahoonia and Nielsen, 2004; Gahoonia and Nielsen, 2003). The existence of cereal varieties differing in the efficiency in P uptake from soil suggests that more nutrient efficient varieties can be identified among the existing varieties. The aim of this work was to study differences between selected barley cultivars in their soil-P and soil-K acquisition to... |
