Integrating molecular identification of pelagic eggs with geostatistical mapping to improve the delineation of North Sea fish spawning grounds ArchiMer
Lelievre, Stephanie; Jerome, Marc; Maes, Gregory E.; Vaz, Sandrine; Calaivany, Sachidhanandam; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique.
Maps of the spawning grounds of commercially important fishes are necessary when assessing the level of connectivity between life stages of fishes and for identifying ecologically valuable marine areas. A first step toward mapping the spawning grounds is a reliable and rapid species identification of pelagic fish eggs to assess the spatio-temporal distribution of spawning aggregations. As many species have similar egg sizes and morphology, the molecular validation of visually identified eggs is often essential for the use of such data in fisheries management. In the present study, we developed a rapid 16S rRNA PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay to distinguish between formalin-fixed fish eggs of dab Limanda limanda, flounder...

Molecular analysis and new records of the invasive polychaete Boccardia proboscidea (Annelida: Spionidae) ArchiMer
Radashevsky, Vasily, I; Pankova, Victoria V.; Malyar, Vasily V.; Neretina, Tatyana, V; Wilson, Robin S.; Worsfold, Tim M.; Diez, Maria E.; Harris, Leslie H.; Hourdez, Stephan; Labrune, Celine; Houbin, Celine; Kind, Britta; Kuhlenkamp, Ralph; Nygren, Arne; Bonifacio, Paulo; Bachelet, Guy.
The spionid polychaete Boccardia proboscidea Hartman, 1940 is a tube-dweller and shell/stone-borer widely occurring in temperate waters across the world and considered invasive in many areas. It was originally described from California, USA, and later reported from Pacific Canada, the Asian Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa, and northern Europe. The Bayesian inference analysis of sequence data of three gene fragments (836 bp in total) of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA, nuclear 28S rDNA, and Historie 3 has shown that individuals from the Pacific coasts of Canada and the USA, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Mediterranean France were genetically very similar (maximal average p-distance value, 0.49%, was between...

Spatial and temporal patterns of benthic macrofaunal communities on the deep continental margin in the Gulf of Guinea ArchiMer
Galeron, Joelle; Menot, Lenaick; Renaud, Nolwenn; Crassous, Philippe; Khripounoff, Alexis; Treignier, C.; Sibuet, M..
Density, taxonomic composition at higher taxon level and vertical distribution of benthic macrofaunal communities and sediment characteristics (pore water, nitrogen, organic carbon, sulfur, C/N ratio, n-alcohol biomarkers) were examined at three deep sites on the Congo-Gabon continental margin. This study was part of the multidisciplinary BIOZAIRE project that aimed at studying the deep benthic ecosystems in the Gulf of Guinea. Sampling of macrofaunal communities and of sediment was conducted during three cruises (January 2001, December 2001 and December 2003) at two downslope sites (4000 m depth), one located near the Congo submarine channel (15 km in the south) and the other one far from the channel (150km in the South). The third area located 8 km north...

Global Distribution, Composition and Abundance of Marine Litter ArchiMer
Galgani, Francois; Hanke, Georg; Maes, Thomas.
Marine debris is commonly observed everywhere in the oceans. Litter enters the seas from both land-based sources, from ships and other installations at sea, from point and diffuse sources, and can travel long distances before being stranded. Plastics typically constitute the most important part of marine litter sometimes accounting for up to 100 % of floating litter. On beaches, most studies have demonstrated densities in the 1 item m−2 range except for very high concentrations because of local conditions, after typhoons or flooding events. Floating marine debris ranges from 0 to beyond 600 items km−2. On the sea bed, the abundance of plastic debris is very dependent on location, with densities ranging from 0 to >7700 items km−2, mainly in coastal...

Prevalence and Distribution of the Third Coronary Artery in Kenyans International Journal of Morphology
OLABU,B. O; SAIDI,H. S; HASSANALI,J; OGENG'O,J. A.
A third coronary artery (TCA) has been defined as a direct branch from the right aortic sinus (RAS) that contributes to the vascularization of the infundibulum of the right ventricle (RV). The distribution of this artery may be important in surgical procedures and in understanding the extent and progression of acute myocardial infarction. Its reported prevalence however shows ethnic disparity. The aim of the study was describe the prevalence and distribution of the third coronary artery in a Kenyan population. 148 cadaveric and postmortem human adult hearts obtained from the Department of Human Anatomy, University of Nairobi, and the Chiromo and Nairobi city mortuaries were used after an ethical approval. The hearts were studied by gross dissection for the...

Organ tropism during the acute and chronic phases of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in BALB/c mice J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Oliveira,LRC; Picka,MCM; Nicolete,VC; Calvi,SA; Marcondes-Machado,J.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of Trypanosoma cruzi in the heart, liver, lung, and kidneys, using hemoculture and PCR analysis, of mice infected with different parasite strains during the acute and chronic phases of infection. Parasitemia curves revealed strain-specific biological behaviors. For the Y and JLP strains, the acute phase of infection started at days six and ten post-infection, parasitemia peaked at days seven and 15 post-infection, the chronic phase started at days nine and 28 post-infection, and animals started dying at days 19 and 120 post-infection, respectively. When the two strains were compared, the JLP strain exhibited reduced and slower replication rates associated with a delayed peak of parasitism and...

Bats of Saint Martin, French West Indies/Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles Mastozool. neotrop.
Genoways,Hugh H.; Pedersen,Scott C.; Larsen,Peter A.; Kwiecinski,Gary G.; Huebschman,Jeffrey J..
Six species of bats have been previously reported from the Antillean island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten- Artibeus jamaicensis, Brachyphylla cavernarum, Molossus molossus, Tadarida brasiliensis, Noctilio leporinus, and Myotis nigricans nesopolus. Our field research reported herein documents an additional three species of bats from the island for the first time- Monophyllus plethodon, Ardops nichollsi, and Natalus stramineus. Re-examination of the single voucher of Myotis nigricans nesopolus has led us to exclude this species from the fauna of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. Based on our field research and the study of specimens housed in museum collections, we present information on the eight species of bats that we have documented as occurring on Saint...

Distribución de Necromys lactens y Phyllotis osilae (Rodentia: Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) en el noroeste argentino: modelos predictivos basados en el concepto de nicho ecológico Mastozool. neotrop.
Jayat,J. Pablo; Pacheco,Silvia.
We used presence data from field records, museum specimens and literature sources to model the potential distribution of two species of sigmodontine rodents, Necromys lactens and Phyllotis osilae in northwestern Argentina, based on environmental variables. We used the DOMAIN program, which based on presence data defines the environmental space that imposes conditions to the species distribution. We worked with two data sets, one constituted only by reliable data and the other one constituted by these reliable data plus other information considered more doubtful because of its controvertible identification and location. The models obtained from the reliable data set were more efficient in the prediction of distribution than doubtful data, with Kappa index...

New records of the rare Histiotus magellanicus (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) and other bats from Central Patagonia, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Giménez,Analía L; Giannini,Norberto P; Schiaffini,Mauro I; Martin,Gabriel M.
Histiotus magellanicus (Philippi, 1866) is a poorly known Patagonian bat. Here we report on nine newly captured specimens and one unpublished locality from museum specimen that significantly improve our knowledge of this species' distribution, by incorporating two Argentine provinces and reducing the distributional gap between northern and southern historical records. The new records confirm H. magellanicus as a Subantarctic Forests endemic. In addition, we report new specimens and localities from four poorly known Patagonian bats for Chubut province: Histiotus macrotus, Myotis chiloensis, Lasiurus varius (Vespertilionidae) and Tadarida brasiliensis (Molossidae)
