The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, a native of Europe, occurs naturally from Norway to Morocco in the North-Eastern Atlantic and in the whole Mediterranean Basin; It has been a harvested species for at least 6000 years. Natural populations are also observed in eastern North America, from Maine to Rhode Island, following intentional introductions in the 1940s and 1950s. The species was also introduced in Canada for aquaculture purpose 30 years ago and some populations naturalised in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia. These stocks were imported from naturalised populations in Maine whose ancestors originated in the Netherlands. |

This work is divided into 4 parts. First, in a broad introduction, a short history is given on albacore fishing in the bay of Biscay from its origin until its present extension in the neighbourhood of the Acores. This is followed by a history of the research beginning with the first attempts at classifying the albacore and then with the first investigations done on research ships; then the authors explain the reasons and the evolution of their work with reference to what was already known. The 2nd part of the study describes the campaigns of research from 1967 to 1972 to study the albacore in the north east Atlantic and the fishing and prospecting techniques used during these campaigns. The 3rd part of this investigation shows the research works sensu... |

Palinurus elephas and Palinurus mauritanicus are the only species of the family Palinuridae that occur in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean. Of the two, Palinurus elephas is the most abundant and accessible and has traditionally been the preferred target of lobster fisheries throughout its range. Palinurus mauritanicus has a deeper distribution and has been an important target of fisheries mainly in the Central Eastern Atlantic. The high unit value and the relative scarcity of these species have been important obstacles to research and knowledge of their biology, ecology and fisheries is limited. Nevertheless, over time a considerable number of studies has been conducted, though most of these are contained in university theses or in publications of... |

On December 11, 1999, Erika, an oil tanker flying the Maltese flag and loaded with 31 000 t of heavy fuel oil, was making its way from Dunkirk to Livorno when it encountered difficult weather conditions Southwest of the Brittany coast gale force winds 8 to 9 and 6 mwaves). On the morning of 12th December, the captain broadcast an SOS; his vessel was breaking in two, approximately 30 nautical miles to south of Penmarc'h Point (Fig. 1; Finistère, France). The fore section of the vessel sank during the night of the 12-13 December and the aft section was taken in tow on the morning December 13, but subsequently sank in the early afternoon. Both parts lay in 120 m of water and were located 10 km apart. Approximately, 19 000 t of heavy fuel oil were spilled into... |

Only seven types of mammals are known to be venomous, including slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.). Despite the evolutionary significance of this unique adaptation amongst Nycticebus, the structure and function of slow loris venom is only just beginning to be understood. Here we review what is known about the chemical structure of slow loris venom. Research on a handful of captive samples from three of eight slow loris species reveals that the protein within slow loris venom resembles the disulphide-bridged heterodimeric structure of Fel-d1, more commonly known as cat allergen. In a comparison of N. pygmaeus and N. coucang, 212 and 68 compounds were found, respectively. Venom is activated by combining the oil from the brachial arm gland with saliva, and can... |

Several aspects of the ecology of Jameson’s green mamba Dendroaspis jamesoni jamesoni (Traill, 1843), a large-sized arboreal elapid snake, are studied in southern Nigeria. This species 18 common and widespread in the region studied. On the basis of the analysis of both the habitats of capture of the various specimens and the results of a logistical regression model, it seems that this species inhabits a wide variety of habitats (including secondary forest patches and the plantation-forest mosaic), and that its local distribution is not influenced by the Presence of any macrohabitat parameter. Green mambas were observed both in the dry and in the wet season, without any statistical bias toward a particular season. Adult sex-ratio was aPproximately 1 : 1.... |

Eight new species and one new genus of Scleractinian corals from Darvel Bay, North-western Borneo are described and illustrated. Enigmopora darveliensis, Acropora ridzwani, Lithophyllon ranjiti, Pectinia crassa, Mycedium spina, Plerogyra multilobata, Plerogyra diabolotus, and Plerogyra cauliformis. The evolutionary and distributional significance of the species is discussed. Borneo’s unique equatorial location and stable geological history are held responsible for its high diversity of corals with a number of unique species. The morphology of Enigmopora darveliensis is discussed and compared to other supposedly primitive extant corals. The endemic status of most of the Plerogyra species, with their unusually large polyps, is due to their narrow ecological... |

Each dipterocarp has its own species of fungus, forming an ectomycorrhiza. From literature and experiments (in East Kalimantan and in vitro) ecological consequences are explored. These help explain the clumping of dipterocarp trees in the forest, the lack of hybrids, the poor dispersal, and speciation as dependent on the viability of the root-fungus combination on a particular soil type. Mycorrhizas are located in the top soil. They are extremely sensitive to increase of soil temperatures as occur after canopy opening, and to soil compaction by machinery and log skidding. This explains the setback of dipterocarp growth after crude logging. It is suggested that avoidance of soil compaction during logging, quick restoration of soil cover, and the use of... |

Pitcher plants of the family Nepenthaceae are vines or subscandent shrubs which produce modified leaf organs that in most species serve to attract, trap, retain and digest animals for nutritional benefit. The sole genus within the family, Nepenthes, is abundant and diverse in Malesia. Previous taxonomic treatments of Nepenthes have relied almost entirely on the morphological features of the plants, with characteristics of the pitchers, inflorescences, leaf blades and indumentum being the most informative. Recent ecological research demonstrates that unique morphological characteristics and trap geometries provide useful taxonomic information, but this is often lost or obscured when specimens are prepared for herbaria by pressing them. In this paper, we... |

During antarctic macrozoobenthos research, colonies of Monobrachium were found on small bivalves. The species problem of the genus Monobrachium is discussed and it is stated that there are three species. However, the widespread species Monobrachium parasitum might be a species-complex comprising several species. This can only be confirmed by rearing experiments and/or molecular investigations. Host specificity and the factors influencing the infection of the bivalve species are shown. The impact of the infection is demonstrated to be harmful to the host bivalve, although not of a parasitic nature. The phenomenon of bipolarity within the genus Monobrachium is discussed. |
