Multiple visions of the future and major environmental scenarios ArchiMer
Lacroix, Denis; Laurent, Louis; De Menthière, Nicolas; Schmitt, Bertrand; Béthinger, Audrey; David, Bernard; Didier, Christophe; Parent Du Châtelet, Jacques.
Scientific programming in environmental science often relies on short-term (3 to 5 years) trend-based projections for contextual elements like the demography or the economy to construct or justify its choice of priorities. However, this approach does not take into account numerous factors of change or disruption over a longer term (10 to 20, or even 50 years), although a decade or two are needed to effectively deal with the stakes of research. These stakes become more acute over the long term, as consequences of predicted changes (e. g. climate) or other factors such as pollution, biodiversity erosion, reduction of ecosystemic services.... This complex question justifies turning to a foresight approach. Because it enables tipping points to be envisaged for...

Macro-geographical differences influenced by family-based expression on cultured pearl grade, shape and colour in the black-lip "pearl oyster" Pinctada margaritifera: a preliminary bi-local case study in French Polynesia ArchiMer
Ky, Chin-long; Blay, Carole; Aiho, Vaite; Cabral, Philippe; Le Moullac, Gilles; Lo, Cedrik.
In French Polynesia, the aquaculture of P. margaritifera is carried out in numerous grow-out sites, located over three archipelagos (Gambier, Society and Tuamotu). To evaluate the impact of macro-geographical effects of these growing sites on pearl quality traits, five hatcheries produced families were used as homogeneous donor oysters in an experimental graft. The molluscs were then reared in two commercial locations: Tahaa island (Society) and Rangiroa atoll (Tuamotu). At harvest, eight pearl quality traits were recorded and compared: surface defects, lustre, grade, circles, shape categories, darkness level, body and secondary colour and visual colour categories. Overall inter-site comparison revealed that: 1) all traits were affected by grow-out...

Snakebites in Paraíba, Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Albuquerque,H. N.; Fernandes,A.; Albuquerque,I. C. S..
The epidemiological data on snakebites in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, is scarce. This accounts for the difficulties in helping the victims. Hence, to obtain the clinical and epidemic profile of the snakebite accidents in Paraíba, we studied the number of cases recorded in this state between January 1995 and December 2000. The data was collected from these sources: Center for Toxicological Assistance (Centro de Assistência Toxicológica - CEATOX) and State Secretariat of Health (Secretaria Estadual de Saude), João Pessoa; 3rd Regional Health Center (3º Núcleo Regional de Saúde - NRS) and the Division of Epidemiological Vigilance of the Municipal Secretariat of Health (Divisão de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde - DVE/SMS), Campina...

Sensitivities of marine macrozoobenthos to environmental pressures in the Netherlands Naturalis
Gittenberger, A.; Loon, W.M.G.M. van.
The relative sensitivities of 309 common invertebrate species in Dutch marine waters are presented for environmental and anthropogenic pressures like organic enrichment, sedimentation and fisheries. The species were furthermore appointed to trophic groups like suspension and deposit feeders. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment uses these data when calculating the Benthic Ecosystem Quality Index 2 and the Infaunal Trophic Index. These metrics aid in the mandatory monitoring of ecological quality for example for the European Water Framework Directive. The common Dutch species were selected based on their abundance according to, 1. the mwtl dataset including results of on-going monitoring programs issued by the Ministry, 2. the...

Reproduction of two loricariid species in a confined river and implications for environmental impacts of dams Neotropical Ichthyology
De Fries,Lucas; Rosa,Gilberto da; Silva,José Pezzi da; Vilella,Fábio Silveira; Becker,Fernando Gertum.
ABSTRACT Fish reproduction in floodplain rivers is often linked to flow regime and with the inundation of floodplain habitats. However, in confined rivers, where floodplains are absent, the relation between reproduction and flow can in comparison be expected to be distinct. In this study, we describe the reproductive life-history of Hemiancistrus fuliginosus and Hypostomus isbrueckeri in a confined river and discuss its differences relative to floodplain loricariids and also the implications for effects of dam construction and flow regulation. We found the reproductive peak of both species occurred during lowering waters, just after maximum river flow, in contrast to floodplain species that tend to spawn during rising waters. The studied species presented...

Industrial Environment Dimension in the Process of Sustainable Development in Ivory Coast OceanDocs
Ohassane, K..
While industrial growth is mainly a function of market forces, governments actively pursue policies and activities to accelerate industrialization. These policies, directly or indirectly, affect the natural environment. Sound industrial and environmental policies are not incompatible, even though it is difficult task either to set and enforce at the same time environmental standard that do not have some negative impact on industrial development options, or to formulate industrial policies that take environmental issues fully into account. The objective of this study is to elaborate a national assessment for the purpose of the industrial environment overview in the process of sustainable development in Côte d’Ivoire which is a part of the systematic...

Biologie et exploitation du poulpe Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier, 1797) des côtes mauritaniennes OceanDocs
Dia, M.A..

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic plasticiser materials in the sea water of alexandria coastal area OceanDocs
Emara, H.I.; El-Deeb, M.K.Z..
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the real contaminants of petroleum, were detected in the surface seawater of Alexandria coastal area in winter and spring seasons of 1995. Their order of predominance, particularly for the individual components were principally due to the processes of input, transport and fluxes. Variation of PAHs was not following seasonal changes but it was slightly affected by partial dissolution of the lowerboiling aromatic hydrocarbons. The most abundant component of aromatic hydrocarbons was pyrene (PAH),112ngI-1 followed by naphthalene(56ngI-1) and its alkylated derivatives (dicyclic), then phenanthrene(14ngI-1) and its methylated derivatives (tricyclic). The potential fish carcinogenic PAH, dibenz [a & c] anthracene was...

Environment And Sustainable Development; The Role Of The Engineer OceanDocs
Ganesan, C.T..
Today when the world stands on the threshold of a new era of ecological awareness and environmental activism it is important to have a clear understanding sustainable development. Different ways of explaining the term, "sustainable development" are discussed. In southern African regions problems of population growth and unbalanced distribution of population are continuously focussing problems to the planners. The impact of sustainability on environment is very well described. In most of urban areas in southern African countries the water is heavily polluted with domestic sewage, industrial effluents and solid wastes. A detailed study in this aspect is made. Rural-urban interface for sustainable development is described with particular relevance southern...

Heat and salt storages in the offshore water of the Red Sea OceanDocs
Kamel, M.S.; Eid, F.M..
The seasonal changes of heat and salt storages in the offshore water of the Red Sea were studied using a historical data collected from different cruises during the period from 1924 to 1998. The heat storage within water column of different depths exhibits a seasonal variability. The heat storage is low during winter and high during summer. Also, the heat storage increases from north to south. The maximum values of heat storage are found in the southern central part of the Red Sea. It reached about 29.9x109 J/m2 within the water column of 300m depth. The seasonal change of heat storage from the annual mean is negative during winter and spring, while it is positive during summer and autumn. It has higher values during winter and summer, while its value...

Inception Report The Preparatory Survey on the Project for Fisheries Pormotion in Republic of Ghana OceanDocs
Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
Challenges the fishing ports of Ghana, notably Sekondi Port include the congestion and the deteriorating efficiency due to the increase of users and decreasing quality of catch due to the shortage and ageing of landing facilities, fish handling sheds and ice-making facilities. The Government of Ghana made a request to Japan for an extension of the wharf, construction of additional breakwater, cold storage and ice-making facility at Sekondi Fishing Port in 2010 in order to overcome these challenges. In response the Government of Japan conducted a survey for the project to promote efficiency and improvement of Ghana's fishery sector. The survey was to examine the need, relevance and urgency of the proposed project.

Pre-concentration and separation of Fe (III), Co (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) by solid-phase extraction using silica modified with N-propylsalicylaldimine OceanDocs
Hamed, M.A..
N- propylsalicylaldimine based on porous silica, as ion exchanger, was used for the separation and preconcentration of Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ from surface water samples collected from eleven locations at Nile river, Mediterranean and Red seas as well as tap water of Mansoura city. The effects of pH value, time of stirring, concentration of eluting acids and some common ionic species on the separation and preconcentration of the investigated metal ions in synthetic aqueous solutions were studied. The results indicate that the optimum conditions for separation are pH = 9.0-9.5 and time of stirring = 30 min. HCl is better eluent for the investigated metal ions than HNO3 except for Fe3+. Citrate and EDTA gave severe interference on the recovery of the metal...

Enhancing environmental awareness through marine education OceanDocs
Collins, M.A.J..
Throughout this colloquium reference has been made to a number of environmental problems, most of them due to human activities (e.g. clearing mangrove forests, dynamite fishing, sewage pollution, etc.). While attempts are being made to correct these problems through new legislation and educating adults in more environmentally friendly practices, it is my thesis that we should be putting much more effort into the environmental education of young, school-age children since such efforts will, in the long run, have the greater impact on environmental awareness.

The work of the media in whale strandings OMA
Noël, L..
The stranding of sperm whales at the Belgian coast in November 1994 attracted the general attention of the media. Excessive shows of passion often encountered in other parts of the world when cetaceans die, were not observed. An examination of the articles which appeared in the press shows that the event was merely treated as a major, but common news item. Priority was given to the daily developments. The work of the authorities and that of the scientists were given similar status as the anecdotic aspects. The importance given to controversies regarding the management of the situation must be stressed. The media did not go deeply into the biology of sperm whales, the stranding that occurred abroad, or the various hypotheses that were discussed. How could...
