Conhecimento e conservação dos peixes marinhos e estuarinos (Chondrichthyes e Teleostei) da costa norte do Brasil Biota Neotropica
Marceniuk,Alexandre Pires; Caires,Rodrigo Antunes; Wosiacki,Wolmar Benjamin; Dario,Fabio Di.
The tropical western South Atlantic, which includes a substantial portion of the Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone, is a region of endemism broadly recognized as being of prime importance for the conservation of the marine biodiversity. The north coast of Brazil, which comprises the states of Amapá, Pará and Maranhão from the mouth of the rio Oiapoque to the mouth of the rio Parnaíba, harbors the largest continuous mangrove in the world, with approximately 8,900 km2. The high discharge of freshwater and continental sediments in the delta of the Amazonas affects the regime of tides, ocean currents, and several oceanographic processes of the north coast, with direct impact on the composition of the biota found in the region. Despite its economic value and...

Diversity of Odonata (Insecta) larvae in streams and farm ponds of a montane region in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pires,Mateus Marques; Kotzian,Carla Bender; Spies,Marcia Regina; Neri,Damaris Battistel.
This study presents an inventory of the genera of Odonata found in streams and artificial farm ponds in a montane region, with temperate climate, in southern Brazil. Differences in richness of lotic and lentic environments were also investigated. The diversity of odonate families and genera in southernmost Brazil is lower than in warmer, either tropical or subtropical, regions of the country. Nine genera are new records for the region and six genera had their geographical ranges extended to regions with temperate climate of the Neotropics. The overall richness and especially the overall abundance recorded in the studied area are possibly determined by the occurrence of numerous farm ponds because natural standing waters are scarce in the region. The...

RAPELD: a modification of the Gentry method for biodiversity surveys in long-term ecological research sites Biota Neotropica
Magnusson,William E.; Lima,Albertina P.; Luizão,Regina; Luizão,Flávio; Costa,Flávia R. C.; Castilho,Carolina Volkmer de; Kinupp,V. F..
Our objectives were to develop a method that would be appropriate for long-term ecological studies, but that would permit rapid surveys to evaluate biotic complementarity and land-use planning in Amazonia. The Amazon basin covers about 7 million km². Therefore, even a sparse coverage, with one sample site per 10.000 km², would require about 700 sampling sites. Financial considerations limit the number of sites and investment at each site, but incomplete coverage makes evaluation of biotic complementarity difficult or impossible (Reddy & Dávalos 2003). Our next challenge is to install similar systems throughout Amazonia. The cost, based on modification of Al Gentry's original design is moderate (less than US$ 50.000 per site if it is not necessary...

Turbelários límnicos (Platyhelminthes) em ecossistemas de arroz irrigado da Planície Costeira do sul do Brasil Biota Neotropica
Vara,Dioneia Conceição da; Leal-Zanchet,Ana Maria.
Turbellarians occur in a variety of wetlands, being also abundant in temporary water bodies. Several turbellarians are top predators in their microhabitats, many of them feeding on zooplankton. However, they are seldom taken into account in biodiversity studies. Information on turbellarian diversity in Brazilian freshwater ecosystems mainly came from taxonomical studies. In southern Brazil, there are a high number of wetlands, most of them represented by rice fields. Despite their impact on natural areas, these managed ecosystems can play an important role in freshwater biodiversity conservation. The aim of the present work was to report on an inventory done in irrigated rice fields of three areas of the Coastal Plain of southern Brazil, viz. Cachoeirinha,...

News from the west: the orchid bees from Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Euglossina) Biota Neotropica
Faria,Luiz R. R.; Neves,Betânia Cristina; Arce,Araceli Judith; Hirschfeld,Maria Noel Clerici; Zanella,Fernando César Vieira.
Abstract: Orchid bees were surveyed at Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, the largest remnant of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest in Brazil. Seven species were collected, and Eufriesea violacea (Blanchard) was the most common species, followed by Euglossa annectans Dressler. The observed species richness and species composition agree with what is known for the local euglossine faunas in fragments of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest of southern and southeastern Brazil. On the other hand, the abundance of individuals was remarkably low. The occurrence of a severe winter in 2013 and the collection of several males in other fragments suggest that this noteworthy low abundance can be fortuitous.

Determining the site index of Teak (Tectona grandis L.) plantations in Tabasco, Mexico Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Minoche,Djhon; Herrero,Celia; Dominguez-Dominguez,Marivel; Martinez-Zurimendi,Pablo.
Abstract Forest stand productivity is defined as the quantitative estimation of a specific area's potential to produce biomass over a determined period of time. The site index has been the predominant method used to evaluate forest stand productivity. Teak is one of the most accepted species within the international timber market due to the physical and aesthetic qualities of this wood. The aim of this study was to determine the site index of teak plantations. The study was conducted in teak plantations of Tabasco. Data were obtained from a network of 10 plantations consisting of 35 plots measured over four successive inventories (2003 to 2006). The data were fitted to five models, of which four were based on proposed finite difference equations and a...
