Estimate of the optimal level of concentrates for dairy cows on tropical pastures by using the concept of marginal analysis R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,André Soares de; Campos,José Maurício de Souza; Lana,Rogério de Paula; Detmann,Edenio; Valadares Filho,Sebastião de Campos.
It was adopted in this work a methodology to estimate the optimal level of concentrate food for dairy cows on tropical pastures based on the theory of marginal analysis. An empiric model was developed and validated for application of the methodology using a database composed of 62 means of treatments from 32 studies in which milk production was evaluated regarded to the levels of concentrate feeding. Milk production (MP) showed quadratic behavior in response to concentrate intake (CI): MP (kg/cow/day) = 10.554 + 1.5855CI - 0.0552CI². Evaluation of the MP values observed over the predicted ones pointed the non-rejection of the null hypothesis, indicating that the model can be applied on the prediction of milk production, and consequently, on the optimal...

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of protected fat from palm oil on body weight and milk production and composition of lactating Lacaune ewes. Four treatments (0, 20, 40, and 60 g kg−1 as fed) of protected fat from palm oil were used to feed nine animals in each group. Isoproteic and isoenergetic diets were formulated and adjusted for each animal after milk weighing. Corn silage was used as roughage on the same proportion of concentrated to feed all animals. Milk samples were collected weekly for chemical analyses up to the seventh week of the lactation period and every other week after that until the end of the lactation period (182 days). Increased levels of protected fat in the diet of lactating ewes resulted in lower body...

Practicability of somatic cell count and electrical conductivity as subclinical mastitis diagnostic tests in camels (Camelus dromedarius) Scientia Agricola
Aljumaah,Riyadh Saleh; Almutairi,Fares; Ayadi,Moez; Alshaikh,Mohammed Abdulrahman; Al-Haidary,Ahmed Abrahim; Samara,Emad Mohammed.
ABSTRACT Critical gaps exist in our understanding of the diagnostic reliability of subclinical mastitis tests in dromedary camels. Using a retrospective longitudinal cross-sectional approach, 191 lactating camels were randomly sampled from 47 camel herds to investigate at first the practicability of somatic cell count (SCC) and electrical conductivity (EC) tests as subclinical mastitis tests in camels through their validations by California mastitis test (CMT) score, and then through the subsequent employments of those objective means in assessing certain potential risk markers predisposing camels to this disease. Results indicate the reliability and validity of SCC test, in contrast to EC test, in distinguishing subclinical mastitic udders in camels, as...

Metabolizable protein supply according to the nrc (2001) for dairy cows grazing elephant grass Scientia Agricola
Voltolini,Tadeu Vinhas; Santos,Flávio Augusto Portela; Martinez,Junio Cesar; Imaizumi,Hugo; Pires,Alexandre Vaz; Penati,Marco Antonio.
Tropical pastures fertilized with nitrogen may have high crude protein (CP) contents with high rumen degradability. High crude protein concentrates offered to cows grazing these pastures may increase feed costs without positive effects on their performance. The objectives of this trial were to evaluate the effects of increasing metabolizable protein (MP) supply beyond the NRC (2001) recommendations for mid lactating dairy cows grazing elephant grass pasture (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. cv. Napier) managed with high stocking rates. Three concentrates (6.3 kg DM-1 cow-1 day-1) were evaluated: control (17%CP) was adjusted in relation to MP according to the NRC (2001); the other two contained extra soybean meal, to increase the CP content to 21.2% (CP) and...

Quality based payment program and milk quality in dairy cooperatives of Southern Brazil: an econometric analysis Scientia Agricola
Botaro,Bruno Garcia; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber; Santos,Marcos Veiga dos.
Programs designed to enhance milk quality have been used to motivate dairy farmers to improve the quality of the raw milk they produce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between a milk quality payment program and four indicative variables of milk quality, by testing bulk tank somatic cell count (SCC), bulk tank total bacterial count (TBC), fat (FAT) and protein (PROT) percentages over three years in four dairy cooperatives in Southern Brazil. We used a multiple regression econometric model estimated from market data of milk delivered by farmers to the cooperatives. Bulk tank milk samples (n = 19,644) were monthly collected. The data set was analyzed for the effects of seasonality, average daily volume of milk, the award/penalty,...

Simulation model for particle dynamics in rumen of cattle fed sugarcane diet Scientia Agricola
Collao-Saenz,Edgar Alain; Dijkstra,Jan; Paiva,Paulo César de Aguiar; Bannink,André; Arcuri,Pedro Braga; Teixeira,Júlio César; Olalquiaga Pérez,Juan Ramón; David,Flávia Maria.
Animal simulation models are sets of equations used to describe biological processes. A non-steady state simulation model of cattle digestion is presented in order to represent nutrient availability as a response to feed intake pattern and the kinetics of particle size reduction. Variables representing the particle size reduction and discontinuous voluntary feed intake were included in a mechanistic model created to optimize the supplementation of sugarcane based diets. In general the predicted values were very close to observed values for fibre and nitrogen flows. The model has not shown consistent bias in relation to the behavior of the observed data of duodenal flow of neutral detergent fiber and non-ammonia nitrogen. Milk production simulations were...

A conceptual model to describe heat stress in dairy cows from actual to questionable loops Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Molina Benavides,Raúl Andrés; Sánchez Guerrero,Hugo; Atzori,Alberto Stanislao.
Abstract Thermal environment is recognized to be one the most important ecological factor to determine domestic animal growth, development and productivity for direct and indirect effects on its physiology and behavior. Despite having specific and individual adaptation, is very common, within seasonal or diurnal temperature variations, animals deal with situations outside their thermal comfort zone. Due to heat stress, dairy cows reduce milk production and fertility, and therefore, had achieved an increasing in metabolic disorders incidence, causing low revenues to farm in short and medium periods. Due to world climate change more impact of the meteorological variables on animal responses is expected for the future. This study aimed to describe and...
