As part of the EU Core Organic II research project ICOPP (Improved contribution of local feed to support 100% organic feed supply to pigs and poultry), a feeding trial was conducted in which grass pea seeds were included in diets for weaned piglets. The grass pea is a hardy grain legume that produces protein-rich seeds, but due to its content of the neurotoxin ODAP, intensive feeding is risky. Since ODAP is water-soluble and susceptible to heat, hydrothermal treatment (=toasting) greatly reduces toxicity. The occurrence of health and welfare problems is probably different in organic pig herds compared to conventional production systems. Improved management in the individual herd may reduce problems and to ensure a high level of animal health and product safety it is necessary to be able to monitor and assess risk factors present in the herd. An expert panel of 10 Danish and Swedish veterinarians and pig production advisers has assisted in the selection of common health and welfare problems in organic pig herds and the identification of risk factors. Important health and welfare problems and the corresponding risk factors are presented in the text. Based on this a HACCP programme for organic pig farmers as a management tool is currently being developed. |

Nach dem Verbot der betäubungslosen Ferkelkastration nach VO (EG) 889 (2008) zum 01.01.2012 stellt die Ebermast eine mögliche Alternative für die ökologische Schweinefleischerzeugung dar. Kødkvaliteten for sæsonproducerede økologiske små hangrise (ca. 30 kg slagtevægt), store sogrise (100, 90 og 70 kg) og søer slagtet efter første læg (120 og 80 kg) er undersøgt for to sotyper (Landrace x Yorkshire = LY og Sortbroget Dansk Landrace = SB) og tre krydsninger af han- og sogrise (LYxDuroc = LYxD, SBxD og SBxSB). De sortbrogede grise og i lidt mindre grad SBxD har mørkere kød end LY / LYxD grisene og kødfarven er mørkere end hos konventionelle og økologiske slagtesvin ved normal slagtevægt.
