Infection models with Flavobacterium psychrophilum Organic Eprints
Madsen, Lone; Dalsgaard, Inger.
High mortalities among rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry are often the result of infections caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, and in Denmark this pathogen can be found in nearly all freshwater fish farms. The infection can be treated with antibiotics, but lower sensitivity against the infection is an increasing problem for some of the used drugs, wherefore alternative treatment methods (e.g. bacteriophages) are investigated. Prophylactic measures (e.g. feed additives) are another approach, so infections with the bacterium can be avoided, before they become a problem. No matter if the focus is on prophylactic or alternative treatment, reliable infection models are needed to evaluate the treatments as well as to get more knowledge about...

Kuidas talvised vahekultuurid mõjutavad mulla umbrohuseemnete sisaldust Organic Eprints
Kuht, Jaan; Talgre, Liina; Madsen, Helena; Eremeev, Viacheslav; Loit, Evelin; Luik, Anne.

Deleuran, Lise C.; Boelt, Birte.
Gulerod (Daucus carota L. subsp. Sativus (Hoffm.) I grønsagsproduktionen (1.

Traditional homemade herbal remedies used by farmers of northern Switzerland to treat skin alterations and wounds in livestock Organic Eprints
Disler, M.; Schmid, K.; Ivemeyer, S.; Hamburger, M.; Walkenhorst, M..
Ethnoveterinary surveys are missing for wide areas of Europe. During the years 2011 and 2012 80 farmers on 64 farms in seven cantons of Northern Switzerland (Aargau, Zürich, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Appenzell Innerhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden) were interviewed. More than 500 homemade herbal remedies (HMHR) were documented regarding the used plant species, modes of preparation, dosage, routes of administration, category of use and origin of knowledge. A selection was made by choosing all HMHR which (a) contain only one herbal drug, (b) are used to treat skin alterations and wounds, (c) were administered to the skin, (d) were obtained from forefathers and relatives and (e) have been used by the interview partners themselves at least 5 times...

Holistic management – a critical review of Allan Savory’s grazing method Organic Eprints
Nordborg, Maria.
Allan Savory is the man behind holistic grazing and the founder of the Savory Institute. Savory claims that holistic grazing can stop desertification and reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels to pre-industrial levels in a few decades. In this report, we review the literature on holistic grazing in order to evaluate the scientific support behind these statements.

Why diversify annual biomass production for energy – exemplified by green house gas emissions from the Danish IBUS bioethanol production concept Organic Eprints
Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Thomsen, Mette Hedegaard; Jensen, Erik Steen.
There is a need for integrating the biomass starting point into the energy manufacturing steps. It will secure that bioenergy is produced with limited use of non-renewable fossil fuel to secure that in the application of biomass a net emission reduction of green house gasses take place along the whole chain. Intercropping, defined as the cultivation of two or more species simultaneously on the same area of land, is an traditional practice still widespread in the tropics and common in developed countries before the ‘fossilization’ of agriculture. This cropping strategy is based on the manipulation of plant interactions in time and space to optimize resource use and productivity. It is regarded as the practical application of basic ecological principles...

Reply of mulch systems on weeds and yield components in potatoes Organic Eprints
Dvorak, Petr; Tomasek, Jaroslav; Hamouz, Karel; Kuchtova, Perla.
Surface mulch is an important factor of soil protection technology in the cultivation of potatoes. Presented herein are the results of three years (2009–2011) of field trials at two sites (Leškovice and Uhříněves), where two cultivars (Finka and Katka) were grown. Three mulching treatments (grass mulch after planting, grass mulch before germination and black polypropylene mulch textile) were used in the study. The weight of marketable tubers (tuber over 40 mm) and tuber size distribution were influenced significantly by mulching. The application of grass mulch on surface of the row ensured a 20.5–24.8% increase of weight of marketable tubers and higher occurrence of tubers over 56 mm (resp. tubers 56–60 mm and over 60 mm). There was no consistent effect of...

Efterafgrøder efter kløvergræs før vårhvede Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Henrik.

Management practices’ effect on milk production, somatic cell count and mastitis in Swedish organic dairy farms Organic Eprints
Wingren, Josefin.
The most common animal health problem in organic dairy production is mastitis. It is considered to be one of the most serious welfare problem in dairy production, as well as an economic problem as it often leads to a reduced milk yield and reduced profit. To combat this problem, the focus in organic dairy production is laid on management strategies to e.g. reduce the use of antibiotics and improve the animal health and welfare. In 2015, the EU-funded project OrganicDairyHealth started in seven European countries, including Sweden. Within the project, an extensive survey on housing, management, health and production was sent out to organic dairy farmers in each country, and this thesis is based on the data from the Swedish survey. This master thesis’ aim...

Nitrogen and carbon release during decomposition of roots and shoots of leguminous green manure crops Organic Eprints
Talgre, Liina; Roostalu, Hugo; Maeorg, Erkki; Lauringson, Enn.
In Nordic conditions, soils are frozen during winter, affecting the decomposition rates of crop residues. Hence, the decomposition rates of above- and underground biomass and the dynamics of the N and C released into the soil were studied in trials focused on green manure crops. The decomposition of the residue and N release from the residue varied among the five species of legume tested. There was a marked difference in decomposition rates between shoots and roots, which may also be explained by the differences in the chemical composition of the residue. The shoot residue decomposes rapidly and it serves as a source of N for the subsequent crop. The root residue decomposes more slowly and this had a positive effect in a crop rotation in the second year....

Intercropped green manure legumes in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) for organic grass seed production Organic Eprints
Gislum, R.; Boelt, B..
Results from field experiments in 2000 and 2002 showed that intercropping of perennial ryegrass and green manure legumes prolonged the time for nitrogen accumulation in the grass seed crop. The effect on the grass seed yield was dependent on the green manure legume species. However, using the intercropping technique it was possible to achieve seed yield at 1012 kg ha-1 in 2000 and at 829 kg ha-1 in 2000, which is very promising for the future organic seed production of perennial ryegrass.

Horn, Marco; Steinwidder, Andreas; Podstatzky, Leopold; Gasteiner, Johann; Zollitsch, Werner.
The core task of sustainable milk production is the conversion of forage into milk, dairy products and, as a by-product, into meat. In Europe and North America, for decades dairy cows were selected for a high genetic merit for milk production under high input farming conditions. It is therefore questionable whether these "high input genotypes" are suitable for forage-based, organic farming systems. The objective of this study was to compare two cow types concerning their suitability for an Alpine organic, low input dairy production system. The cow types used were conventional Brown Swiss (BV) on the one hand and a specific strain of Holstein Friesian (HFL), selected for lifetime performance, on the other. Both cow types were managed within one herd in an...

Diversity of organic livestock systems in Europe Organic Eprints
Roderick, Steve; Padel, Susanne; Younie, David.
There is significant diversity in livestock production across Europe, as a consequence of a range of climatic, historic and economic factors. Yet there are common standards and goals. Enlargement of the European Union has added emphasis to the importance of this diversity. Statistics representing the recent development of organic farming illustrates the considerable variation across the continent in relation to land use and the main animal species farmed. This paper examines some of the climatic and historical impacts of a diverse Europe and recom-mends a degree of flexibility in the adoption of or-ganic standards.
