Infection of wheat seeds with Fusarium spp. causes seedling blight. As a result of this disease, fields sown with infected seeds show a reduced plant density. This is especially a problem in organic agriculture, for which currently no practical seed disinfection methods are available. In the present project we investigated whether spring wheat cultivars differ in sensitivity to seedling blight, whether the possible differences could be linked to cultivar differences in early growth rates, and what size the delay in canopy closure resulting from the plant reductions was. Six spring wheat cultivars (Melon, Lavett, SW Kungsjet, Epos, Pasteur, Thasos), containing three infection levels (averages 5, 15 and 27%) of Fusarium culmorum were obtained and were sown... |

The Institute of Fruit Breeding has a long tradition in breeding resistant apple cultivars. Systematic resistance breeding started in the 1930 ties in Müncheberg. Material developed in Müncheberg was transferred in the 1970 ties to the Institute for Fruit Research, the antecessor of the Institute of Fruit Breeding. Based on this material, a couple of multiple resistant cultivars were generated. The time schedule for combining biotic and abiotic resistant traits which demonstrates the long-lasting period necessary for systematic resistance breeding is given. An overview of resistant cultivars of Dresden-Pillnitz and the respective resistant traits is presented. This assortment of cultivars was developed to provide a resistant cultivar for each ripening... |

Soil-borne diseases are one of the most important problems in organic and other ‘low input’ soil-based greenhouse production systems. While chemical soil disinfection has been the method of choice in conventional farming systems, soil steaming has been the main strategy for the control of soil borne diseases in organic production. Both methods are extremely expensive and have been increasingly restricted for environmental reasons by government and organic standard setting bodies respectively. The use of tolerant varieties and of grafting onto resistant rootstocks were evaluated as potential replacements for soil steaming in organic and low input systems and found to be as effective in reducing root disease and increasing root fresh weight, fruit yield and... |

Danish wheat varieties are tested on a set of different Tilletia populations for their level of resistance. Resistance to bunt is studied by inoculating seeds artificially with different populations of bunt before sowing. 5 g of spores per kg of seeds is used, and the ”isolates” used are selected among the 50-60 different populations of bunt collected from different parts of the country. 2-3 different populations are used for inoculation the first year, and varieties showing good resistance are tested further in the following years on 3-6 new populations. The susceptible variety Herzog (up to 86% attack) and the highly resistant variety Stava (normally 0-0.2% attack) are included every year as reference. In July the number of ears with attacks of bunt is... |

This study will aim to establish whether crop varieties require dedicated organic trials or whether advice on their performance under organic conditions can be extrapolated from conventional trial data. A number of varieties from different vegetable types will be selected for their expected suitability for production under organic conditions. Selected varieties will be used in trials examining parameters such as speed of emergence and establishment, total and marketable yields, quality attributes, pest resistance and incidence of disease. The establishment of reliable data with these crops will allow additional advice to be provided to organic growers on the most appropriate variety and husbandry techniques to obtain maximum marketable yield of good... |

Fireblight (Erwinia amylovora) was detected on rootstocks in several apple orchards in Baden-Württemberg. In Germany the mostly used rootstocks on apple ‘M9’ and ‘M26’ are known to be susceptible to fire blight. Therefore the LVWO Weinsberg participated in the “European Cornell-Geneva rootstocks trial” which is a common experiment of seven research institutes over whole Europe. Six fire blight resistant or tolerant root-stocks from the Geneva® breeding program were tested in comparison to ‘M9’ (Type T337 and Pajam 2). The variety was ‘Golden Delicious’ and the trees were planted in 2001 . An outstanding new rootstock was ‘Geneva® 11’. The tree size was similar to ‘M9’ (above 7% more growth in comparison to ‘T337’). Besides that the influence on the fruit... |
