Soil tillage Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli.
The web platform offers a compilation of various formats and materials dealing with reduced tillage and its challenges regarding weeds. A selection of short movies about mechanical weeding, green manure and tailor-made machinery is listed. Leaflets and publications on reduced tillage can be downloaded. In there, different treatments and machinery are tested and compared to advice farmers on how to conserve soil while keeping weed under control. For Swiss farmers information on the legal framework of direct payment and rules for reduced tillage is available. Furthermore, the platform gives inputs about direct seeding, shallow ploughing and other related issues. Swiss pilot farms involved in trials are briefly portrayed. The outcomes and conclusions...

Plusieurs indicateurs...

Properties and functions of organic materials in poor agricultural soil condition Organic Eprints
Usman, Suleiman.
A field experiment was conducted under different soil strata in poor agricultural soil condition. Each soil stratum was treated separately with different organic material for soil fertility management. These organic materials are cow dung, sheep dung, goat dung, donkey dung, rice husks, millet husks, Acacia albida, Acacia nilotica, wood ash, house refuses, and combination of all ‘ani-cro-ber’. In the first assessment, soil structure, texture, colour, consistency, bulk density were determined in the field, while in the second assessment N, P, K, Na, Ca, OC, OM and pH were determined under specific laboratory analysis. It is believed that the use of organic materials in soil management is a good way to improve and maintain soil quality and soil fertility...

Kinetics of microbial phosphorus uptake in cultivated soils Organic Eprints
Oehl, Fritz; Oberson, Astrid; Probst, Mirijam; Fliessbach, Andreas; Roth, Hans-Rudolf; Frossard, Emmanuel.
Knowledge about the role of microorganisms in P cycling at conditions of constant soil respiration rates and constant size of microbially bound P is lacking. To study the kinetics of microbial P uptake and cycling under such conditions, soils differing in biological activity were 33PO4 labelled by introducing a carrier-free tracer solution and incubated for 56 days. The 33PO4 incorporation into the fraction of microbial P releasable by chloroform treatment (Pchl) was assessed and the isotopic composition [=specific activity (SA); SA=33PO4/31PO4] of Pchl and soil solution P compared. Soils were taken from a 20-year-old field experiment including a nonfertilised control (NON), a minerally fertilised conventional (MIN) and two organic farming systems...

Auswirkungen mehrjähriger ökologischer Bewirtschaftung auf ausgewählte Bodeneigenschaften, dargestellt am Beispiel des Versuchsfeldes Gülzow Organic Eprints
Kahle, Petra; Baum, Christel; Borchwardt, Monika.
The effects of ecological vs. conventional farming on several biological, chemical and physical soil properties were investigated at the arable test site Gülzow (Northeast Germany). After ten years of ecological farming increased activities of dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase in the soil were measured. Low effects on the chemical soil properties like content of Corg, Nt and soil organic matter and no significant effects on physical soil properties like density, porosity and water retention were observed. -- (Sprache des Volltextes: Deutsch)

Grassland carbon sequestration and emissions following cultivation in a mixed crop rotation Organic Eprints
Acharya, B.S.; Rasmussen, J.; Eriksen, J..
Grasslands are potential carbon sinks to reduce unprecedented increase in atmospheric CO2. Effect of age (1 to 4-yr-old) and management (slurry, grazing multispecies mixture) of a grass phase mixed crop rotation on carbon sequestration and emissions upon cultivation was compared with 17-yr-old grassland and a pea field as reference. Aboveground and root biomass were determined and soils were incubated to study CO2 emissions after soil disturbance. Aboveground biomass was highest in 1-yr-old grassland with slurry application and lowest in 4-yr-old grassland without slurry application. Root biomass was highest in 4-yr-old grassland, but all 1 to 4-yr-old grasslands were in between the pea field (0.81±0.094 g kg-1 soil) and the 17-yr-old grassland (3.17±0.22...

Nitrogen efficiency in organic farming using a GPS precision farming technique Organic Eprints
Zanen, Marleen; Koopmans, Chris.
In the coming years, agriculture in the Netherlands will be forced to produce more high quality produce with smaller inputs of fertilisers. Organic agriculture should play a leading role and set an example for sustainable soil management. This implies greater nutrient use efficiency and fewer inputs. GPS-controlled precision tillage using the same tracks in the field year after year offers the opportunity to improve soil structure. The tracks become compacted, improving trafficability (Vermeulen & Klooster, 1992). Our hypothesis is that the soil structure of the remaining beds will improve, providing better aeration and rooting for the crop and access to necessary nutrients. This would mean that nutrient use efficiency would improve in GPS-controlled...

Hoyer, U.; Lemnitzer, B.; Hülsbergen, K.-J..
Due to the results of organic matter balancing which showed a very high potential of soil organic matter accumulation in organic farming, a research project was started in spring 2005 with the objective to ascertain this hypothesis. Soil sampling was carried out on different organic and adjacent conventional farms in distinct regions of Ger-many. A comparison of the samples regarding Corg showed only minor differences between organic and conventional farms whereas the more sensitive indicators like Cmic and enzyme activities were more affected. However the main influencing factor of all these indicators in this investigation is soil texture. The cultivation system (inten-sive, extensive, stocking, crop rotation, tillage) is more important than the...

Spontaneous cover crop characterization is relevant to define a sustainable soil management strategy in vineyard Organic Eprints
Metay, Aurélie; Durocher, Eve; Garcia, Léo; Fried, Guillaume; Richarte, Jean; Ohl, Bénédicte; Bouisson, Yvan; Enard, Clément; Metral, Raphaël; Gary, Christian; Kazakou, Elena.
Spontaneous cover cropping is a common practice in Mediterranean vineyards because it is often seen as less competitive and easier to manage than sown covercrops. However, the services provided by the spontaneous flora highly depend on the species, these latter being influenced by the soil management practices. This study analyzes the specific and functional composition of the vineyard flora as influenced by three soil management strategies. To do so, weed cover was sampled at 5 dates during two years after the settlement of the experiment in a vineyard in the South of France. The three soil management treatments were: a control treatment (C) corresponding to a spontaneous cover regularly mowed, a spontaneous cover with organic amendment application each...

Soil functionality assessment in degraded plots of vineyards Organic Eprints
Priori, S.; Lagomarsino, A.; Agnelli, A.E.; Valboa, G.; Castaldini, M.; Pellegrini, S.; Simoni, S.; D'Avino, L.; Gagnarli, E.; Guidi, S.; Goggioli, D.; Landi, S.; D'Errico, G.; Perria, R.; Puccioni, S.; Leprini, M.; Zombardo, A.; Storchi, P.; Costantini, E.A.C..
Land transformation to adapt fields to mechanization in perennial crop farming is a common practice which includes land levelling, deep ploughing, stone-breakage and clearing, application of fertilizers and amendments. Manipulation of the natural soil profile along its entire depth can severely disturb the naturally existing chemical physical, biological and hydrological equilibrium (Costantini and Barbetti, 2008; Costantini et al., 2013). The most common effects of the land transformation are mixing of soil horizons and soil truncation, which result in reduction of soil depth and available water, organic matter depletion, enrichment of calcium carbonate content in the topsoil, imbalance of some element ratio, and decline in the activity and diversity of...

Improving Soil Structure and Nitrogen Use Efficiency by GPS-controlled Precision Tillage Technology in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Zanen, Ir. M.; Koopmans, Dr. Ir. C.J..
A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of tillage technique (GPS-controlled traffic system and traditional tillage) and level of fertilization (farmers’ practice or phosphate equilibrium) on yield, soil structure and nitrogen use efficiency. Manure inputs could be seriously reduced without yields being diminished during the first three years of the intensive crop rotation. Results suggest that an improved soil structure under GPS-controlled precision tillage enhances nitrogen use efficiency.

Farmyard manure, plant based organic fertilisers, inorganic fertiliser - which sustains soil organic matter best? Organic Eprints
Raupp, Joachim; Oltmanns, Meike.
Legume biomass or pulse meal may be considered as alternatives to farmyard manure (FYM) in organic farms with small scale animal husbandry or in stockless organic farms. From 1996 a field trial was established on a poor sandy soil to compare plant based organic fertilisers, FYM and inorganic fertilisers, each applied at 100 kg ha-1 N. Additionally, FYM was tested at a higher rate of 170 kg ha-1 N. Average soil organic carbon content in topsoil (Corg) of the last crop rotation period (2002-05) is compared to that in 1996. Corg remained at the same level of 0.78 % only with FYM, while plant based and inorganic fertiliser decreased carbon contents to 0.74 and 0.72 % Corg, respectively. The higher FYM rate increased Corg up to 0.84 %. Based on these results,...
