Abundance and prevalence of Aphidius avenae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Peñalver-Cruz,Ainara; Ortiz-Martínez,Sebastián; Villegas,Cinthya; Tomanovic,Zeljko; Zepeda-Paulo,Francisca; Zikic,Vladimir; Lavandero,Blas.
Abstract During the samplings described here, Aphidius avenae (=picipes) (Haliday, 1834) was collected. This species has been reported in Chile but has never been studied in terms of its relative abundance and prevalence in central and southern Chile by using classical or molecular methods. The composition of the parasitoid assemblages on several cereal aphid hosts was examined for three seasons in agricultural landscapes. In this note, we describe the prevalence of this parasitoid species in cereal aphids and other aphid hosts and discuss the abundance of this parasitoid compared to other aphid parasitoids and the probable origins of this important aphid parasitoid species in Chile. The results indicate that A. avenae has a low prevalence compared to...

Characterization of resistance expression in genotypes of Solanum Section Lycopersicon against Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Vitta,Nancy; Estay,Patricia; Chorbadjian,Rodrigo A.
N. Vitta, P. Estay, and Chorbadjian, R.A. 2016. Characterization of resistance expression in genotypes of Solanum Section Lycopersicon against Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):366-373. Two studies were conducted with the aim of characterizing the antixenosis and antibiosis resistance expression of genotypes in the Solanum section Lycopersicon against Tuta absoluta (Meyrick). The species used were S. lycopersicum (Fiorentino, Naomi and Belle), S. habrochaites (RCAT030597, PI126446), S. chilense (INIABB79), S. peruvianum (RCAT031296, RCAT039874 and RCAT030403) and S. pimpinellifolium (PI390739). For the antixenosis bioassay, a leaf was removed from plants of each genotype and placed in a cup with a floral foam soaked in water....

In vitro and glasshouse biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani with improved strains of Trichoderma spp. Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Montealegre,Jaime R; Ochoa,Fabián; Besoain,Ximena; Herrera,Rodrigo; Pérez,Luz M.
J.R. Montealegre, F. Ochoa, X. Besoain, R. Herrera, and L.M. Pérez. 2014. In vitro and glasshouse biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani with improved strains of Trichoderma spp. Cien. Inv. Agr. 41(2):197-206. The potential of Trichoderma spp. fusants for the biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani was compared with the ability of their corresponding parental strains. Their effect was tested in vitro using two R. solani strains, 509 (AG 2-1) and 618 (AG 4). The highest inhibitions in growth in dual cultures were obtained with the ThF2-1 (89.79%), ThF3-3 (90.55%), ThF4-15 (91.75%) and ThF5-8 (77.67%) fusants on R. solani 509; only ThF2-1 was able to inhibit the growth of R. solani 618 (60.19%). The inhibitory effect on growth was mainly due to diffusible metabolites....

Performance of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivars in a tropical sheltered production system Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Piñón,Mayte.
Off-season vegetables become expensive so new technological systems are required to grow cultivars well adapted to climatic conditions throughout the year. Accordingly, a trial was performed to test 12 tomato F1 commercial hybrids in a Cuban sheltered installation based on the "umbrella" effect recommended for tropical conditions. The main goal of the trial was to study cultivar productivity and adaptation traits before offering recommendations to growers. The '37242' (7.4 kg plant-1) and 'Setcopa' (7.1 kg ha-1) F1 hybrids showed the highest marketable yields, commercialized at 93% and 87%, respectively. The performance of the '37242' was notable; its high fruit set (87%) during the hot and wet season showed its adaptation to the local conditions. The...

Reduction of incidence and severity of Septoria lycopersici leaf spot of tomato with bacteria and yeasts Ciência Rural
Blum,Luiz Eduardo Bassay.
Septoria leaf spot, caused by Septoria lycopersici, is an important disease of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) which is mainly controlled by fungicide sprays. One of the alternatives to reduce fungicide applications is the use of leaf antagonists such as yeast and bacterium. This study was conducted from 1994 through 1995 in Auburn, AL, USA. The pathogen and one antagonist were isolated from field plants. In greenhouse, six yeast and one bacterial isolates were tested, in a set of seven experiments. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four to eight treatments and six replications. The antagonists (1-3 × 10(8) colony forming units ml-1) were inoculated 48h before the inoculation of the pathogen (1-2 × 10(5) conidia ml-1),...

Intensity of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae) attacks on Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. Leaves Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Leite,Germano Leão Demolin; Picanço,Marcelo; Jham,Gulab Newandran; Marquini,Flávio.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of height of leaves in the canopy of plants, leaf organic compounds, concentrations of leaf nitrogen and potassium, leaf trichomes and cristalliferous idioblasts densities on the attack intensity of three tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Santa Clara) crops by Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae), under field conditions. The experimental design was arranged in randomized blocks, with three replications, each being one tomato crop. Analysis of variance and the Tukey’s multiple range test (5% significance) were used to test the effect of canopy height, trichome and cristalliferous idioblasts densities on the number of mines produced by T....
