Does high stereotypic behavior expression affect productivity measures in sows? R. Bras. Zootec.
Tatemoto,Patricia; Bernardino,Thiago; Rodrigues,Frederico Augusto Mazzocca Lopes; Zanella,Adroaldo José.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of stereotypic behavior on productivity measures in sows. Frequent expression of stereotypies by pigs has been reported, even when pigs are not maintained in crates. This behavior is only observed in animals kept in captivity and is a wide-range welfare indicator, since it is considered to develop in situations of chronic stress or frustration. When comparing groups of sows showing low or high frequency of stereotypy expression, we found that stereotypic behavior did not affect productivity. Moreover, it did not affect physiological welfare indicators, such as salivary cortisol concentration or glucocorticoids in the placenta. There were no differences in productivity parameters, including...

Garcia,Javier Alexander Bethancourt; Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Vaz,Fabiano Nunes; Restle,João; Mendonça,Fábio Souza.
ABSTRACT The incidence of bruising in bovine carcases is a consequence of several potentially stressful and aggressive factors to which the animals are subjected during pre-slaughter handling. The aim of this study was to identify pre-slaughter factors associated with the severe bruising in different regions of the bovine carcass. The study evaluated 5,028 batches of slaughtered cattle from 154,100 animals. The carcases were analysed for gender, handling on the farm, condition of farm infrastructure, type of truck, distance and journey time from the farm to the slaughterhouse, loading density and time of year in which the animals were slaughtered. The results showed that the sidecut and forequarter are the areas most affected by bruising, with females...

Pizzutto, Cristiane Schilbach; Scarpelli, Karime Cury; Rossi, Alexandre Pongracz; Chiozzotto, Evelyn Nestori; Leschonski, Claudia.
To provide and to measure welfare of animals in captivity is a great challenge for professionals in this fi eld. Having to adapt to a diversity of stressor stimuli may bring with it important biological expenses for the clinical, physiological and behavioral aspects of these animals. Environmental enrichment is an important tool in the search for species-typical behaviors, better quality of life and the desirable welfare.

Assessing locomotion deficiency in broiler chicken Scientia Agricola
Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Paz,Ibiara Correia de Lima Almeida; Baracho,Marta dos Santos; Menezes,Adriana Gomes de; Lima,Karla Andrea Oliveira de; Bueno,Leda Gobbo de Freitas; Mollo Neto,Mario; Carvalho,Victor Ciaco de; Almeida,Ianê Correia de Lima; Souza,Anderson Luiz de.
Locomotion deficiencies in broiler production cause poor welfare and lead to change in drinking and feeding behavior with consequent loss in weight gain. This research aimed to assess locomotion deficiencies in broiler chicken by analyzing the vertical peak force on both feet during walk. A chamber was built with an inlet ramp, a horizontal walkway in the middle and an outlet ramp. In the walkway a thin mat with piezoelectric crystal sensors was placed to record the step vertical peak force of the feet while walking on the force platform. The measurement system consisted of a mat with electronic sensors and software that allowed real time recording of the forces and the processing and analysis of data. Footage was taken from two digital video cameras and...

Practicability of somatic cell count and electrical conductivity as subclinical mastitis diagnostic tests in camels (Camelus dromedarius) Scientia Agricola
Aljumaah,Riyadh Saleh; Almutairi,Fares; Ayadi,Moez; Alshaikh,Mohammed Abdulrahman; Al-Haidary,Ahmed Abrahim; Samara,Emad Mohammed.
ABSTRACT Critical gaps exist in our understanding of the diagnostic reliability of subclinical mastitis tests in dromedary camels. Using a retrospective longitudinal cross-sectional approach, 191 lactating camels were randomly sampled from 47 camel herds to investigate at first the practicability of somatic cell count (SCC) and electrical conductivity (EC) tests as subclinical mastitis tests in camels through their validations by California mastitis test (CMT) score, and then through the subsequent employments of those objective means in assessing certain potential risk markers predisposing camels to this disease. Results indicate the reliability and validity of SCC test, in contrast to EC test, in distinguishing subclinical mastitic udders in camels, as...

Positioning of sensors for control of ventilation systems in broiler houses: a case study Scientia Agricola
Curi,Thayla Morandi Ridolfi de Carvalho; Conti,Dante; Vercellino,Rimena do Amaral; Massari,Juliana Maria; Moura,Daniella Jorge de; Souza,Zigomar Menezes de; Montanari,Rafael.
ABSTRACT Ventilation systems are incorporated at intensive poultry farms to control environment conditions and thermal comfort of broilers. The ventilation system operates based on environmental data, particularly measured by sensors of temperature and relative humidity. Sensors are placed at different positions of the facility. Quality, number and positioning of the sensors are critical factors to achieve an efficient performance of the system. For this reason, a strategic positioning of the sensors associated to controllers could support the maintenance and management of the microclimate inside the facility. This research aims to identify the three most representative points for the positioning of sensors in order to support the ventilation system during...

Performance, carcass characteristics and litter moisture in broilers housed at two densities Animal Sciences
Gopinger, Edenilse; Avila, Valdir Silveira de; Perondi, Dani; Catalan, Aiane Aparecida da Silva; Krabbe, Everton Luis; Roll, Victor Fernando Büttow.
The effect of stocking density in broiler chickens (11.08 and 13.20 birds m-2), between 5 and 45 days of age, was assessed with regard to performance, cut yield, litter moisture and frequency of pododermatitis injuries. Further, 476 one-day chicks Cobb 500® were distributed in a completely randomized design at two densities (birds m-²), with seven replications per treatment in 14 experimental units. Birds housed at a lower density (11.08) increased feed intake (p < 0.05), without any effect on weight gain and feed conversion. Retail yields were not influenced (p > 0.05) by treatments. In the case of higher density (3.20)the litter showed higher moisture content (p < 0.05) at 28 and 35 days of age. There was a higher occurrence of pododermatitis in...

Defining upper critical temperatures for an effective climate control to reduce heat stress CIGR Journal
Sanz, Salvador Calvet.
The definition of homeotherm animal responses to temperature has traditionally based on metabolic and thermal physiology studies. The thermoneutral zone is defined as the range of ambient temperature within which metabolic rate is at a minimum, and within which temperature regulation is achieved by non-evaporative physical processes alone. As temperature raises, animals the upper critical temperature is reached, which is the ambient temperature above which thermoregulatory evaporative heat loss processes of a resting thermoregulating animal are recruited. These temperatures depend on a variety of factors including animal species and breed, age, adaptation or animal status, among others. These are influenced by other environmental conditions such as...
