Biochemical and morphological aspects of salivary glands of the predator Brontocoris tabidus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) BABT
Azevedo,Dihego de Oliveira; Zanuncio,José Cola; Zanuncio Jr.,José Salazar; Martins,Gustavo Ferreira; Marques-Silva,Solange; Sossai,Marcos Franklin; Serrão,José Eduardo.
The aim of this work was to study the feeding habits of the predator Brontocoris tabidus (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) analyzing the salivary gland complex (SGC). The SGC was dissected and subjected to histological analyses and biochemical assays. Results showed that a pair of bilobed principal salivary glands and one pair of tubular accessory salivary glands form the SGC and different parts of salivary gland synthesizes similar substances. Lipases, a-amylase and trypsin-like enzymes were detected at both lobes of the principal salivary gland. These data together with observations related to the predator's diet suggested that it could be considered an obligate zoophytophagous.

Araújo,Karine Lourenzone; Rezende,Lucas Cunha Dias de; Souza,Letícia Soncini; Daltoé,Renata Dalmaschio; Madeira,Klesia Pirola; Paes,Marcela Ferreira; Herkenhoff,Fernando Luiz; Rangel,Letícia Batista Azevedo; Silva,Ian Victor.
The aim of this work was to study the estrogen receptor alpha (ERS1) PvuII and XbaI gene polymorphisms prevalence in randomly selected women population from Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states in Brazil by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment lengths polymorphism (PCR_RFLP) methodology. It was shown that Rio de Janeiro women exhibited a significantly different prevalence of XbaI polymorphism comparing to Espirito Santo women. Nonetheless, similar prevalence of PvuII polymorphism was found in both women´s populations. Moreover, a strong linkage disequilibrium was observed between these SNPs reinforcing the hypothesis of differential pattern of inheritance observed on such populations.

Influence of high osmotic pressure on sorbitol production by Zymomonas mobilis BABT
Vignoli,Josiane Alessandra; Cazetta,Marcia Luciana; Silva,Rui Sérgio Santos; Celligoi,Maria Antonia Pedrine Colabone.
The objective of the present work was to study the variation on the sorbitol production in relation to the concentration of sugars, (metabolizable or not) and the cultivation time. A full factorial design was used considering the factors such as sucrose and maltose concentration and cultivation time. The addition of sugars caused increases on the sorbitol production up to the concentration of 300g/L however, decreases on the sorbitol production were observed when the concentration reached values above this. Increasing the time of fermentation was statistically significant to sorbitol production, however, little increase the production was noticed after 36h.

Improved purification process of β- and α-trypsin isoforms by ion-exchange chromatography BABT
Santos,Alexandre Martins Costa; Oliveira,Jamil Silvano de; Bittar,Eustáquio Resende; Silva,Anderson Lourenço da; Guia,Marcos Luiz dos Mares; Bemquerer,Marcelo Porto; Santoro,Marcelo Matos.
The purpose of this work was to improve the separation and yield of pure β- and α-trypsin isoforms by ion-exchange chromatography and to characterize some physical-chemical properties of these isoforms. Purification of trypsin isoforms was performed by ion-exchange chromatography in 0.1 mol/L tris-HC buffer, pH 7.10 at 4ºC. The sample loading, salt concentration, flow rate and pH of mobile phase were varied to determine their effects on the resolution of the separation. The resolution was optimized mainly between β- and α-trypsin. Pure isoforms were obtained by chromatographying 100 mg of commercial trypsin during seven days, yielding 51 mg of high purity β-trypsin and 13 mg of α-trypsin partially pure, with small amounts of contaminating of ψ-trypsin....

The genus Enterococcus as probiotic: safety concerns BABT
Araújo,Tatiane Ferreira; Ferreira,Célia Lúcia de Luces Fortes.
Species from the genus Enterococcus have been used as probiotic for humans or animals, although this genus is not considered "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS). While enterococci are considered "positive" in food technology, isolates of this genus have emerged as opportunistic pathogens for the humans. The aim of this review is to summarize the characteristics that can determine the use of this genus as probiotics. According to the guidelines used to define the genus Enterococcus strains as probiotic a case-by-case evaluation of each potential technological strain is presented and research perspectives for using enterococci as probiotic is also discussed.

Infection imaging with radiopharmaceuticals in the 21st century BABT
Das,Satya S.; Hall,Anne V.; Wareham,David W.; Britton,Keith E..
Infection continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Nuclear medicine has an important role in aiding the diagnosis of particularly deep-seated infections such as abscesses, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, and infections of prosthetic devices. Established techniques such as radiolabelled leucocytes are sensitive and specific for inflammation but do not distinguish between infective and non-infective inflammation. The challenge for Nuclear medicine in infection imaging in the 21st century is to build on the recent trend towards the development of more infection specific radiopharmaceuticals, such as radiolabelled anti-infectives (e.g. 99mTc- ciprofloxacin). In addition to aiding early diagnosis of infection, through...

Radionuclide imaging of infection: what the future holds BABT
Palestro,Christopher J..
Nuclear Medicine plays an important role in the evaluation of patients suspected of harboring infection. Gallium imaging is especially useful for opportunistic infections and spinal osteomyelitis. In vitro labeled leukocyte imaging is the current radionuclide gold standard for imaging most infections, in immunocompetent patients, including cardiovascular, postoperative, and musculoskeletal infections (except spinal osteomyelitis). Several in-vivo leukocyte labeling methods have been investigated, but none are widely used. Results obtained with radiolabeled antibiotics have been disappointing. Data on FDG are still emerging, but this agent appears to be especially valuable in fever of unknown origin, spinal osteomyelitis, vasculitis and sarcoidosis. It is...

Effect of inoculation associated to leaf sprayed Co+Mo on the yield and grain nutrients in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) BABT
Berton Junior,João Francisco; Santos,Julio Cesar Pires; Coelho,Cileide Maria Medeiros; Klauberg Filho,Osmar.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of nitrogen fixing inoculum associated with Co + Mo leaf spray on the common bean grain yield and grain nutrients, cv. FT Nobre. Three dosages of the inoculant (0, 200 and 400 g/50 kg seeds), combined with four Co + Mo leaf spray levels (T0=0,0; T1=4.9,49; T2=7.3,73; and T3=9.7,97 g ha-1 of Co and Mo, respectively) were tested. The grain yield with the use of the inoculant (400 g / 5O kg seed-1) associated with the higher level of Co+Mo (T2 and T3) was very similar to the mineral nitrogen condition fertilizer recommended for the bean (70 kg ha-1 of N). With the increased inoculant dosage, an increase of the protein content and of P and Mg in the grain was also observed. The results indicated that...

The Mutagenic Potential Caused by the Emissions from Combustion of Crude Glycerin and Diesel Fuel BABT
Mazak,Daniel Terruggi; Ávila,Ivonete; Crnkovic,Paula Manoel; Cordoba,Aymer Yeferson Maturana; Pagliuso,Josmar Davilson.
This study evaluated the use of crude glycerin as an alternative of energy generation to replace the traditional fuels. The Tradescantia stamen hair mutation assay (Trad-SH) was applied to study the mutagenic effects caused by the emissions generated in the direct combustion of diesel oil and glycerin in a flame tube furnace. Tradescantia inflorescences were exposed to gaseous emissions from the combustion tests in a fumigation chamber for 30-40 min. The analysis of variance and the Tukey test were applied to compare the differences between six test groups (intoxicated with emissions from glycerin and diesel oil combustion) and a control group. Only one glycerin group showed statistical differences (0.05), possibly due to the complexity of the burning...

Morphogenetic response of cotyledon and leaf explants of melon (Cucumis melo L.) cv. Amarillo Oro BABT
Souza,Fernanda Vidigal Duarte; Garcia-Sogo,Begoña; Souza,Antonio da Silva; San-Juán,Amparo Pérez; Moreno,Vicente.
Callus cultures from cotyledon and leaf explants of a Spanish cultivar of melon (Amarillo Oro) were tested for growth and morphogenic capacity on several culture media with different concentrations of IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) in combination with 1.0 mg.L-1 BA (6-benzylaminopurine) or 6.0 mg.L-1 KIN (kinetin). The best results were achieved with cotyledon explants. The leaf explants presented low bud formation capacity. Variability of organogenic response on cotyledons of different age (7, 5, 3 and 1-day-old) was evaluated. The age of explant had a significant influence on bud induction. Cotyledon explants from 7-day-old seedlings showed higher organogenic index and development of shoots when cultured onto MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg.L-1 of IAA and...

The effect of concanavalin A on the replication of rotavirus (SA-11) in cell culture BABT
Hasenack,Beatriz S.; Botelho,Maria Valéria J.; Lauretti,Flávio; Melo,Fernando L. de; Orlandi,Janaina M.; Linhares,Rosa Elisa C.; Ueda,Marli; Nozawa,Carlos M..
Rotavirus (RV) strain SA-11 was studied with respect to its infectivity in MA-104 cell cultures and the effect of concanavalin A (ConA). Receptors for ConA at the surface of MA-104 cell were determined by fluorescence assay and specifically inhibited by D-mannose. The kinetics of virus growth was carried out by plaque assay. Electron microscopy and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were used for monitoring the experiments. It was concluded that RV replication was not affected consistently by ConA, however it interfered with the development of cytopathic effect (CPE) without altering virus yields.

Current evaluation of the clinical utility of Fluoromethylcholine-(18F) PET/CT in Prostate Cancer BABT
Talbot,Jean-Nöel; Chevalme,Yanna-Marina.
This short review is dedicated to the current status of the assessment of a new PET radiopharmaceutical, fluoromethylcholine-(18F) or FCH, which is taken-up by prostate cancer tissue, in contrary to fluorodeoxyglucose-(18F) or FDG. It seems that FCH could become "the FDG of prostate cancer", with the same type of achievements (detection of distant metastases and of occult recurrences, restaging prior to invasive treatments), and the same drawbacks (false negative results in case of small lesions, in particular lymph nodes metastases, and false positive results in case of infection/inflammation, in particular prostatitis). Current evidence is summarised and discussed for each of the potential settings of FCH PET/CT imaging in prostate cancer. The...
