Supply Chain Issues in China’s Milk Adulteration Incident AgEcon
Gale, H. Frederick, Jr.; Hu, Dinghuan.
China’s melamine milk adulteration crisis highlights the challenges that arise as large well-capitalized companies procure raw materials from a diffused supply chain of scattered small farmers and milk collection stations. As milk prices climbed sharply in 2007 and companies branched out into new territories, intense competition for raw milk supplies strengthened incentives to water down and adulterate milk. Effective food safety measures must account for incentives, the distribution of market power in the supply chain and market dynamics.

Yu, Xiaohua; Abler, David G.; Zeng, Yinchu.
Using a survey data of 700 traders, this study scrutinizes contract choices and enforcement for agricultural traders in China. This study finds that market service and environment are very important for both contract choices and enforcement. Better market service and environment can increase the propensity of using contract and the probability of contract enforcement both for purchase and sales of products. Education and memberships of special associations are also important for contract choices and enforcement. Higher education and affiliation to special associations for traders can increase the propensity of contracts and reduce contract breaches. However, the formats of contracts, whether contracts are oral or written, are not important for contract...

CHINA'S FOOD AND AGRICULTURE: ISSUES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY AgEcon
China's impact on world agricultural markets in coming decades will depend on many factors. Growing income and transition to modern urban lifestyles will increase demand for all foods, but demand will shift toward meat and high-value products. An understanding of geographic variations of consumption, production, trade, and policy is critical to understanding the vast China market. Development of transportation infrastructure and market channels will make it easier for food products to reach consumers. China's approach to biotechnology and its reform of institutions for allocating land, labor, and water inputs have important implications for agricultural productive...

Prediction and Analysis of Chinese Rural Households’ Consumption Level Based on the ARIMA Model AgEcon
Yan, Jian-biao; Li, Qiang.
By using the software SAS9.2 and the relevant data of consumption level of rural residents in China from 1952 to 2008, the ARIMA model is established. The model is used to analyze and forecast the time series of the consumption level of Chinese rural residents. The results show that in the near future period of time, the consumption level of Chinese rural residents will be further increased. In 2012, the level will break through per capital 5 000 yuan, almost 100 times more than that in the primary time period. But consumption level does not equal to living standard. To let farmers lead a good life, the government should follow the objective laws, take the overall situation into consideration; coordinate the relations among farmers’ consumption level,...

Livestock in China: Commodity specific total factor productivity decomposition using new panel data AgEcon
Rae, Allan N.; Ma, Hengyun; Huang, Jikun; Rozelle, Scott.
Studies of total factor productivity in livestock production are rare, but when available provide useful information especially in the context of developing countries such as China where livestock is becoming more important in the domestic agricultural economy. We estimate total factor productivity (TFP) for four major livestock products in China employing the stochastic frontier approach, and decompose productivity growth into its technical efficiency and technical progress components. Efforts are made to adjust and augment the available livestock statistics. The results show that growth in TFP and its components varied between the 1980s and the 1990s as well as over production structures. While there is evidence of considerable technical innovation in...

Competition between the U.S. and West Africa in International Cotton Trade: A Focus on Import Demand in China AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; McPhail, Lihong Lu; Kiawu, James.
We estimate the demand for imported cotton in China and assess the competitiveness of cotton-exporting countries. Given the assertion that African cotton producers are ill affected by U.S. cotton subsidies, our focus is the price competition between the C4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) and United States in China. Demand estimates are used to project how U.S. prices affect China’s imports by country. In comparing demand projections, results show that the relationship between the United States and the C4 has more to do with how U.S. prices can affect global prices rather than any substitute or competitive relationship in the Chinese market.
