Multiple Criteria Decision Making: Method Selection And Application To Three Contrasting Agricultural Case Studies AgEcon
Dooley, A.E.; Sheath, Gavin W.; Smeaton, D..
Agribusiness, farm business and agricultural-environmental decisions which varied in their characteristics were used to evaluate multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) in an agricultural context. This paper discusses differences between the case studies, strengths and weaknesses of the methods used, and the success of the MCDM process based on participants’ expectations and experiences. While MCDM can help identify the best decision, the main benefits identified in using MCDM included better understanding of their own and other’s perspectives, a means to explain the decision and a structured way to work through the decision process. Key problem areas identified included time limitations, understanding and ownership.

Representative Farms Economic Outlook for the January 2007 FAPRI/AFPC Baseline AgEcon
Richardson, James W.; Outlaw, Joe L.; Knapek, George M.; Raulston, J. Marc; Herbst, Brian K.; Fumasi, Roland J.; Anderson, David P.; Klose, Steven L..
The farm level economic impacts of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 on representative crop and livestock operations are projected in this report. The analysis was conducted over the 2005-2012 planning horizon using FLIPSIM, AFPC’s whole farm simulation model. Data to simulate farming operations in the nation’s major production regions came from two sources: • Producer panel cooperation to develop economic information to describe and simulate representative crop, livestock, and dairy farms, and • Projected prices, policy variables, and input inflation rates from the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) January 2007 Baseline. The FLIPSIM policy simulation model incorporates the historical risk faced by farmers for prices...

THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE RED IMPORT FIRE ANT ON THE HOMESCAPE, LANDSCAPE, AND THE URBANSCAPE OF SELECTED METROPLEXES OF TEXAS AgEcon
Lard, Curtis F.; Hall, Charles R.; Salin, Victoria.
The imported fire ant has become a major economic pest to various sectors of the Texas economy. In order to determine the economic impact of this pest on selected urban areas, an economic study was conducted in 1998-1999 in the 5 metroplexes of Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston to estimate the costs of controlling and managing fire ants. The main purpose of this study was to estimate the annual economic impact of the fire ant on the households, schools, cities, and golf courses for the aforementioned metroplexes. Other sectors within the urban areas are affected but this study shows the major impacted sectors that interfere with the human activities in living areas, work areas and recreational areas. Annual expenditures for the...

Greenhouse Gas Impacts of Ethanol from Iowa Corn AgEcon
Feng, Hongli; Rubin, Ofir D.; Babcock, Bruce A..
As the United States begins to move towards putting an economic value on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the need for improved accounting standards becomes acute. Lifecycle analysis (LCA), which involves the systematic collection and interpretation of material flow in all relevant processes of a product, has become the accepted procedure to use to determine greenhouse gas emissions of products ranging from transportation fuels, to building materials, to food production (Farrell et al., 2006; Hill et al., 2006; Owen, 2004). The basic motivation of LCA is that, to conduct a fair assessment of the environmental impacts of a product, it is necessary to take into account all of the processes throughout the product’s lifespan, including the extraction...

ETHANOL'S IMPACT ON THE U.S. CORN INDUSTRY AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Mattson, Jeremy W.; Andino, Jose; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the U.S. corn sector, especially changes in ethanol production. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural polices, weather conditions, and technological change. Changes in ethanol production will impact the production, feed use, and exports of corn, as well as the general price level. Federally mandated ethanol usage dictates the growth of ethanol production in the United States. Other factors have limited impact on corn price.

Economic Implications of the Methyl Bromide Phaseout AgEcon
Osteen, Craig D..
The pesticide methyl bromide is being phased out internationally under the Montreal Protocol. Methyl bromide has been used for over 50 years to control insect, nematodes, pathogens, and weeds. It is used for soil fumigation before planting many fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, and agricultural nurseries; for post-harvest fumigation of commodities in storage and prior to shipment; and for government-required quarantine treatment to prevent the spread of regulated exotic pests. Many U.S. users are concerned that existing alternatives to methyl bromide will be less effective and cause financial losses. To help mitigate the impacts of the phaseout, USDA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), universities, and private firms are working to develop new...

Whole Truth in Herbicide Labelling AgEcon
Nordblom, Thomas L.; Medd, Richard W..
The 1999 National Competition Policy Review of Ag & Vet Chemical legislation recommended, inter alia, that registrants no longer be required to prove ‘APPROPRIATE’ levels of efficacy of their products but only that the claims on product labels be ‘TRUE’. ‘Appropriate’ efficacy standards amount to market regulation, limiting economic competition from formulations with lower efficacies. Cheaper formulations with lower efficacies are excluded from the marketplace by such standards. Unanswered is the question of what ‘TRUTH’ on a label means in practical terms. Flexibility in dose rates and guidance with usage information is not always well-stated on herbicide labels. There is considerable evidence that efficacy of herbicide varies with dose and with...

Economic Outlook for Representative Cotton Farms Given the August 2005 FAPRI/AFPC Baseline AgEcon
Outlaw, Joe L.; Richardson, James W.; Raulston, J. Marc; Knapek, George M.; Feldman, Paul A..
The Agricultural and Food Policy Center (AFPC) at Texas A&M University develops and maintains data to simulate eighteen representative cotton operations in major production areas of seven states. The chief purpose of this analysis is to project those farms’ economic viability for 2005 through 2009. The data necessary to simulate the economic activity of these operations is developed through ongoing cooperation with panels of agricultural producers in each of these states. The Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) provided projected prices, policy variables, and input inflation rates in their August 2005 Baseline. Under the August 2005 Baseline, only the moderately sized Tennessee cotton farm (TNC1900) and Louisiana cotton farm...

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FARM SIZE AND THE TECHNICAL INEFFICIENCY OF PRODUCTION OF WHEAT FARMERS IN THE EASTERN FREE STATE AgEcon
van Zyl, Johan; Thirtle, Colin G..
Some comments are required to put in perspective the results obtained by Ngwenya, Battese and Fleming (1997). In particular, it is necessary to examine their main conclusion that in 1988/89 there was a significant inverse relationship between the technical inefficiency of wheat farmers in the Eastern Free State and farm size, because this is in direct contrast with the findings of Van Zyl, Binswanger and Thirtle (1995) who used the same dataset.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND OF MILLET AND SORGHUM IN SENEGAL AgEcon
Niane, Amadou D..
The history of starvation in the world is very tightly linked with the history of humanity. The problem of starvation was discussed in 1945 at the Worldwide Constitutional Conference of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The main goal of the organization was and remains a food policy for the benefit of all, in order to liberate all people from starvation. Since 1950, there has been a notable decrease in agricultural production per capita in the developing counties in comparison to the needs. In 1972 and 1973, poor harvests created a dramatic situation in many regions of the world and once again it was in the developing countries where people suffered the most. In the Sahel countries, many thousand of lives would have been lost...

A COMPARATIVE STATIC ANALYSIS OF OKLAHOMA'S VEGETABLE INDUSTRY AgEcon
Henneberry, Shida Rastegari; Schatzer, Raymond Joe; El Beheisi, Yousif.
The impact of hypothetical changes in yields, costs, and demand that might result from the organization of Oklahoma vegetable growers into cooperatives or other multifarmer marketing associations is estimated using a sector programming model. A comparative static analysis is used to evaluate the impact of these changes on planted acreage, growers' revenues, and consumers' and producers' surplus. The results of this analysis indicate that changes in demand are most effective in increasing revenues for Oklahoma growers.

Diffusion of Bt Cotton in India: Impact of Seed Prices and Technological Development AgEcon
Arora, Anchal; Bansal, Sangeeta.
Recent studies in the literature examining impact of government seed price intervention on adoption of Bt cotton get different results depending on the specifics of the situation analyzed. According to one study, reduction in seed prices enables farmers to buy seeds at lower prices and this can result in surge of area sown under Bt cotton. The other view holds that seed price interventions have little impact on the adoption rates rather these interventions may adversely affect firms’ incentives to innovate. Which of the two views characterize adoption of Bt cotton in India? Using three variations of dynamic logistic model, this paper analyzes the impact of certain economic factors like seed prices, technological development, and cotton prices on the...
