Organic Eprints
Barzotto, Ionete Lúcia Milani; Alves, Luis Francisco Angeli.

Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.

Identification of key factors for reducing N and P leaching from organic crop rotations Organic Eprints
Neumann, Angelika; Torstensson, Gunnar; Aronsson, Helena.
Leaching of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) for different 6-year organic crop rotations was examined in separately tile-drained field plots on two different sites in southwest Sweden. On each site, two different farming systems, one with dairy cows and one without stock, were evaluated to identify parts of the crop rotations with the greatest risks of N and P leaching and to examine the scope for improvement. Although organic farming methods themselves already led to a reduction in nutrient leaching, critical periods in the crop rotation could nevertheless be identified for the two soil types. While P leaching is of major importance on clay soils, sandy soils are strongly susceptible to N leaching. From the present study it could be concluded, that key...

The increasing demand for bioenergy and the combination of agricultural production with conservation has made agroforestry to a sustainable land-management option. Aboveground woody biomass plays a decisive role considering the economic value of the agroforestry systems as well as the carbon storage. With the objective to study aboveground woody biomass production of agroforestry systems with different cultivation methods (organic/ integrated), short rotation plantations of different tree species were established 2009 and coppiced in 2012. The studied tree species were black alder (Alnus glutinosa), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), poplar “Max 3”, (Populus maximowiczii x Populus nigra) and willow “Inger” (Salix triandra x Salix viminalis). At the end...

Potential Risk of Acrylamide Formation in Different Cultivars of Amaranth and Quinoa Organic Eprints
Graeff, S.; Stockmann, F.; Weber, A.; Berhane, B; Mbeng, K.J.; Rohitrattana, R.; Salazar, P.; Shoko, P.; Kaul, H.-P.; Claupein, W..
Acrylamide (AA), a potential human carcinogen, is formed in strongly heated carbohydrate-rich food as a part of the Maillard-reaction. The amino acid asparagine (Asn) and reducing sugars are considered to be the main precursors for AA formation. So far, research in AA has mainly focused on potato and cereal products, indicating the relevance of species, cultivars, amount of N fertilizer, and climatic conditions. Potential additional sources of acrylamide in food products might be pseudocereal grains (e.g. amaranth, quinoa). As amaranth and quinoa are often cultivated as cash crops in organic production systems, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential of acrylamide formation in different amaranth and quinoa cultivars. Grain samples were...

Effect of grass mulch application on tubers size and yield of ware potatoes in organic farming Organic Eprints
Dvorak, Petr; Hamouz, Karel; Kuchtová, Perla; Tomasek, Jaroslav.
The aim of this experiment was to evaluate influence of mulching on the tuber yield and on the number of ware potatoes. In organic farming grass mulch for potatoes was used in 2008. For the experiments different ways of mulching (grass mulch after planting, grass mulch after second hoeing) were used and compared with bare soil (control variant). The results showed that grass mulching had positive effect on the yield of ware potatoes and some of the yield-forming components. The yield of ware potatoes was significantly higher by 9.3 t/ha in comparison with control variant. The highest number of ware potatoes was found out in the variant with grass mulch after planting.

Phosphorus mobilization in low-P arable soils may involve soil organic C depletion Organic Eprints
Romanyà, Joan; Blanco-Moreno, José Manuel; Sans, F. Xavier.
Organic farming systems often show negative nutrient balances that may compromise the availability of phosphorus over the mid-term. Calcareous soils with low organic matter generally show low or very low phosphorus availability. Under these conditions, P retained in soil organo-mineral complexes -either in organic or inorganic forms-after its solubilization and -in the case of organic P compounds-subsequent mineralization may be a source of P to plants and soil organisms. By studying the changes in soil retained and soluble P pooloccurring during the growth of two legumes in two scenarios of contrasting P availability we aimed to describe the release of soil retained P, organic and inorganic, into the soluble pools and to relate it to changes in organic C...

Biofortification of food chain with selenium Organic Eprints
Seppänen, Mervi; Kontturi, Juha; Hartikainen, Helinä.
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals which is circulated to food chain via crop plants. Agronomic biofortification with Se is used in areas where the soil Se content is low and Se deficiency causes health problems. Brassica species are efficient in accumulation of soil Se and therefore an attractive choice of species for biofortification. Se uptake and translocation was studied in B. rapa and B. napus in field experiments applied with 0, 6 or 20 mg Se ha-1 as Na2SeO4 and foliar sprays of 30 mg Se ha-1 as Na2SeO4 or Na2SeO3. In addition, a HPLC-ICP-MS based method to identify and quantify organic Se-compounds in seeds and meals was developed. High concentration of Se accumulated in seeds (1.89 μg g-1) and after oil...
