FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF SMALL FOOD MANUFACTURING AND RETAILING BUSINESSES AgEcon
Gustafson, Cole R..
The 1998 Survey of Small Business Finances provides robust information on the financing of small businesses including an overview of their firm's organization, financial characteristics, and credit use. Information from the survey is used in this study to compare the financial characteristics of food manufacturing and retailing small businesses. On average, both food manufacturing and food retailing small businesses had positive financial characteristics. Although they were only marginally profitable and liquid, they were highly solvent. Accounts receivable and inventory comprise nearly half of food manufacturers' total assets and a third of food retailers' assets. By most financial measures, food retailers were statistically smaller than food...

Science in Sanitary and Phytosanitary Dispute Resolution AgEcon
Powell, Mark R..
The World Trade Organization Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS Agreement) relies heavily on science and expert organizations to avoid and resolve trade disputes over measures enacted under the rationale of food safety or plant and animal health protection. However, the state of science for sanitary and phytosanitary risk analysis is highly uncertain, and the SPS Agreement leaves many science policy issues unsettled. The international agencies charged under the SPS Agreement with harmonizing standards and forging international scientific consensus face a daunting and politically-charged task. Two case studies are briefly developed. In the first case, the international scientific consensus strongly supports the U.S. challenge of the European Union's...

KONSEQUENZEN DER WELTWEIT ZUNEHMENDEN VERBREITUNG GENTECHNISCH VERÄNDERTER PFLANZEN IN DER LEBENS- UND FUTTERMITTELPRODUKTION IN DEUTSCHLAND AgEcon
Hirzinger, Tobias; Menrad, Klaus.

The Asymmetric Effect of Dietary Knowledge on Nutrient Intake In China: Implications for Dietary Education Programs AgEcon
Shimokawa, Satoru.
This paper demonstrates that dietary knowledge can influence nutrient intake differently depending on whether expected food availability is increasing or decreasing. Using data from China, we find that overall dietary knowledge has larger and more statistically significant effects on total calorie intake and the intake of three macro nutrients (carbohydrate, fat, and protein) when expected food availability increases than when it decreases. Without distinguishing the direction of changes in expected food availability, most of the corresponding effects become smaller and statistically insignificant. Thus, the effect of dietary knowledge on nutrient intake might have been underestimated in previous studies. We discuss the implications of these findings for...

Process versus product: which determines consumer demand for genetically modified apples? AgEcon
Kaye-Blake, William; Bicknell, Kathryn; Saunders, Caroline M..
One debate in the literature regarding consumers’ reactions to genetically modified food (GMF) centres on whether consumers react to the process of gene technology or to the specific GMF products. Results from a choice experiment survey in New Zealand indicate that consumers are heterogeneous with regard to GMF and that some modifications are viewed more positively than others. These findings suggest that for some consumers the process of gene technology is the decisive factor in evaluatingGMF, while for others the different potential GMF products are valued according to their enhanced attributes.

Discovering and Promoting Commodity Health Attributes: Programs and Issues AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F..
There is a growing consumer segment demanding healthy foods and diets, health and nutrition messages can expand food demand, and governments in the U.S. and EU, faced with increasing obesity and associated health outcomes, want consumers to have reliable information to choose healthy diets. California commodity organizations, charged with expanding the demand for almonds, avocados, strawberries and walnuts, are funding health and nutrition research as a means to discover a unique selling proposition for each product. Research and promotion effects are attracting interest by other commodity groups. Policy and regulatory issues abound.

Comparing Consumer Attitudes towards Genetically Modified Food in Europe AgEcon
Springer, A.; Mattas, Konstadinos; Papastefanou, G.; Tsioumanis, Asterios.
As biotechnology evolves new methods of genetic engineering are now being applied to the production and processing of foods. This paper is trying to explore the attitudes of the European consumers towards genetic modification of food. Using survey data of the EU member countries the proposed research paper is planned to have a threefold output: 1) providing a comparative ranking of the EU member countries in relation to the prevalence of rejection of genetically modified food, 2) uncovering intra-european differences in genetic food engineering rejection as being based on socio-demographic and informational resp. knowledge based differentials between EU countries and 3) specifying the importance of socio-economic and informational determinants of a...

On the Distribution of Net Benefits from Sustainability Initiatives in Agri-Food Supply Chains AgEcon
Ross, Brent; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Ross, Kara L..
Sustainability initiatives are frequently imposed on upstream supply chain members by their more powerful downstream partners. This paper assesses the challenges of estimating costs and benefits for participants and the difficulties associated with identifying their locations and effects in the supply chain. The paper argues that the success and endurance of agri-food supply chains that purport to pursue sustainability objectives depend critically on the distribution of the associated costs and benefits. It calls on supply chain leaders to give careful consideration to the distribution of net benefits across the chain to ensure that opportunism and moral hazard are minimized.

The Effect of Innovation on Agricultural and Agri-food Exports in OECD Countries AgEcon
Ghazalian, Pascal L.; Furtan, William Hartley.
This paper investigates the effect of innovation on primary agricultural and processed food product exports among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. A theoretical gravity equation that accounts for innovation is derived. The empirical exercise uses panel data sets covering 21 OECD countries for the period 1990-2003. The R&D capital stock is employed as a tangible way of measuring innovation. Empirical results show that R&D has enhanced exports in the primary agricultural sector. Meanwhile, the market expansion effect of R&D appears to be more than offset by the market power effect in the food processing sector, resulting in a decrease in exports. Also, evidence was found of a positive vertical...

Agri-food supply chains and sustainability-related issues: evidence from across the Scottish agri-food economy AgEcon
Leat, Philip M.K.; Lamprinopoulou-Kranis, Chrysa; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata.
This paper examines the influence of agri-food supply chains on the sustainability-related activities and decisions of Scottish farmers, as well as the treatment of sustainability issues by food processors and retailers themselves. It is based on 8 whole chain case studies covering some of Scotland’s major agricultural products. The cases identify differing levels of understanding and activities related to sustainability, but widespread acknowledgement that sustainability involves the development of chains within which all parties can achieve acceptable profits. Indeed, collaborative supply chains, which seek improved economic performance, frequently assist environmental and social sustainability. The main drivers of sustainability are found to be the cost...

Food Reserve Stocks and Critical Food Shortages - a Proposal Based on the Needs of Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Lind, Kim Martin.
This working paper examines the food security policy, where food security means ensuring an adequate supply of food for hungry people. In particular, the recommendations of FAO are being used as a measuring rod against which food security policies are assessed. By means of FAO's database a statistical analysis of all Sub-Saharan Africa countries with respect to measuring the incidence and severity of critical food shortages are carried out. Stock policies seem to have been the answer when issues of ensuring adequate supplies have surfaced. In the paper, an estimate of the costs of keeping stocks is provided, and the costs are quite staggering. Based on the statistical analysis an estimate of the number and volume of acute food shortages per year in...

GRAZING, GOODS AND GIRTH: DETERMINANTS AND EFFECTS AgEcon
Hamermesh, Daniel S..
Using the 2006-07 American Time Use Survey and its Eating and Health Module, I show that over half of adult Americans report grazing (secondary eating/drinking) on a typical day, with grazing time almost equaling primary eating/drinking time. An economic model predicts that higher wage rates (price of time) will lead to substitution of grazing for primary eating/drinking, especially by raising the number of grazing incidents relative to meals. This prediction is confirmed in these data. Eating meals more frequently is associated with lower BMI and better self-reported health, as is grazing more frequently. Food purchases are positively related to time spent eating—substitution of goods for time is difficult—but are lower when eating time is spread over...

Sources of human non-typhoid salmonellosis: a review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Freitas Neto,OC de; Penha Filho,RAC; Barrow,P; Berchieri Junior,A.
Salmonellosis is a worldwide disease caused by bacteria of the genus Salmonella. Currently, there are over 2,500 identified serovars of Salmonella. A reduced number of these serovars, about eighty, are implicated in most animals and human diseases. Most cases of salmonellosis in humans are associated with the consumption of contaminated food products such as beef, pork, poultry meat, eggs, vegetables, juices and other kind of foods. It may also be associated with the contact between humans and infected pet animals. Therefore, the chain of human salmonellosis is very complex and in most cases the origin of the infection is difficult to establish. The use of antimicrobial agents to treat and to prevent bacterial infections in humans and animals, as well as...

Nutritional ecology of blowflies (Diptera, Calliphoridae): estimates of critical larval weight for pupation on two different Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ribeiro,Cássio da Silva; Von Zuben,Cláudio José.
Under natural environmental conditions, blowflies utilize discrete and ephemeral feeding resources such as decaying carcasses. Competition for food on such feeding substrates is usually very severe, and only the individuals that are capable of attaining the critical larval weight for pupation will be able to survive. This critical weight is hitherto unknown for several blowfly species; therefore, the current work is aimed at obtaining such a critical value for four blowfly species of the genera Chrysomya and Lucilia, deploying two types of feeding substrate, namely, artificial diet and macerated bovine meat. On the whole, the critical weights ranged from 30 to 35 mg. The lowest larval weight which permitted pupation was 30.0 mg for Chrysomya megacephala...

Nymph developmental time and survivorship, adult longevity, reproduction and body weight of Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) feeding on natural and artificial diets Rev. Bras. entomol.
Panizzi,Antônio R.; Duo,Leandro J. S.; Bortolato,Nágila M.; Siqueira,Fábio.
The biology of nymphs and adults of the neotropical pentatomid, Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas), feeding on the natural foods, soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill immature pods, and corn, Zea mays L. immature seeds, and on an artificial dry diet, was studied in the laboratory. Nymph developmental time was shorter on the natural foods (ca. 21-22 days) than on the artificial diet (28 days), and most nymphs reached adulthood on the food plants (55% on soybean and 73% on corn) than on the artificial diet (40%). Fresh body weight at adult emergence was similar and higher for females raised as nymphs on the natural foods, compared to females from nymphs raised on the artificial diet; for males, weights were similar on all foods. Mean (female and male) survivorship...

Dietary phosphorus requirement of pejerrey fingerlings (Odontesthes bonariensis) R. Bras. Zootec.
Rocha,Cleber Bastos; Portelinha,Mauro Kaster; Fernandes,João Morato; Britto,Aline Conceição Pfaff de; Piedras,Sérgio Renato Noguez; Pouey,Juvêncio Luís Osório Fernandes.
To determine the available phosphorus requirement of pejerrey fish, four semi-purified diets were formulated to contain increasing available phosphorus levels (0.90, 2.7, 5.7 and 8.3 g/kg). Each diet was assigned to groups of 10 fish with average weight of 1.26±0.17 g, distributed into a completely randomized design with four treatments and four replications. Fish were fed at a rate of 10% total biomass four times a day for 60 days. The parameters productive performance, body chemical composition and mineral composition of bones and scales were evaluated. The best productive performance of fingerlings was obtained with the diet containing 4.3 g/kg available phosphorus. The average level of 6.3 g/kg available phosphorus promotes better mineralization of...

Performance, intestinal histomorphometry, and blood parameters of post-weaning piglets receiving different levels of soy protein concentrate in the diet R. Bras. Zootec.
Resende,Moisés Queiroz; Mello,Heloisa Helena de Carvalho; Mascarenhas,Alessandra Gimenez; Arnhold,Emmanuel; Nunes,Romão da Cunha; Teixeira,Karla Andrade; Xavier,Hyara Paula Fleuri; Borges,Kamilla Martins.
ABSTRACT Seventy-two barrows were used to evaluate the effects of the use of soy protein concentrate (SPC) in diets of post-weaning piglets on their performance, intestinal histomorphometry, and blood parameters. Piglets were weaned at 21 days of age and distributed in a randomized-block experimental design with four treatments (0, 3, 6, and 9% SPC), six replications, and three piglets per replication. Diets were formulated to meet the requirement of the piglets according to phases of 21 to 32, 33 to 42, and 43 to 66 days of age. Both feed and water were provided ad libitum during the entire experiment. The feed of the phase of 43 to 66 days was based on corn and soybean meal. In the period between 21 and 32 days of age, the use of SPC in the diet did not...

Performance and carcass characteristics of lambs fed diets with fat and vitamin E R. Bras. Zootec.
Pinto,Adriana Paiva Paula; Furusho-Garcia,Iraides Ferreira; Leopoldino Júnior,Izac; Olalquiaga Pérez,Juan Ramón; Alves,Nadja Gomes; Pereira,Idalmo Garcia.
This experiment aimed to determine the influence of diets with inclusion of protected fat and vitamin E on performance, yield and carcass characteristics of feedlot lambs with different weights. Thirty-two non-castrated Santa Ines lambs were fed diets with a ratio of 40% forage and 60% concentrate ad libitum, with presence or absence of protected fat and/or vitamin E, in a total of four diets. Two weights of early containment were also considered: between 20 and 25 kg and between 30 and 35 kg. All animals were slaughtered at 84 days of confinement. Animals fed diets without addition of protected fat, regardless of the use of vitamin E, had the highest intakes of dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and ash, and decreased intake of ether...
