Bestman, Monique; Cuijpers, Willemijn; Baars, Ton.

HACCP for Parasite Control Organic Eprints
Früh, Barbara; Dippel, Sabine; Leeb, Christine.
Deliverables of the COREPIG project are management tools based on the HACCP principle (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points). These tools help farmers (in a farm specific way) to solve and prevent problems with endoparasites, reproduction and farrowing problems, weaning diarrhoea and suckling piglet mortality. They are available as Microsoft Excel® files. We recommend that the tools be used by the farmer together with the farm's advisor or veterinarian. Each tool contains instructions for use and consists of three parts: i) a questionnaire for the farmer, ii) a check list to be used in the barn and iii) the farm specific report.

Relationships between sow and piglet traits in organic production outdoors and indoors Organic Eprints
Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta.
The aim of this study was to describe sow and piglet traits and the relationship between them in animals bred for conventional production kept in organic outdoor and indoor environments. 40 sows were studied during a seven week lactation. In parity one and three the sows farrowed outdoors (April to September) in huts and were moved to family grazing paddocks two weeks post partum (pp). In parity two and four the sows farrowed indoors (October to March) in individual pens and were moved to family pens with deep straw bedding two weeks pp. High backfat and weight loss during lactation was related to low piglet mortality and the relationship was stronger outdoors than indoors. Large litters had lower piglet growth than small litters and the relationship was...

Outdoor runs for cattle and pigs are compulsory for organic farms in Europe from 2011 the latest according to the EU regulation (1804/1999). Aim of the study was to investi-gate management and investment costs of runs on German farms. 20 pig farms of a special brand for animal friendly husbandry were investigated with a questionnaire and more detailed investigations were carried out on 10 farms. Furthermore, data were evaluated from a questionnaire of ca. 800 organic cattle farms and from farm visits of ca. 100 farms. Cattle: Nearly half of organic dairy farms had access to outdoor runs. However, the percentage was lower in stanchion barns than in loose housing systems. Furthermore, the percentage was lower for young stock, fattening bulls or calves....

Bussemas, Ralf; Weissmann, Friedrich.
Due to the minimum requirement of the EEC Regulation 2092/91 of 40 days organic piglet suckling period typically takes about 6 weeks. But piglets weaned in such a way are often characterized by inferior performance and health status. Therefore a study with a control group (42 days suckling period) and a test group (63 days suckling period) of 18 sows each should clarify whether an extended suckling period and therefore older piglets result in better performance and health status of the piglets. Three farrowing cycles with 108 litters were recorded. The extended suckling period caused an improved piglets’ growth rate, a reduced number of medically treated piglets but an almost unaffected piglet loss rate and a positively affected body condition of...

Umweltverträgliche Freilandhaltung von Mastschweinen im Ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Brandt, Michael; Sundrum, Albert.
Outdoor pig fattening can lead to environmental impact due to high nutrients loads and local hot spots of nutrient inputs. In a project fattening pigs were kept outside to assess the input of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) and nutrient distribution under various management conditions (reducing the daily supply with concentrate by offering field fodder and allocation of the area with field fodder). Finally, huts and troughs were shifted to provide better conditions for the distribution of faeces. With a concentrate diet that contributed to 80 % to the calculated requirements, the nutrient input corresponded with the regulations of the organic farming associations and the EEC-Regulation. A daily ration of concentrate according to the...

The use of outdoor runs with rooting areas and drinkers by organic pigs Organic Eprints
Vermeer, Herman M.; Borgsteede, Fred H.M.; Altena, Henk.
Hygiene is often a problem on the outdoor runs of growing organic pigs. Manure and urine are mainly excreted outside, but spread all over the run. Reducing the dirty surface may improve well being, reduce ammonia emission, improve hygiene and re-duce labour. The presence of a rooting area and of a drinker on the outdoor run were tested in a 2x2 facto-rial design. The pens with the rooting areas had a higher number of pigs on the outdoor run than the pens without a rooting area (1.6 vs 1.2 pigs). This was caused by more pigs in area 2 and 3. At higher temperatures there were more pigs outside, except in the rooting area: this was popular at all temperatures. A rooting area resulted in a cleaner outdoor area, however in some cases the rooting area became a...

Paddock management systems for organic growing pigs: Effect of land allocation strategies on foraging activity and excretory behaviour Organic Eprints
Helmerichs, Juliane.
The EU regulations for organic farming require outdoor access for pigs, as one of the main organic principles is to establish sustainable farming systems including harmonious relationships between animals, plants and environment. Outdoor access for pigs provides benefits in terms of animal welfare as pigs are able to express their natural and social behaviour. However, it is still common to keep organic growing pigs indoors with access to outdoor concrete yards. Main reasons for not keeping growing pigs on pasture are high nutrient inputs to the free-range area and high feed costs due to an increased energy demand in outdoor pigs. Reasons for the high nutrient loads on free range areas are the not-random excretory behaviour as well as the high input of...

Effect of rodent control on Toxoplasma gondii infections in animal friendly pig farms with a rodent problem. Organic Eprints
Kijlstra, Dr. Aize; Cornelissen, Jan; Jongert, Dr. Erik; de Craeye, Stephane.
Livestock farming can be prone to rodent infestations as it provides unlimited amounts of shelter, water and food to commensal rodents. Besides economic losses and structural damages, these rodents may transmit pathogens directly to farmers or via livestock to consumers of livestock products. Hygienic standards in intensive pig production systems have largely eliminated the contact between rodents and livestock. The introduction of animal-friendly production sytems may however lead to an increased contact between livestock and small mammals (both rodents & insectivores). This has led to a demand for rodent control methods that are in line with ecologic principles. To underline the necessity of appropriate rodent control in animal-friendly farming...

Performance and carcass quality of fully on partly outdoor reared pigs in organic production Organic Eprints
Strudsholm, Karin; Hermansen, John E..
Outdoor rearing of finishers can be considered a relevant option in organic pig production. The performance and carcass characteristics of 245 organically produced and free-range born crossbred pigs allocated to five treatments were compared. The five treatments were: transfer to a barn with free access to feed (1) at weaning and until slaughter, (2) at a live weight of 40 kg and until slaughter, (3) at live weight of 80 kg and until slaughter, or reared at pasture (4) with free or (5) limited access to concentrates until slaughter. Pigs fed ad libitum fed indoor compared to pigs fed ad libitum outdoor had a significant lower feed consumption (5 MJ ME /kg gain), lower lean percentage (2.3%), and a higher backfat depth (1.1 mm)(all P < 0.05). Compared...

SILAGE IN DIETS FOR ORGANIC SOWS IN GESTATION Organic Eprints
Bikker, P.; Binnendijk, G.P.; Vermeer, H. M.; van der Peet-Schwering, C.M.C..
This study was conducted to determine whether the supply of grass silage or grass silage mixed with barley or CCM to organically raised gestating sows would allow a reduction of compound feed allowance without loss in animal performance. On average, sows fed grass silage or mixed silage were able to compensate for a pre-set reduction of 1 kg or 1.5 kg compound feed, respectively. However, the variation in silage intake between individual sows was large, with a number of mainly young sows consuming less silage than the required amount. Consequently, these sows showed a net back fat loss during the experimental period from d 7 of gestation to weaning. Our results indicate that more feeder space than 1 for 8 sows is required to allow adequate silage intake in...

Integration of organic animal production intor land use with special reference to swine and poultry Organic Eprints
Hermansen, John E.; Strudsholm, Karin; Horsted, Klaus.
The development in organic livestock production can be attributed to an increased consumer interest in organic products while, at the same time, increased farmers' interest in converting to organic production methods—often stimulated by governmental support or subsidies. It is important that organic production systems can fulfil the expectations of each of these stakeholders if organic livestock production is to increase further. This is of particular importance if organic pig and poultry production (other than egg) is to move from the present niche-production to a significant place in the food market, as in the case of beef and milk. It can be argued that the limited organic pork and poultry production is related to the fact that it is far more...

Impact of organic pig production systems on CO2 emission, C sequestration and nitrate pollution Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels; Hermansen, John E.; Kristensen, Ib Sillebak; Eriksen, Jørgen; Tvedegaard, Niels; Petersen, Bjørn Molt.
Organic rules for grazing and access to outdoor area in pig production may be met in different ways, which express compromises between considerations for animal welfare, feed self-reliance and negative environmental impact such as greeehouse gas emissions and nitrate pollution. This article compares environmental impact of the main organic pig systems in Denmark. Normally sows are kept in huts on grassland and finishing pigs are being raised in stables with access to an outdoor run. One alternative practised is rearing also the fattening pigs on grassland all year round. The third method investigated was a one-unit pen system mainly consisting of a deep litter area under a climate tent and with restricted access to a grazing area. Using life cycle...

Grevsen, Kai; Jensen, Bent Borg.
