Bradyrhizobium spp. Strains in Symbiosis with Pigeon Pea cv. Fava-Larga under Greenhouse and Field Conditions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rufini,Márcia; Oliveira,Dâmiany Pádua; Trochmann,André; Soares,Bruno Lima; Andrade,Messias José Bastos de; Moreira,Fatima Maria de Souza.
ABSTRACT: Optimization of symbiosis between nitrogen-fixing bacteria and legumes has been extensively studied, seeking agricultural sustainability. To evaluate the symbiotic efficiency of nitrogen-fixing bacterial strains belonging to the Bradyrhizobium genus with pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) cv. Fava-Larga, experiments were conducted in Leonard jars (axenic conditions), pots with soil, and in the field. Ten strains were tested in Leonard jars, and three strains, in addition to BR 29, were selected according to their ability to promote the growth of pigeon pea, for further tests in pots with different soil types (Inceptsol and Oxisol) and in the field (Oxisol). Treatments were compared with strains BR 2003 and BR 2801 (approved as inoculants for...

Mutation induction as a strategy to overcome the restricted genetic base in Physalis Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Trevisani,Nicole; Melo,Rita Carolina de; Bernardy,João Pedro Fossa; Pierre,Patrícia Maria Oliveira; Coimbra,Jefferson Luís Meirelles; Guidolin,Altamir Frederico.
Abstract The restricted genetic base in physalis in Southern Brazil is a challenge that requires genetic breeding for the achievement of fruits with superior agronomic quality. Therefore, genetic changes were induced in physalis for the selection of populations with superior fruit quality. To that end, seven populations of physalis were submitted to gamma irradiation (0,100 and 200 Grays – Gy), which provided 21 populations. Significant population difference was observed, which indicates the existence of variability between at least two populations of physalis. The contrasts showed difference for Colômbia01, Colômbia02, Caçador and CAV. The mutation induction was effective at causing genetic variations in these populations. For Colombia01 (100 Gy), it was...

Physical and chemical variability of Camu-camu fruits in cultivated and uncultivated areas of the Colombian Amazon Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Aguirre-Neira,Juan Carlos; Reis,Maurício Sedrez dos; Cardozo,Maritza Adelina Rojas; Raz,Lauren; Clement,Charles Roland.
Abstract Camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia, Myrtaceae) has the highest reported vitamin C concentrations of any native Amazonian fruit tree species, with increasing demand in domestic and international markets. With the goal of aiding management and conservation programs, we studied the diversity of camu-camu in cultivated and uncultivated areas, based on physicochemical characterization of the fruits. We evaluated 2,250 fruits from 87 plants from six localities of the Tarapacá district (Amazonas, Colombia) and from the Amazonian fruit germplasm bank of Agrosavia (Meta, Colombia). We found high physicochemical variability within and among localities, and superior fruits in the localities where non-cultivated plants were sampled, especially Pechiboy. Using...

SELECTION OF FISÁLIS POPULATIONS FOR HIBRIDIZATIONS, BASED ON FRUIT TRAITS Rev. Bras. Frutic.
TREVISANI,NICOLE; SCHMIT,RODOLFO; BECK,MATTHEUS; GUIDOLIN,ALTAMIR FREDERICO; COIMBRA,JEFFERSON LUÍS MEIRELLES.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to characterize the genetic variability in fisális populations and select promising parents based on fruit traits. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with six populations. Five plants per treatment were sampled. The evaluated traits were fruit weight, capsule weight, 1000- seed weight and fruit diameter. The data were subjected to multivariate analysis of variance with error specification between and within (p <0.05). Mahalanobis’ distance was used as a measure of genetic dissimilarity. Significant differences for the assessed traits were detected between fisális populations. The ratio error among by within indicated no need for sampling within the experimental unit. Dissimilarity was...

‘BRS MANDINHO’: THE FIRST PLATYCARPA PEACH CULTIVAR RELEASED IN BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Frutic.
RASEIRA,MARIA DO CARMO BASSOLS; SCARANARI,CIRO; FRANZON,RODRIGO CEZAR; FELDBERG,NELSON PIRES; NAKASU,BONIFÁCIO HIDEYUKI.
ABSTRACT In recent years, platycarpa peaches have reached high prices due to their good acceptance in the international market. However, the great majority of the released varieties are high chill and do not adapt to Brazilian conditions except on a few microclimes of high altitudes. The cultivar BRS Mandinho is the first peach cultivar of the botanical variety platicarpa, released in Brazil and adapted to subtropical conditions. The plants are vigorous and, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the blooming occurs on the second half of July. The fruits are sweet and ripe in November with an average weight of 55.3 g.

Genetic analysis of whole mitochondrial genome of Lateolabrax maculatus (Perciformes: Moronidae) indicates the presence of two populations along the Chinese coast Rev. Bras. Zool.
Gong,Jie; Chen,Baohua; Li,Bijun; Zhou,Zhixiong; Shi,Yue; Ke,Qiaozhen; Zhang,Dianchang; Xu,Peng.
ABSTRACT The whole mitochondrial genome of Lateolabrax maculatus (Cuvier, 1828) was used to investigate the reasons for the observed patterns of genetic differentiation among 12 populations in northern and southern China. The haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of L. maculatus were 0.998 and 0.00169, respectively. Pairwise FST values between populations ranged from 0.001 to 0.429, correlating positively with geographic distance. Genetic structure analysis and haplotype network analysis indicated that these populations were split into two groups, in agreement with geographic segregation and environment. Tajima’s D values, Fu’s Fs tests and Bayesian skyline plot (BSP) indicated that a demographic expansion event may have occurred in the history of...

Dissecting the genetic architecture of complex traits and its impact on genetic improvement programs: lessons learnt from the Virginia chicken lines R. Bras. Zootec.
Pettersson,Mats E.; Carlborg,Örjan.
Long-term selection experiments provide a valuable resource for understanding the genetic changes that take place in animal improvement programs. The Virginia chicken lines have for more than 50 years been subjected to single-trait, bi-directional, divergent selection for high and low juvenile body weight. It is one of the most well studied experimental populations in agricultural animals and has played an instrumental role in the understanding of the genetic basis of complex traits. In this paper, we summarize the findings from the more recent publications focusing on the efforts to identify the loci contributing to selection response as well as discuss the currently ongoing research. We conclude by describing some future research prospects that promise...

Persistency of lactation using random regression models and different fixed regression modeling approaches R. Bras. Zootec.
Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Costa,Claudio Napolis.
Milk yield test-day records on the first three lactations of 25,500 Holstein cows were used to estimate genetic parameters and predict breeding values for nine measures of persistency and 305-d milk yield in a random regression animal model using two criteria to define the fixed regression. Legendre polynomials of fourth and fifth orders were used to model the fixed and random regressions of lactation curves. The fixed regressions were adjusted for average milk yield on populations (single) or subpopulations (multiple) formed by cows that calved at the same age and in the same season. Akaike Information (AIC) and Bayesian Information (BIC) criteria indicated that models with multiple regression lactation curves had the best fit to test-day milk records of...

Selective breeding of Arabian and Thoroughbred racehorses in Algeria: perceptions, objectives and practices of owners-breeders R. Bras. Zootec.
Tennah,Safia; Farnir,Frédéric; Kafidi,Nacerredine; Nsangou,Ibrahim Njikam; Leroy,Pascal; Antoine-Moussiaux,Nicolas.
This survey, conducted with 461 racehorse owners-breeders in Algeria between 2009 and 2011, investigates their perceptions, objectives and practices regarding selective breeding. Racehorse breeding is a full-time professional activity for a third of interviewees. The holdings are small-sized with 77% owning one or two mares. The regular practice of mating is here used to categorize breeders according to their degree of professionalization (38.4% professional vs. 61.6% occasional breeders). Experience in the sector was also used to classify breeders, considering as "junior" the breeders under 10 years experience (38.8%) and as "senior" those above 10 years (61.2%). More than professionalization, experience shows a significant impact on practices and...

Toral,Fábio Luiz Buranelo; Alencar,Maurício Mello de.
It was evaluated alternatives for analysis of performance records and ranking of Charolais x Zebu crossbred bulls. Data of weight at six ages and average daily weight gain in eight periods of 883 21/32 Charolais + 11/32 Nellore bulls in performance tests were used. The direct additive genetic values were predicted in single trait analysis using animal models with classificatory fixed effects of contemporary groups and age of dam at calving and age of animal at weighing as linear covariable, depending on the trait. As random effects, it was considered the direct additive genetic effect, the permanent maternal environmental and residual effects for all traits. Phenotypic values adjusted for fixed effects included in the model of each trait were also...

Genetic evaluation of Devon Cattle using a reaction norms model R. Bras. Zootec.
Corrêa,Marcela Bicca Bragança; Dionello,Nelson José Laurino; Cardoso,Fernando Flores.
The objective of this study was to evaluate differences in sire genetic values obtained by a conventional animal model (AM) and by a reaction norms hierarchical model (RNHM) that considers the genotype by environment interaction. A total of 25,500 records was used collected by PROMEBO - beef cattle improvement program of the National Breeders Association "Herd Book Collares" on Devon cattle born from 1980 though 2005. Post weaning gain 345 adjusted (PWG345) was the evaluated trait and the INTERGEN program was employed for data analysis. Reaction norms of the 25 sires with larger offspring showed ranking exchanges and scale effect in the environmental gradient. Spearman rank correlations between genetic values obtained by AM and RNHM at low, medium and high...

Optimum contribution selection using differential evolution R. Bras. Zootec.
Carvalheiro,Roberto; Queiroz,Sandra Aidar de; Kinghorn,Brian.
A program to determine optimum contribution selection using differential evolution was developed. The objective function to be optimized was composed by the expected merit of the future progeny and the coancestry among selected parents. Simulated and real datasets of populations with overlapping generations were used to validate and test the performance of the program. The program was computationally efficient and feasible for practical applications. The expected consequences of using the program, in contrast to empirical procedures to control inbreeding and/or to selection based exclusively on expected genetic merit, would be the improvement of the selection response and a more effective control of inbreeding.

Estimation of genetic parameters for growth traits in Tabapuã cattle using a multi-trait model R. Bras. Zootec.
Menezes,Gilberto Romeiro de Oliveira; Torres,Robledo de Almeida; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida; Silva,Luiz Otávio Campos da; Gondo,Andrea; Euclydes,Ricardo Frederico.
To provide information that can contribute to the genetic evaluation and selection in Tabapuã cattle, genetic parameters were estimated for growth traits using a multi-trait animal model. (Co)variance components were estimated by a Bayesian approach using the Gibbs Sampler. Moderate and similar responses to selection are expected when selecting for weights at the four ages evaluated, since the direct heritability estimates were similar and of average magnitude (0.18 to 0.19). The direct and maternal additive genetic correlations between all pairs of weights were higher than 0.70, indicating a high degree of association between the four traits. This suggests that using any of them as selection criteria will result in correlated response in the others and...
