ANALYSIS OF GENERI<; DAIRY ADVERTISING SCENARIOS ON RETAIL, WHOLESALE, AND FARM MILK MARKETS AgEcon
Kaiser, Harry M.; Forker, Olan D..
An econometric model of the United States dairy industry is used to simulate the economic impact of alternative strategies in the generic advertising of dairy products. Advertising programs for fluid milk, cheese, and butter are considered. The historic quarterly advertising expenditure levels experienced during the period October 1984 through December 1990 are used as a basis of comparison. A national model enables the analyst to simultaneously estimate the impact of changes in advertising expenditures on price and volume of sales at retail, wholesale, and farm levels of trade. The impact on government purchases can also be estimated. The simulations indicate that the largest impact of decreases or increases in advertising expenditures is on price. A 50...

BUSINESS SUMMARY NEW YORK STATE 1993 AgEcon
Smith, Stuart F.; Knoblauch, Wayne A.; Putnam, Linda D..
This summary and analysis of 343 New York dairy farm businesses demonstrates the use of cash accounting and accrual adjustments to measure farm profitability, cash flow, financial performance, and costs of producing milk. Traditional methods of analyzing dairy farm businesses are combined with improved evaluation techniques to show the relationship between good management performance and financial success. These farms averaged 130 cows per farm and 18,858 pounds of milk sold per cow in 1993, which are above the average size and management level of all New York dairy farms. Net farm income excluding appreciation, which is the return to the operator's labor, management, capital, and other unpaid family labor, averaged $43,936 per farm. The rate of return...

Survey of New York Dairy Farm Employers 2009 AgEcon
Maloney, Thomas R.; Bills, Nelson L..
The purpose of this study is to gather information from fruit, vegetable and dairy farm employers regarding agricultural workforce issues in New York agriculture. The survey provides new insights into five key topic areas; the number of workers on New York farms, employee wages and benefits, characteristics of the Hispanic workforce, attitudes among farm operators regarding proposed State labor law changes and Federal immigration reform. The agricultural workforce for fruit, vegetable and dairy farms in New York including part-time and full-time workers totaled 33,200. The focus of this report is on the dairy industry where the number of hired dairy employees is estimated to be 9,600. Dairy farm employers reported that experienced general laborers were...

Coupon Redemption and Its Effect on Household Cheese Purchases AgEcon
Dong, Diansheng; Kaiser, Harry M..
By endogenizing unit value and coupon redemption, we estimate U.S. household cheese purchase, quality choice, and coupon redemption equations simultaneously. Zero purchases and missing values are taken into account in the model to correct for the selectivity bias. The correlations among the three equations are found to be significant. Empirical findings show that high quality choice significantly decreases cheese purchases, while cheese coupon usage significantly increases purchases. We find that higher income households select higher quality cheese, while larger households choose lower quality cheese. Frequent coupon redeemers are found to purchase lower quality cheese. For coupon redemption, we find that African American households redeem less while...

100 Years of Dairy Farming: Town of Dryden, Tompkins County, New York AgEcon
Stanton, Bernard F.; Conneman, George J.; Hoskins, Susan B.; Smith, Stuart F..
A history and analysis of farm management surveys for the previous year, conducted on every dairy farm in the Town of Dryden each decade save one, from 1908 through 2008 is presented. Five times as much milk was sold in 2007 from dairy farms based in Dryden as was sold in 1917. Labor productivity in terms of milk sold per worker has increased 35 times in the century reflecting the great gains made from advances in agricultural technology. Dairy farm numbers have decreased from 206 in 1907 to 8 in 2007. Dryden’s dairy farms continue as an important contributor to the economy of the Town.

FRUIT CONSUMPTION, DIETARY GUIDELINES, AND AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN NEW YORK STATE -- IMPLICATIONS FOR LOCAL FOOD ECONOMIES AgEcon
Peters, Christian; Bills, Nelson L.; Wilkins, Jennifer; Smith, R. David.
Consuming locally produced foods offers many benefits to consumers, producers and the environment. As a result, local food economies are gaining attention as a means for boosting agriculture and food production in New York State. Concurrent with this interest in local agriculture is a national concern over the health effects of American food consumption patterns and the capacity of agriculture to support nutritious diets. This study merges these areas of inquiry in the context of a nutritionally and economically important agricultural sector, namely New York State fruit production. Three questions are examined in this research. 1) How does New York State fruit production compare with fruit consumption by New Yorkers? 2) How do production and consumption of...
