The Effect of threshing units’ design on performance of Teff [Eragrostistef (Zucc.)Trotter] threshers CIGR Journal
Gelaw, Geta Kidanemariam; Tilahun, Daniel; Adamu Zegeye.
Teff (Eragrostistef (Zucc.)Trotter) is a typical crop growing in most areas of Ethiopia, with the first area coverage. Threshing of teff can be performed indifferent ways; by hand beating, animal trampling and use of stationary threshers. In all cases of teff threshing, separation and cleaning are the most tedious and time consuming activities. In this research, the design effect of a newly developed type threshing unit was compared against SG-2000 stationary thresher. The comparison was focused on two independent variables: feed rate and drum speed, with three levels 275, 325 and 400kg.hr-1; and 900, 1000 and 1200 rpm respectively. The result revealed mean values of the threshing capacity, cleaning efficiency and separation efficiency are 42.30 and 45.81...

Comparative evaluation of manual cassava harvesting techniques in Kerala, India CIGR Journal
Amponsah, Shadrack Kwadwo; Sheriff, J Thajudhin; Byju, Gangadharan.
Abstract: In India, cassava is consumed as a secondary staple along with the main staple, rice, and many rural poor consume it as the staple in different forms of preparations.  Though harvesting is known to be one of the most difficult and cost-intensive field operation in cassava cultivation, mechanisation of cassava harvesting is still very low in most cassava growing areas of India due to topographic constraints, methods and scale of cultivation.  The most viable solution to overcome these constraints is to promote the use of more efficient manual harvesting tools.  Thus, the main objective of this study was to field evaluate the efficiency of four manual cassava harvesting techniques under different land preparation methods in terms of field capacity,...

Development of weight grader for dehusked coconut CIGR Journal
Monicka, A.Asha; Pandiarajan, T; Solomon, A. Brusly; Ganapathy, S.
Manual grading of dehusked coconut often leads to low profit than expected by the farmers. Appropriate grading systems guarantee a better income for the coconut growers. Therefore, a simple machine was designed and developed to grade the de-husked coconut based on its weight. The developed grader consists of an electronic weighing assembly, carrier cups with four bar linkage mechanism, proximity sensor, pneumatic actuators, and drive mechanism. Before the fabrication of grader, the tilt angle of carrier cup mechanism was optimised to ensure a free falling behaviour of dehusked coconut. The performance test of weight grader was conducted by varying the angular velocities of carrier cups (12, 14 and 16 rad/min) and signal settling time of the load cell (2, 3...

Effects of some kernel factors on palm kernel oil extraction using a screw press CIGR Journal
Ezeoha, Sunday Louis.
Several factors are known to affect mechanical oil expression from oilseeds. In this study, the influence of kernel moisture content (KMC), kernel heating temperature (KHT), kernel heating duration (KHD) and kernel particle size (KPS) on palm kernel oil (PKO) yield by a mixed variety of oil-palm kernels using a locally fabricated screw press was investigated. The one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) experimental approach was employed. Design-Expert 8P (Version 8.0.6) software was used for statistical analysis of data. Within the range of values of variables studied, the results showed that at 5% significance level only kernel size significantly affected PKO yield. Thus, KPS is a critical factor in PKO extraction using the screw press. Oil-palm kernels should not be...

A study of a shock-absorber for a front-end loader modified for agricultural purposes with an electrohydraulic directional valve CIGR Journal
Kim, Hak-Jin.
A front-end loader for agricultural purposes is the most commonly used implement for agri-tractors in Korea. As it is operated to raise, lower and carry various objects in a farming field, it introduces a large amount of stress to a tractor, causing vibrations and often lead to a mechanical breakdown. These high stresses are observed at the starting and ending points of operation, that is, the points at which the highest acceleration and deceleration occur. To reduce the sudden change of the speed, soft-start & end operation were tested with an electrohydraulic directional valve, which has a built-in ramp time spool control function. This valve was controlled by SAE-J1939 associated messages via CANBUS. This shock-absorbing system contains three ECUs...

An approach to compensation of dust effects on seed flow sensors CIGR Journal
Navid, Hosein; Fathipour, Amir; Karimi, Hadi; Ghaffarnezhad, Ali; Wang, Ning.
Optical seed mass flow sensors are widely used on seed drills and planters. An important challenge in these sensors is their malfunction in a dusty condition. Dust caused by soil and seeds may sit on the light elements and disrupt its function. In this study, an approach was developed to compensate this effect. A non-contact intelligent system with infrared diodes and a microcontroller with ARM architecture was built up to monitor the seed flow in the delivery tube of seed drills. At the hardware phase, a glass with a different radius of curvature was installed in front of the elements. The semi-cylindrical glass placement in front of the optical elements meant that the arrangement was sealed against dust. Besides, the fall of the seeds tangential to the...
