An international intercalibration exercise was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the ICES Standard Methodology for fatty acid analysis in a sample of <i>Artemia</i> and a formulated dry feed. Results were received from 11 of the 20 laboratories to which samples were sent. Five participants followed the Standard Method, five their own in-house method and one laboratory compared their own in-house method with the Standard Method. Total lipid content was reported by eight participants.<p>The average intra-laboratory variation in the determination of total lipid content was only 3.6% (CV) for the dry feed and 4.0% for the <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. The inter-laboratory variation was somewhat higher being 5.2% for the dry feed and... |

A flow-through culture system is described for the controlled production of <i>Artemia</i> cysts in 10 liter aquaria using 50 promille artificial seawater enriched with Fe-EDTA as culture medium, micronised rice bran as food source and cyclic flushes of the cultures with N2-gas as induction mechanism for oviparity. The culture water is recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a settling tank and a UV disinfection unit. Cysts are continuously harvested by filtration of the culture effluent. Production yields average 0.5 g dry cysts per day and per aquarium. |

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios have been determined on 41 strains of <i>Artemia</i> sp. from different geographic regions around the world. The delta 13C and delta 15N values ranged between -13.7 to -25.0 per mil and -0.7 to 21.2 per mil respectively. <i>Artemia</i> delta 13C values from coastal environments are consistent with a marine origin for the food source. <i>Artemia</i> from inland salt lakes have a range of carbon isotope values suggesting C3, C4 and CAM based organic matter could form the base of the <i>Artemia</i> food chain. These data indicate that... |

Two producers are described for the solid-phase extraction of ascorbic acid 2-sulfate from cysts of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> . The first one is based on reversed-phase ion pair extraction on an octadecylsilica cartridge using tetrabutylammonium as the counterion, followed by elution with methanol. In the second procedure ascorbic acid 2-sulfate is retained on a DEAE silica cartridge and eluted with 0.1M sodium salicylate. Both approaches were used as part of a quantitative reversed-phase ion pair liquid chromatographic method with detection at 254nm. The anion exchange extraction procedure is superior to its ion pair counterpart in terms of recovery (88.7±3,5% versus 63.0±12.7%), reproducibility (CVs of 3.6-7.7% versus 6.3-18.7%), and... |

A flow-through system is described for the controlled production of <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. High densities of adult brine shrimp are induced to ovoviviparity through diet manipulation, optimal culture water exchange, and high constant oxygen levels. The nauplii produced are separated from the culture tank effluents in a special recuperation filter system. The culture water is recirculated over a rotating biodisc, a cross-flow sieve, and a plate separator. The potential of this nauplii production system for application in aquaculture hatcheries is discussed. |

Hatchery rearing of bivalve mollusks depends on the production of live micro-algae, which is costly and often unpredictable, and the development of a cost-effective artificial diet would greatly reduce the operating costs and improve the efficiency of bivalve seed production. This paper reviews the literature on the use of various alternatives to on-site algal production, plus the results obtained by the authors using manipulated yeasts as algal substitutes in feeding trials with juveniles of various commercially important bivalve species, and compares this information with experience "from the field" obtained through an international survey of operators of 50 commercial and research hatcheries. Despite the extensive research efforts, it appears that... |

The production of unicellular algae is laborious and is a major constraint for the culturing of aquatic filter-feeders. Because of their small particle size and their high protein content yeasts are considered as a promising substitute for micro-algae. Furthermore, recent work has shown that baker's yeast can be converted into a digestible diet for <i>Artemia</i> by chemical treatment. The present study documents the use at laboratory scale of this manipulated yeast as an algal substitute for the culture of two anostracan species. The experiments were conducted with the brine shrimp <i>Artemia franciscana</i> and the fairy shrimp <i>Streptocephalus proboscideus</i>. A similar experimental set-up was used for both species.... |

Brine shrimp being non-selective filter-feeders, cheap agricultural waste products should be evaluated as potential food sources for their controlled mass culturing. Preliminary results of screening tests performed with wheat bran, soybean meal , rice bran and whey powder in culturing systems of various size are reported. Wheat bran appears to be unsuitable as monodiet for brine shrimp. The other products tested support good growth although specific precautions have to be taken with some foods to avoid problems of water quality during culturing. Processing techniques for the manual or mechanical preparation of inert feeds for <i>Artemia</i> are indicated. The possibility of influencing the fatty acid pattern of cultured brine shrimp by varying... |

The effect of bacterial strains on the growth rate of rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis, was determined under monoxenic conditions. The first objective was to obtain sterile rotifer cultures starting from rotifer resting eggs using merthiolate or glutaraldehyde as disinfectant. Sterile rotifer cultures were obtained, without affecting the hatching ability of the resting eggs, when 0.05 µl/l glutaraldehyde was used. This disinfection procedure was used to examine the effect of 20 bacterial strains, isolated from well-performing live-feed production systems, on the population growth rate of rotifers cultured under monoxenic conditions. Five out of the 20 bacterial strains tested were able to improve significantly the asexual reproduction of rotifers. The... |
