Market management: the impact on the development of an ornamental plants supply chain in Curitiba, Brazil Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Muraro,Daniel; Negrelle,Raquel R.B; Cuquel,Francine L; Anacleto,Adilson.
The results of a study of the impact of market management on the ornamental plants supply chain are presented, using Curitiba, which is considered the most expressive flower market in Paraná State, as a case study. The flower market in Paraná ranks fifth in Brazil in terms of the volume of commercialization and sixth in terms of per capita consumption. However, this State, which initiated floriculture activities nearly 50 years ago, does not have a prominent florist supply pole, although adequate environmental conditions for such activities exist in Paraná. Therefore, to obtain more information about and a better understanding of the determinants of this scenario, a literature review and interviews were conducted. The flower shops structure and operations...

Species richness, diversity and human activities in an elevation gradient of a high-ecosystem in Lagunas Huascoaltinas, Atacama Region, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sanhueza,Doris; Miranda,Marcelo; Gómez,Miguel; Bonacic,Cristian.
The relationship between species richness, diversity and grazing frequency along an altitudinal gradient (1900-3400 m) of an Andean ecosystem indicates that there is an intense human pressure on vegetation use. To identify the vascular flora and its conservation, 20 sites were sampled in two visits during 2006. We identified 79 taxa, including 62.03% native species, 22.78% adventitious and 8.86% endemic (the remaining 6.33% was identified only at the genus level). Some genera were underrepresented. We also observed latitudinal limits (Alstremeria andina), monotypic genera (Geoffroea, Kurzamra, Phragmites, Tessaria and Salix) and monogeneric families (Buddlejaceae, Ephedraceae, Equisetaceae, Malesherbiaceae, Salicaceae and Oxalidaceae). Moreover, we found...

Biological vulnerability in the Elqui Valley (Coquimbo Region, Chile) to economically important arthropods Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pizarro-Araya,Jaime; Cepeda-Pizarro,Jorge; Barriga,Juan E; Bodini,Andrés.
Current climate conditions in north-central Chile (25057'-32013'S,71043'-68°16'W)are characterized by increasing temperatures and decreasing rainfall. Global warming is expected to alter the hydrology and ecoclimatic characteristics of north-central basins with multiple effects, including changes in plant and arthropod phenology and biodiversity. Among these basins, the Elqui Valley (29°50'S, 70°52'W) stands out for its large population and the economic importance of tourism and agriculture. The taxonomic composition of agriculturally and medically important arthropods was studied in three locations in the Elqui Valley by manual capture of specimens and interviews with farmers, agricultural workers, and local leaders. Out of a total of 145 species of...

Determining the site index of Teak (Tectona grandis L.) plantations in Tabasco, Mexico Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Minoche,Djhon; Herrero,Celia; Dominguez-Dominguez,Marivel; Martinez-Zurimendi,Pablo.
Abstract Forest stand productivity is defined as the quantitative estimation of a specific area's potential to produce biomass over a determined period of time. The site index has been the predominant method used to evaluate forest stand productivity. Teak is one of the most accepted species within the international timber market due to the physical and aesthetic qualities of this wood. The aim of this study was to determine the site index of teak plantations. The study was conducted in teak plantations of Tabasco. Data were obtained from a network of 10 plantations consisting of 35 plots measured over four successive inventories (2003 to 2006). The data were fitted to five models, of which four were based on proposed finite difference equations and a...

Plant nutrition, foliar standards, chlorophyll activity and soil nutrient status of two cultivars of Leucospermum cordifolium (Proteaceae) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Álvarez,Carlos E; Fernández-Falcón,Marino; Hernández,M. Mercedes.
Two cultivars ('Succession II' and 'Tango') of Leucospermum cordifolium were studied over three years in commercial plantations with optimum yields located on subtropical La Palma Island (Canarian Archipelago). Four foliar samplings were taken per year to determine the evolution of the N, P, and K contents over time and to determine the optimal month for foliar standard sampling. Foliar chlorophyll activity and the foliar standard concentrations of macro- and micronutrients were determined. Soil samples were also taken. Both cultivars developed well in soils with acid and slightly acid pH, low and high organic matter content, and in some cases, high available P concentrations, though Proteaceae is generally considered P sensitive. Chlorophyll activity...

Harmonia axyridis in Chile: a new threat Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Grez,Audrey; Zaviezo,Tania; González,Guillermo; Rothmann,Sergio.
In this work, we document the presence of Harmonia axyridis in Chile, an invasive coccinellid species that has had negative effects in other regions of the world, such as: impacts on non-target arthropods, invasions of houses and fruit damage. This species has been found in the last three years in the Metropolitan and Valparaíso regions, in crops, pine plantations and inside houses. We warn about the consequences of the introduction of this species to Chile and claim to take actions to avoid its spread in the country.

Effect of crop load on the phenological, vegetative and reproductive behavior of the ‘Frantoio’ olive tree (Olea europaea L.) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Beyá-Marshall,Víctor; Fichet,Thomas.
The aim of this study was to characterize the phenological, vegetative and reproductive behavior variables of ‘Frantoio’ olive trees in an "off’ year (with a low crop load) and an "on" year (with a high crop load). To do this, during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons, "off" and "on", respectively, phenological variables, plant growth (shoots and roots) and reproductive growth (type of flower, fruit set and growth), were monitored biweekly. In addition, the yield per tree was assessed, and the crop load was estimated. The main results showed that crop load strongly influenced these variables. The distribution and intensity of vegetative growth, both in the roots and aboveground, decreased more and had lower intensity in the high fruiting season, with a...

Agricultural employment in Spain and new Keynesian economics Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Andrés González-Moralejo,Silvia; García Cortés,Mildrey.
Our research examines the agricultural labor market from the perspective of new Keynesian economics. Our aim is to verify that total gross output, total factor productivity, and real wages act as determinants of employment levels in Spanish agriculture. Three structural econometric models were estimated using census data for the period 1998-2013. This was a period of profound economic and social change, and the following two distinct sub-periods were compared: 1998-2007 (a period of economic boom) and 2008-2013 (a period of recession). The empirical evidence is consistent with neo-Keynesian theoretical posits, albeit with certain qualifiers derived from the specifically rural nature of the evidence. The results show a negative relationship between...

Estimation of the lifespan of agricultural tractor using a diffusion model at the aggregate level Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Muñoz,Ricardo; Llanos,José.
The adoption of agricultural tractors by farms has resulted in different combinations, relationships and established ways of production of localities, regions and countries. The dynamics of the tractorization process are defined by the balance of the units that enter the fleet and those that are removed at the end of their useful life. This study uses a diffusion pattern and aggregated adoption of the agricultural tractor, the parameters of which were determined using a nonlinear estimation procedure and country-level data for Chile. Using the predictive power of the model, a longitudinal series of tractor fleets was estimated, and then the balance was calculated considering the units that were discharged. To more accurately determine the average lifespan...

Quantification and control of runoff and soil erosion on avocado orchards on ridges along steep-hillslopes Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Youlton,Cristian; Espejo,Paulina; Biggs,Jaime; Norambuena,Marcela; Cisternas,Marco; Neaman,Alexander; Salgado,Eduardo.
Soil erosion increases after building downward ridges along steep hillslopes, in particular during the first winter. This erosion decreases when trees grow, but runoff increases. This study presents results of erosion under five different treatments: (i) soil cover with native vegetation, (ii) bare downward ridges, (iii) downward ridges with six year-old avocado orchard, (iv) downward ridges with plant cover and (v) downward ridges covered with agroindustrial waste sludge. The results revealed 20 t ha-1 of soil erosion during the first year after ridges were built, while mitigation measures can reduce erosion in 90%. Adult orchard showed the largest runoff, which probably is due to the effect of a high and about constant soil moisture during irrigation...

Use of mesoscale model MM5 forecasts as proxies for surface meteorological and agroclimatic variables Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Silva,Daniel O; Meza,Francisco J; Varas,Eduardo.
There is increasing interest in meteorological information and its application to strategic planning at the farm as well as regional level. Although we have recently seen significant improvements to strengthen and enlarge networks of weather observations, their density is still insufficient to cover large extents at the desired spatial and temporal resolution. Climate scientists have developed and used mesoscale models to understand and predict future atmospheric conditions. These models represent a major contribution to objective weather forecasts throughout numerical simulations. They use global circulation outputs as boundary conditions and can be run in a nested manner so as to increase their spatial resolution. Because of this, we can obtain...
