Morphological variation and taxonomic revision of five south-eastern subspecies of Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca (L.) (Aves: Sylviidae) Naturalis
Loskot, V.M..
Individual, sex, age, seasonal and geographic variation of size and plumage coloration of Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca (Linnaeus, 1758) was studied on more than 1100 bird skins from all parts of its breeding range. The results of analysis of birds from the south-eastern part of the breeding range of the species support the validity of five light-coloured subspecies: halimodendri Sushkin, 1904, telengitica Sushkin, 1925, snigirewskii Stachanow, 1929, minula Hume, 1873, and margelanica Stolzmann, 1897. Their diagnoses and ranges are refined and supplemented. Numerous phenotypically intermediate birds from intergradation zones between the subspecies show that these five together with the two northern darkcoloured forms S. c. curruca and S. c. blythi...

Otiorhynchus apenninus, een nieuwe snuitkever voor Nederland (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Naturalis
Heijerman, T.; Moraal, L.; Burgers, J.; Goffau, L. de.
Otiorhynchus apenninus, a new weevil for the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Otiorhynchus apenninus (= O. salicicola) is reported for the first time from the Netherlands. The species was collected in a garden at Hoofddorp (Noord-Holland), Rijswijk (Zuid-Holland) and in and around a garden at Heemstede (Noord-Holland). The species appeared to be present at the locality at Heemstede for several successive years, despite an attempt to eradicate it. We therefore conclude that O. apenninus must be considered as established in the Netherlands. Some data are presented on the European distribution and host plants of the species. Illustrations of the male and female genitalia are provided.

Some notes on the associated occurrence of the crab Cycloes Cristata (Brullé, 1837) (Brachyura: Calappidae) and two types of Benthic fish in the Canary Islands Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den.
A concise survey is presented of the species of the crab genus Cycloes De Haan, 1837 (Brachyura: Calappidae). Notes are presented on the associated ocurrence, on shallow sandy bottoms in the Canary Islands (Lanzarote, Gran Canaria), of the eastern Atlantic Cycloes cristata (Brullé, 1837) and the fishes Bothus podus (De la Roche, 1809) (Bothidae), Trachinus draco L., 1758 and T. cf. araneus Cuvier, 1829 (Trachinidae).

The Kinker diatom collection: discovery – exploration – exploitation Naturalis
Sterrenburg, F.A.S.; Wolf, H. de.
Johannes Kinker (1823-1900) was a typical representative of the Victorian ‘amateur-savant’. As a wellto- do stockbroker he was able to invest considerable time and money into studies of nature, first entomology and subsequently diatoms. The latter subject flourished in the late 19th century and, among his international contemporaries, Kinker was regarded as “the only Dutch diatomist of renown”. There is a marked discrepancy between this reputation in his own time and his complete obscurity since, for which there are two reasons; Kinker did not publish, and his collection was not known to exist. Our discovery of the virtually intact Kinker diatom collection after it had vanished for a century can be regarded as a cultural heritage conservation paradigm; the...

Studies in Annonaceae. IV. A taxonomic revision of Tetrameranthus R.E. Fries Naturalis
Westra, L.Y.Th..
The small genus Tetrameranthus R.E. Fries, occurring in the Amazon region, is revised. Two new species are described, in addition to the three already known. Available data still indicate that this genus belongs in Annonaceae, but takes up an isolated position within that family.

Die Segmentierung des Crustaceen-Kopfes und der Cephalothorax der Decapoden Naturalis
Ihle, J.E.W.; Ihle-Landenberg, M.E..

Revision of the Sapotaceae of the Malaysian area in a wider sense. IV. Ganua Pierre ex Dubard Naturalis
Assem, J. van den.
Within the Sapotaceae, the tribe of the Madhuceae presents a very homogeneous group. One point of view is to consider it a single polymorphous genus. The opposite opinion was expressed by Pierre, who distinguished a number of small genera, many on futile characters. Amongst those which stood later criticism is the genus Ganua which was, however, not published by Pierre but by Dubard (1907, 1908a, 201 and 1908b, 407), who adopted Pierre’s Ms names and made use of his extensive annotations. The name Ganua is derived from the word ganu, the native name for latex produced by a tree, “used for falsifying the valuable products of ‘gutta terbu’” (f. Errington de la Croix in schedula; cf p. 389).

Records and descriptions of Microlepidoptera (8) Naturalis
Diakonoff, A..
In continuation of my first revisional paper on the subfamily Olethreutinae dealing with the Lobesia complex (1954) I now present a revision of the genus Bactra Stephens. Chiefly the species from the Malayan region are treated, but also references to some species from other regions are made, as far as these species were available for study. I use this opportunity also to make some amendments to my paper on Meyrick types in the British Museum (1950). Material from New Guinea and of the Sumba Expedition 1948 will be treated in other papers. The material that served for this revision comprises chiefly the collection of the Leiden Museum (indicated below with "L.M."). A small, but valuable addition form materials from museums in the United States. I am...

Enkele opmerkingen over het vermeende voorkomen van Senecio jacobaea L. var. nudus Weston op Sylt en de Deense Waddeneilanden Naturalis
Pedersen, Anfred.
S. jacobaea L. var. nudus Weston sensu Van der Meijden is not recorded from Sylt and the Danish Wadden islands, as GREMMEN & KREMERS (1971) and VAN DER MEIJDEN (1976) mentioned. They confused records of Senecio dunensis (without author), being formerly S. vulgaris L.f. dunensis Knuth (S. vulgaris subsp. denticulatus (O. F. Müller) Sell) with those of S. dunensis Dum. (S. jacobaea L. var. nudus Weston).

On a new Taphozous from Java Naturalis
Jentink, F.A..
Dr. P. N. van Kampen offered some bats to our Museum, all from the neighborhood of Batavia, Java. Among them is a Taphozous, an adult male, with a radiometacarpal pouch and a gular sac. Among the very few Taphozous-species known from the East Indian Region, there only is a single one, presenting these two characteristics combined, viz. Taphozous longimanus Hardwicke, from the Indian Continent. Dobson (Catalogue, p. 385) described a variety from Flores under the name of Taphozous longimanus leucopleurus (by an error in Trouessart’s splendid „Catalogus Mammalium” mentioned as leucopteurus and leucopterus). I registered in the Notes from the Leyden Museum, 1897, p. 54, two specimens, collected by Mr. Goedhuis at Sintang, Borneo, a female and a young male,...

Bemerkungen zu einigen von C. E. Carr in NeuGuinea Gesammelten moosen Naturalis
Arens, P..

Books received by the Rijksherbarium library Naturalis
NN.
The fourth issue of this loose-leaf colour atlas of ectomycorrhizae comprises an extended key to the 83 species of mycorrhizae treated thus far. An extra key is provided for the identification of boreal and temperate European forest trees by the anatomy of their roots. This key is elucidated by 16 pages of good half-tone photographs. In this issue 16 ectomycorrhizae are described and amply and nicely illustrated in colour and black-and-white photographs. In the end in this atlas a total of 200-300 plates are envisaged.

Peter Arnold Florschütz (1923-1976) Naturalis
Greene, Stanley W.; Stafleu, Frans A..
The death of Peter Florschütz, on 27 May 1976, deprived the world of bryology of another of its spiritual leaders. Having fully regained scientific momentum after a period of managerial and organisational involvements connected with the changes in Dutch University life which occurred in the late sixties and early seventies, Florschütz had succeeded in starting a promising school of Utrecht cryptogamists, when, almost abruptly, death ended what would have become his scientific fulfilment. Peter Arnold Florschütz was born in the Hague on 16 March 1923. His father, Gaspard Florschütz, was a chief inspector of the Hague city police and his mother was Elizabeth Philippina Engelina Scharwachter. He is survived by his mother, his...
