METHODOLOGICAL CARE IN THE EVALUATION OF THE LD50 AND OF THE NEUTRALIZATION OF THE LETHAL EFFECT OF Crotalus durissus terrificus VENOM BY THE PLANT Peschiera fuchsiaefolia (APOCYNACEAE) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
BATINA,M. de F. C.; GIGLIO,J. R.; SAMPAIO,S. V..
In the present study, we demonstrate that the volumes in which a given protein mass of Crotalus durissus terrificus venom or of a lyophilized stabilized aqueous extract (LSAE) of Peschiera fuchsiaefolia, an antivenom agent injected intramuscularly, have a decisive influence on the results. The LD50 of C. d. terrificus venom injected i.m. in a final volume of 200µl (2µl/g) (saline solution, 0.9% NaCl) was 180µg/100g rat body weight (p<0.05, 161 to 202µg/100g body weight) and the LD50 of the venom injected i.m. in a volume of 50µl (0.5µl/g) was 120µg/100g body weight (p<0.05, 107 to 134 µg/100g body weight). The reduction of the final volume injected i.m. also required a reduced mass of LSAE necessary to neutralize the lethal effect of C. d....

RADIOPROTECTION: MECHANISMS AND RADIOPROTECTIVE AGENTS INCLUDING HONEYBEE VENOM J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
VARANDA,E. A.; TAVARES,D. C..
Since 1949, a great deal of research has been carried out on the radioprotective action of chemical substances. These substances have shown to reduce mortality when administered to animals prior to exposure to a lethal dose of radiation. This fact is of considerable importance since it permits reduction of radiation-induced damage and provides prophylactic treatment for the damaging effects produced by radiotherapy. The following radioprotection mechanisms were proposed: free radical scavenger, repair by hydrogen donation to target molecules, formation of mixed disulfides, delay of cellular division and induction of hypoxia in the tissues. Radioprotective agents have been divided into four major groups: the thiol compounds, other sulfur compounds,...

TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
BERGDOLL,M. S..
Toxic shock syndrome is a staphylococcal disease caused by toxins produced by the staphylococci, toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 and enterotoxin B. The disease results from staphylococci growing in the vagina with the use of tampons during menstruation, primarily in young women. However, any staphylococcal infection can result in toxic shock syndrome if the staphylococci produce the appropriate toxins and the individual has no antibodies to the toxins. The symptoms can be quite severe, with high fever, low blood pressure, diffuse macular erythroderma, orthostatic dizziness, vomiting and or diarrhea at the onset, severe myalgia, peeling of the skin of the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet after seven to ten days, and death in some cases. The disease...

Histological aspects and protein content of Apis mellifera L. Worker venom glands: the effect of electrical shocks in summer and winter J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
ABREU,R.M.M.; MORAES,R.L.M. SILVA de; MALASPINA,O..
This paper analyzes the summer and winter total protein content of 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 40-day old Apis mellifera L. worker venom glands before (control) and 24 and 96 hours after applying electrical shocks for venom extraction (experimental). During venom extraction, 7-day old workers responded more slowly and weakly to electrical shocks. This response intensifies with age, so that the workers approaching 20 days old respond faster and more aggressively to the shocks. Statistical analysis, using the non-parametric Wilcoxon and Kruskall-Wallis tests and complemented by the Jonckheere test, showed that the protein content varied from one age to another in the experimental group, which was well distinguishable from the values in the control Group in summer...

CHEMICAL COMMUNICATION IN Apis mellifera: TEMPORAL MODULATION OF ALARM BEHAVIORS J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
COSTA,H.; TALORA,D. C.; PALMA,M.S.; CHAUD-NETTO,J..
The effect of pheromones and their chemical analogues in honeybee alarm behaviors was studied in observation boxes. Defensive behaviors, as follows: a) attraction to scent source, b) elevation of wings in "V", c) abdomen elevation, d) abdomen elevation and pumping and e) first leg pair elevation had been temporarily registered when the following compounds were presented: isoamyl alcohol, octyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol, n-butyl acetate, n-octyl acetate, isopentyl acetate, benzyl acetate and 2-heptanone. The results were as follows: 1. the bees elicited some characteristic behaviors when chemical alarm messages were presented, 2. agression (stinging) was not completed with any compound tested, probably because there was not a target (visual stimulus), 3. in...

SUB-LETHAL INJECTION OF COBRA VENOM DECREASES ADENOSINE DEAMINASE, HISTAMINE, AND IgE IN ORGANS OF MICE J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
LIPPS,B. V..
The pharmacological substances adenosine deaminase (ADA), histamine, and IgE are endogenously present in animals. They are implicated in allergy and asthma and detectable in blood serum. This research reports the presence of ADA, histamine, and IgE at varying levels in almost all major organs of mice. This research further reports that intramuscular injection of sub-lethal dose of Naja kaouthia venom disrupted homeostasis and lowered the levels of ADA, histamine, and IgE in the organs of mice. Adult Balb/C male mice were injected with a half lethal dose of the venom. The mice were sacrificed at 2, 8, and 24 hours post-injection and different organs were collected. Organs were homogenized, centrifuged, and the supernatants were assayed for ADA, histamine,...

POPULATION ANALYSIS OF SUSCEPTIBILITY TO PROPOLIS IN REFERENCE STRAINS OF Staphylococcus aureus AND Escherichia coli J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
FERNANDES Jr.,A.; LOPES,C. A. M.; SFORCIN,J. M.; FUNARI,S.R.C..
Susceptibility to several ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) concentrations was tested with the population analysis technique in reference strains of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218). The results of these tests showed that all bacteria were killed by EEP concentrations approximately equal or higher (2.0% v/v- S. aureus; 10.0% v/v - E. coli) than the respective minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC). Regarding the susceptibility to propolis, there was a homogeneity of data with the respective time kill curves showing a clear bactericidal effect during 6 to 9 h of exposition.
