Aquaculture, restocking and stock enhancement as an answer to the scallop fisheries management crisis in the areas of Brest and Saint-Brieuc (Brittany) ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.
Since the beginning of the century, scallop fisheries in France have known successive phases of expansion and recession. Although a system of fishing licences has been implemented, the number of fishermen involved in the scallop fishery has increased and huge investments have been made. The important fishing effortduring this period has induced a serions stock depletion, and output has dropped to less than 2 000 m.t. per year since 1986. Hence, the remunerations of capital and labour have dramatically decreased. As early as 1973, attempts have been made to use aquaculture methods for the management of thisstock, following the successful Japanese model. Because of insufficient amounts of spat available from the wild, hatchery and nursery techniques have...

Microalgues marines : les enjeux de la recherche ArchiMer
Muller-feuga, Arnaud.
Industrial potentialities related to biotechnology of microalgae are examined, highlighting a wide spectrum of applications which concern principally nutrition, health, environment and energy. The french situation of research on microalgae, especially at Ifremer, is assessed, showing that the main axis are fine chemistry, aquaculture, environment, bio-process engineering. It covers the majority of the applications, but leaves in shade certain important aspects such as human food and CO2 fixation. Concerning the general approach, some significant improvements can be expected from a more accurate control of bacteriological and genetic quality of cultures. About the industrial aspects, a national initiative seems in progress. The variety of potential...

Ecotron - Embiez - Utilisation d'engrais agricoles comme source de nutrilites pour la culture massive de quelques algues marines ArchiMer
Guerin-ancey, O.; Maestrini, S.y.; Beker, L..
The use of agricultural manures for marine algae mass production. Thirteen marine algal strains belonging to different taxonomic groups have been grown in different artificial media : two culture solutions used for laboratory experiment (ANTIA and CHENG, 1970) or mass culturing (WALNE, 1970), and enriched sea waters prepared with three mixtures of purified nutrients and nine of agricultural manures Data obtained show that none of the binary or ternary manures support a good algal growth ; cell densities are generally limited to 37 % of those observed with reference medium ("Conway medium"). Mixtures prepared with agricultural nitrate and phosphate (10 N/l P) are more convenient for this purpose ; chelated-iron did not enhance algal growth. Cell densities...

Croissance de jeunes palourdes (Venerupis semidecussata) en nurserie et en mer en fonction des conditions d'élevage ArchiMer
Lucas, Albert.
The japanese palourde Venerupis semidecussata was reared in the Bay of Brest, using hatchery reared spat. Experiments were performed with individuals of lenght 2 to 10 mm raised in a nursery, using raceways with slow running water enriched with unicellular algae, And also with individuals of lenght 8 to 20 mm raised at sea in suspended culture. It was observed that growth depends upon four groups of factors : (1) the functioning and equipment of the raceways, (2) the quantity and quality of the food, (3) the temperature and (4) various physico-chemical factors. When the equipment is satisfactory and when the physico-chemical factors are normal for the species in question, the rate of growth depends essentially on the quantity of food, provided that the...

The multi-use in wind farm projects: more conflicts or a win-win opportunity? ArchiMer
Lacroix, Denis; Pioch, Sylvain.
The pressures on the use of the seashore are steadily rising, not only in developed countries but worldwide. Anthropogenic activity has long impacted the marine continental shelf down to a depth of approximately -200 m. New activities are now affecting this coastal space such as renewable energies, recreational uses and aquaculture in addition to the traditional ones of navigation or fishing. This evolution raises new sources of conflict amongst users which can require state involvement in order to manage the different stakeholders and pressure groups. However, the coastal space still offers a large potential for development for two reasons. Firstly, the physical three dimensional potential of this space enables the whole water column to be used,...

Combining Individual Phenotypes of Feed Intake With Genomic Data to Improve Feed Efficiency in Sea Bass ArchiMer
Besson, Mathieu; Allal, Francois; Chatain, Beatrice; Vergnet, Alain; Clota, Frederic; Vandeputte, Marc.
Measuring individual feed intake of fish in farms is complex and precludes selective breeding for feed conversion ratio (FCR). Here, we estimated the individual FCR of 588 sea bass using individual rearing under restricted feeding. These fish were also phenotyped for their weight loss at fasting and muscle fat content that were possibly linked to FCR. The 588 fish were derived from a full factorial mating between parental lines divergently selected for high (F+) or low (F–) weight loss at fasting. The pedigree was known back to the great grand-parents. A subset of 400 offspring and their ancestors were genotyped for 1,110 SNPs which allowed to calculate the genomic heritability of traits. Individual FCR and growth rate in aquarium were both heritable...

Physiological and biochemical indicators of mussel seed quality in relation to temperatures ArchiMer
Tremblay, Rejean; Landry, Thomas; Leblanc, Neil; Pernet, Fabrice; Barkhouse, Carla; Sevigny, Jean-marie.
The bivalve's aquaculture industry is an important component of the economy in Eastern Canada. Seed collection is an initial and critical activity in most bivalve aquaculture industries including mussel farming in Prince Edward Island, production is entirely dependent on natural spat collection. Although seed supply is not a concern from a quantitative standpoint, there are growing concerns about the quality of natural seed. The general objective of this study was to identify and assess mussel seed quality criteria on the basis of physiological and biochemical status under laboratory and field conditions. The performance, as estimated by metabolic measurements, lipid class composition, multi-locus heterozygosity (MLH) and survival to stressful environment...

Retour sur deux projets de développement en aquaculture outre-mer : leçons pour l’avenir ArchiMer
Lacroix, Denis.
Lessons for the future from two development projects in aquaculture in the French overseas territories. Numerous research and development projects have been launched since the seventies in the French overseas territories. Their aim was to foster new activities in agriculture based on local productions for local markets, notably in the French West Indies (FWI). In this paper we analyze two development projects on the rearing of giant freshwater prawn, one in the FWI and the other in French Guyana, over twenty years after their launching. The purpose of these compared studies is twofold: first to try to understand why a set of relevant technical innovations ended in failure 15 years later; second to identify recommendations in terms of methodology in order...

History, Status, and Future of Oyster Culture in France ArchiMer
Buestel, Dominique; Ropert, Michel; Prou, Jean; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The history of French oyster culture consists of a succession of developmental phases using different species, followed by collapses caused by diseases. The indigenous species Ostrea edulis was replaced first with Crassostrea angulata, then C. gigas. France is now the top producer and consumer of oysters in Europe, producing around 120,000 t of the cupped oyster C. gigas annually, and an additional 1500 t of the flat oyster O. edulis. Cupped oysters are produced all along the French coast from natural and hatchery spat. Various structures are used to collect spat from the wild. After a growing-on period, oysters are Cultivated by three main methods: (1) on-bottom culture in the intertidal zone or in deep water, (2) off-bottom culture in plastic mesh bags...

One of the top priorities of the aquaculture industry is the genetic improvement of economically important traits in fish, such as those related to processing and quality. However, the accuracy of genetic evaluations has been hindered by a lack of data on such traits from a sufficiently large population of animals. The objectives of this study were thus threefold: (i) to estimate genetic parameters of growth-, yield-, and quality-related traits in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using three different phenotyping technologies [invasive and non-invasive: microwave-based, digital image analysis, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)], (ii) to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with these traits, and (iii) to identify candidate genes present...

Feeding responses of hatchery-reared gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) to a commercial diet and natural prey items ArchiMer
Andrew, J; Begout, Marie-laure; Kadri, S; Holm, J; Huntingford, F.
Many fish species have evolved feeding mechanisms and behaviours enabling them to feed on specific prey. However, such mechanisms may not be optimal for feeding on commercial-pelleted diets in aquaculture. Gilthead sea bream chew and occasionally eject pellets or parts of pellets from the mouth when feeding on commercial diets. This may result in an increase in nutritional waste from the intensive culture of this species. In this study we examined the prevalence of this food processing behaviour in two sizes of sea bream, feeding on three types of natural prey items in comparison to a commercial pellet, to give an insight into the circumstances in which excess chewing and ejection of food items from the mouth occurred. These included two hard-textured food...

Mass transfer efficiency of a vacuum airlift-Application to water recycling in aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Barrut, Bertrand; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Champagne, Jean-yves; Grasmick, Alain.
In aquaculture, oxygen transfer and carbon dioxide stripping are the first limiting factors to fish rearing intensification. In this study we measured the O-2 and CO2 mass transfer coefficient (K(L)a) for a vacuum airlift in fresh (<1% salinity) and sea water (35 parts per thousand salinity) recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The airlift was composed of two concentric tubes: an inner riser tube and an external downcomer tube and can be adjusted at three different heights: 2,4 or 6 m. Several types of air injectors were tested, delivering different sizes of bubble swarms depending on their porosity and functioning conditions (low or high injection pressure), with air flows varying from 0 to 80 L min(-1). Experiments were also carried out at...

Variabilité génétique et évaluation génomique de la résistance à la nécrose nerveuse virale de populations sauvages de bar/loup (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Doan, Quoc Khanh.
European seabass is one of the most economic species in aquaculture in Mediterranean areas. Viral nervous necrosis (VNN), a disease affecting at least 70 aquatic species, has become the most serious threat to seabass cultured industry. While numerous studies have been performed in order to control this disease, no simple and effective procedures are available. In this thesis, we question genetic variability and the potential of selective breeding as an opportunity to address thwart this threat. After a general introduction (first chapter) and a deep literature review of nodavirus in aquaculture (second chapter), we explore in the third chapter the genetic variability of resistance of different wild populations of European seabass, namely Northern Atlantic...

Effet des conditions environnementales sur le développement des pathologies à Vibrio dans les élevages de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues.
Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is a developing industry, exclusively based on the species Litopenaeus stylirostris. However, it is subject to mortalities during grow out as observed all over the world. Since 1993, shrimp reared during the cold period are affected by a disease named "syndrome 93". As a consequence, the whole industry has become seasonal and produces essentially during the warm season. The climatic conditions during the periods of transition between the two main seasons could be responsible for an environmental stress and the origin reason for mortality outbreaks. Stocking density is the main risk factor. It increases the probability of the appearance and development of the epizooty in the pond. The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic...

To meet the Convention on Biological Diversity's Aichi Target 11 on marine biodiversity protection and Aichi Target 6 on sustainable fisheries by 2020, as well as the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 on food security and SDG 14 on oceans by 2030, there is an urgent need to rethink how best to reconcile nature conservation and sustainable development. This paper argues for effective governance to support processes that apply principles of sustainable development and an ecosystem approach to decide about economic activities at sea such as aquaculture. It describes opportunities, benefits and synergies between aquaculture and MPAs as a basis for wider debate. The scope is not a comprehensive analysis of aquaculture and MPAs, but rather to present examples...

Modelling spatio-temporal variability of Mytilus edulis (L.) growth by forcing a dynamic energy budget model with satellite-derived environmental data ArchiMer
Thomas, Yoann; Mazurie, Joseph; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bacher, Cedric; Bouget, Jean-francois; Gohin, Francis; Pouvreau, Stephane; Struski, Caroline.
In order to assess the potential of various marine ecosystems for shellfish aquaculture and to evaluate their carrying capacities, there is a need to clarify the response of exploited species to environmental variations using robust ecophysiological models and available environmental data. For a large range of applications and comparison purposes, a non-specific approach based on ‘generic’ individual growth models offers many advantages. In this context, we simulated the response of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis L.) to the spatio-temporal fluctuations of the environment in Mont Saint-Michel Bay (North Brittany) by forcing a generic growth model based on Dynamic Energy Budgets with satellite-derived environmental data (i.e. temperature and food). After a...

Red-drum (Sciaenops ocellata) farming in Martinique: a new prospect for Caribbean marine aquaculture ? ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe.
(not controled OCR) like most other caribbean islands, martinique suffers a reduction in fisheries resources and is now a net importer of seafood products since no major expansion of aquaculture production has been done. nevertheless, this island has numerous assets for marine aquaculture development : tropical clean waters, developed infrastructures and market channels, financial support for research, training and extension due to its tight political and economic connection with france. red drum is a subtropical fish introduced in martinique in 1985 from the south of usa for aquaculture purposes. from 1987 to 1993, ifremer worked on rearing techniques in martiniquan conditions. once the farming techniques were perfected, questions raised about red drum...
