Industrial potentialities related to biotechnology of microalgae are examined, highlighting a wide spectrum of applications which concern principally nutrition, health, environment and energy. The french situation of research on microalgae, especially at Ifremer, is assessed, showing that the main axis are fine chemistry, aquaculture, environment, bio-process engineering. It covers the majority of the applications, but leaves in shade certain important aspects such as human food and CO2 fixation. Concerning the general approach, some significant improvements can be expected from a more accurate control of bacteriological and genetic quality of cultures. The use of agricultural manures for marine algae mass production. Thirteen marine algal strains belonging to different taxonomic groups have been grown in different artificial media : two culture solutions used for laboratory experiment (ANTIA and CHENG, 1970) or mass culturing (WALNE, 1970), and enriched sea waters prepared with three mixtures of purified nutrients and nine of agricultural manures Data obtained show that none of the binary or ternary manures support a good algal growth ; cell densities are generally limited to 37 % of those observed with reference medium ("Conway medium"). The history of French oyster culture consists of a succession of developmental phases using different species, followed by collapses caused by diseases. The indigenous species Ostrea edulis was replaced first with Crassostrea angulata, then C. gigas. France is now the top producer and consumer of oysters in Europe, producing around 120,000 t of the cupped oyster C. gigas annually, and an additional 1500 t of the flat oyster O. edulis. Many fish species have evolved feeding mechanisms and behaviours enabling them to feed on specific prey. However, such mechanisms may not be optimal for feeding on commercial-pelleted diets in aquaculture. Gilthead sea bream chew and occasionally eject pellets or parts of pellets from the mouth when feeding on commercial diets. This may result in an increase in nutritional waste from the intensive culture of this species. In aquaculture, oxygen transfer and carbon dioxide stripping are the first limiting factors to fish rearing intensification. In this study we measured the O-2 and CO2 mass transfer coefficient (K(L)a) for a vacuum airlift in fresh (<1% salinity) and sea water (35 parts per thousand salinity) recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). To meet the Convention on Biological Diversity's Aichi Target 11 on marine biodiversity protection and Aichi Target 6 on sustainable fisheries by 2020, as well as the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 on food security and SDG 14 on oceans by 2030, there is an urgent need to rethink how best to reconcile nature conservation and sustainable development.
