Effect of cultural methods on leaf spot (Mycosphaerella fragariae) and gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) damage in strawberries Organic Eprints
Schmid, Andi; Daniel, Claudia; Weibel, Franco.
Damage of leaf spot, caused by Mycosphaerella fragariae and gray mold also called Botrytis fruit rot, caused by Botrytis cinerea, average fruit weight and yield were evaluated with regard to cultural methods over two years. Leaf spot damage decreased significantly by around 90 % due to leaf sanitation (removal of dead and leaf spot infected leaves in early spring) and by 50 % due to plantation in a one-row-system instead of a two-row-system. When all leaves including the healthy green ones were removed in early spring average fruit weight decreased significantly by 10 %. Fruit sanitation - the third treatment – did not influence any of the measured parameters. Neither leaf sanitation nor fruit sanitation (removal of damaged fruits during harvest) reduced...

Sulfur and baking-quality of breadmaking wheat Organic Eprints
Hagel, Ingo.
It is well known in biological science that all factors applied to living organisms (light, water, warmth, fertilizers etc.) show an optimum, when their input is increased. Healthy organisms and sus-tainable systems are, on the long run, only achieved when care is taken not to destroy this equilibrium of factors producing an optimum. With regard to the baking quality of wheat breeders and cereal scientists obviously failed to achieve this aim by breeding their cultivars on the background of ample S depositions in the ecosystems. They (involuntarily) selected plants showing definite characteristics of S deficiency (higher proportions of HMW-glutenin, stronger gluten and dough) even under conditions of ample S supply. I suppose they also selected plants with...

Efficacy of Armicarb (potassium bicarbonate) against scab and sooty blotch on apples Organic Eprints
Tamm, Lucius; Amsler, Thomas; Schärer, Hansjakob; Refardt, Matthias.
A novel formulation of potassium bicarbonate (Armicarb) was evaluated in 2004 and 2005 as agent against apple scab (3 field trials) and sooty blotch (2 field trials). Armicarb controlled scab equally well as the reference treatments sulphur and copper. Armicarb showed also excellent activity against sooty blotch. However, potential side-effects such as lenticell spot development need further investigation. At present, potassium bicarbonate is considered by the Swiss registration authorities as non-toxic to humans and in consequence, no residue levels have been specified. Armicarb has very interesting properties as a plant protection agent and its composition and risk profile are expected to fulfil the IFOAM standards for acceptance of novel plant...

Schwarz, Johannes; Weihrauch, Florian.

Soil nitrogen in an organic apple orchard Organic Eprints
GIRARD, T.; SIMON, S.; CORROYER, N.; FAURIEL, J.; BUSSI, C..
Introduction The lack of vigour of an organic apple orchard (Smoothee cultivar) planted in 1994 pointed out the management of tree nitrogen supply in this orchard. Serious damages due to Dysaphis plantaginea, the rosy aphid, were also noted on trees. As tree vigour and therefore aphid population levels are related to nitrogen nutrition, the monitoring of soil nitrogen availability was necessary to analyse the causes of these problems. Besides, the aim was to optimise the orchard organic nitrogen fertilisation. Materials and methods From 1994 to 1998, the fertilisation management mainly consisted in compost supply (10 t.ha-1). From 1999 to 2001, autumn compost supply was reduced to 5 t.ha-1, complemented with organic quickly mineralised fertilisers in...

Entomovektortehnoloogiast tuleneva lisatolmeldamise ja hahkhallituse tõrjumise efektiivsus aedmaasika sortidel ’Polka’ ja ’Sonata’ Organic Eprints
Karise, Reet; Muljar, Riin; Mänd, Marika.
Aedmaasikas on maailmas üks enam kasvatatavaid marjakultuure. Kuigi enamik aedmaasika Fragaria x ananassa sortidest on isetolmlemisvõimelised, aitab risttolmlemine kaasa suuremate ja kõrgema kvaliteediga viljade moodustumisele (Klatt jt., 2014). Puudulikult tolmeldatud õitest arenenud viljad on sageli ebakorrapärase kujuga ja väiksemad. Lisaks on hästi tolmeldatud viljad ka paremini värvunud, tugevama viljalihaga ning säilivad korjamisjärgselt kauem (Klatt jt., 2014). Aedmaasika põhiliseks kahjustajaks on hahkhallitus, Botrytis cinerea (Legard jt., 2000), mille tõrjumisel on sünteetiliste preparaatide kõrval osutunud efektiivseks ka mullaseen Gliocladium catenulatum.

Sustainable apple breedings needs sustainable marketing and management Organic Eprints
Weber, M..
Apple breeding programmes are currently in the middle of transition in terms of ownership and management. Until now most of them were funded by the public. Breeding took place by traditional methods since decades in a very sustainable way to develop better apple varieties. Today, increasing loss of national boundaries and globalisation, less interest by national bodies and institutions and rising cost levels for high tech breeding methods entire programmes are nowadays urged to look for new sustainable co- or self-financing business models in order to continue their work. The paper explains through financial calculations how risk can be split by all partners and how the supply chain can be developed further into a value chain by using a collective...

Combined production of broilers and fruits Organic Eprints
Lindhard Pedersen, H.; Olsen, A.; Pedersen, B.; Korsgaard, M.; Horsted, K..
Combined production of broilers and fruit trees is a subject often discussed in organic fruit production in Denmark. Very little research has been carried out on this type of production system. In organic production in Denmark, nearly no pesticides are allowed, so the need for alternative pest control is large. Apple sawfly (Hoplocampa testudinea) and pear midge (Contarinia pyrivora) cause big crop losses in apples and pears respectively, in unsprayed organic fruit production. Both insects infest fruitlets and cause these to drop prematurely after which the pests pupate in the topsoil. In the present experiment a research orchard with the varieties ‘Discovery’ and ‘Conference’ were used as outdoor area for broilers to minimise the population of...

Effects of birch tar oils on soil organisms and plants Organic Eprints
Hagner, Marleena; Pasanen, Tiina; Lindqvist, Bengt; Lindqvist, Isa; Tiilikkala, Kari; Penttinen, Olli-Pekka; Setälä, Heikki.
The use of birch tar oil (BTO) is a new innovation in plant and animal protection working against various weeds, harmful insects and rodents. Due to its novelty as a biocide/repellent/plant protection product, no comprehensive information on the effects of BTO on non-target soil organisms is available. In this study we examined the impact of BTO on non-target soil organisms (enchytraeids, nematodes and soil microbes) and plants using laboratory toxicity tests and field experiments. In addition, we determined the LC50 value of BTO to the earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa and the EC50 value of BTO to the offspring production of the collembolan Folsomia candida. The effects of BTO on soil fauna were mostly insignificant. BTO seemed to be detrimental to the...

Migration und Ausbreitung der Kirschfruchtfliege innerhalb von Obstanlagen – Möglichkeit der biologischen Bodenbehandlung Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Wyss, Eric.
The European cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi) is the only pest insect which makes a insecticide treatment of cherry fruit necessary. With regard of residue free cherries a biocontrol method for R. cerasi by soil applications seems attractive. However, soil treatments can only be effective if the migration of flies is low. In order to examine the potential of soil treatments and to understand the dispersal behaviour of R. cerasi in orchards, experiments using nettings to cover the soil were conducted. The experiments were arranged in commercial, organically managed orchards. The nettings reduced fruit infestation by 90%. In addition, it was shown that the flies move only very short distances (less than 5 m) within orchards. Thus, soil treatments...

B. Anbau resistente Sorten.

Predicting spring barley yield from variety-specific yield potential, disease resistance and straw length, and from environment-specific disease loads and weed pressure Organic Eprints
Østergård, H.; Kristensen, K.; Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hansen, P.K.; Hovmøller, M.S..
Abstract For low-input crop production, well-characterised varieties increase the possibilities of managing diseases and weeds. This analysis aims at developing a framework for analyzing grain yield using external varietal information about disease resistance, weed competitiveness and yield potential and quantifying the impact of susceptibility grouping and straw length scores (as a measure for weed competitiveness) for predicting spring barley grain yield under variable biotic stress levels. The study comprised 52 spring barley varieties and 17 environments, i.e., combinations of location, growing system and year. Individual varieties and their interactions with environments were analysed by factorial regression of grain yield on external variety...
