Babesia bovis is the most virulent Babesia organism, resulting in a high mortality rate in cattle. The genetic diversity of B. bovis merozoite surface antigens (MSAs), such as MSA-1, MSA-2b, and MSA-2c, might be linked to altered immune profiles in the host animals. The present study aimed to develop type-specific PCR assays for Asian msa-1 genotypes, thereby re-analyzing the genetic diversity of msa-1 in Sri Lanka, Mongolia, and Vietnam. Specific primers were designed for nine Asian msa-1 genotypes, which had been detected based on the phylogeny constructed using msa-1 gene sequences retrieved from the GenBank database. Specificity of the type-specific PCR assays was confirmed using plasmids containing the inserts of msa-1 gene fragments that represent... |

Babesia bovis, an intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite, causes severe clinical disease in cattle worldwide. The genetic diversity of parasite antigens often results in different immune profiles in infected animals, hindering efforts to develop immune control methodologies against the B. bovis infection. In this study, we analyzed the genetic diversity of the merozoite surface antigen-1 (msa-1) gene using 162 B. bovis-positive blood DNA samples sourced from cattle populations reared in different geographical regions of Thailand. The identity scores shared among 93 msa-1 gene sequences isolated by PCR amplification were 43.5-100%, and the similarity values among the translated amino acid sequences were 42.8-100%. Of 23 total clades detected in our... |

The polychaetes communities structure and functioning of the Cap Bon peninsula (Northeast coast of Tunisia), were analyzed from 52 stations from Sidi Daoud to Menzel Horr. The faunistic study reveals the presence of 238 polychaetes species among which 86 records are newly reported for the Tunisian coasts. The total number of polychaetes listed in Tunisia rises to 375 species. The polychaete community structure at the sites was examined by multivariate methods. five main polychaetes communities were identified in the study area, the sandy sediment community (SS), the muddy sediments community (SV), the coarse sediment community (SG), the fine-muddy sediment community (SFV) and the Heterogeneous sediments community (HS). These communities are distributed... |

Most of the fishes living in the lagoons do not spend all their time in these brackishwaters. Sometimes, they go back to the river to spawn as in the case of freshwater fishes like Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus. Others like marine fishes (e.g., Ethmalosa jimbriata) feed or reproduce in lagoons for a time. Even true lagoon fishes are generally able to live in freshwater and/or in marine water. This is the case for two brackishwater tilapias, Sarotherodon melanotheron and Tilapia guineensis. Both are present in lagoons from Senegal to Congo (formerly Zaire). S. melanotheron is present in marine water near Dakar, Senegal, and in some freshwater lakes in Cote d'Ivoire. 1: guineensis is also present in freshwater in Cote d'Ivoire. |

The hamlets are a group of vividly colored fish species of the Serranidae family differentiated only by the color pattern of the body. Although there are divergent views about hamlet taxonomy, experimental and field observations have shown a strong assortative mating, justifying a species status for the different color morphs. Here we analyze the level of evolutionary divergence among six species in respect of mitochondrial DNA, with a view to contrasting the pattern observed with color partitions and previous results obtained with isozymes. The estimated molecular distance among species was low and of the same magnitude as nucleotide diversity within species. Consequently, the net distance and hence the time of divergence between taxa was virtually zero... |

P. elliotii var. elliottii is the second most planted fast growing tree species in Brazilian subtropics for wood and resin production. The objective of this work was to predict genetic values of fast growing individual trees. A trial was established in a randomized complete blocks design involving 76 treatments, 75 open pollinated progenies from a clonal seed orchard and a commercial progeny as control, in a 3 m x 3 m spacing. Total heights of all individuals were measured at 1, 2, and 3 years old and also stem diameter at 1.3 m height- dbh at 3 years old. Deviance analysis was performed by using Selegen-REML/BLUP software and genetic parameters were estimated. Significant variation was detected among progenies. Estimates of narrow-sense individual... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to quantify the genetic variability of 213 conilon coffee accessions of the Robusta Tropical cultivar, based on chemical characteristics related to the quality of green coffee beans, as well as to identify promising accessions for the breeding program of irrigated conilon coffee in the Brazilian Cerrado. The chemical characteristics evaluated were: protein and caffeine contents, total soluble solids and total lipids, ether extract, pH, and total titratable acidity. The data were subjected to the principal component analysis and cluster analysis based on the similarities observed within the first two principal components using the minimum variance method (Wards) and, as a measure of similarity, the Euclidean... |

This study was carried out to assess the genetic variability of ten "cagaita" tree (Eugenia dysenterica) populations in Southeastern Goiás. Fifty-four randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) loci were used to characterize the population genetic variability, using the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA). A phiST value of 0.2703 was obtained, showing that 27.03% and 72.97% of the genetic variability is present among and within populations, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) among the genetic distances matrix (1 - Jaccard similarity index) and the geographic distances were estimated, and a strong positive correlation was detected. Results suggest that these populations are differentiating through a stochastic process, with restricted... |

The objective of this work was to standardize a semiautomated method for genotyping soybean, based on universal tail sequence primers (UTSP), and to compare it with the conventional genotyping method that uses electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels. Thirty soybean cultivars were genotypically characterized by both methods, using 13 microsatellite loci. For the UTSP method, the number of alleles (NA) was 50 (2-7 per marker) and the polymorphic information content (PIC) ranged from 0.40 to 0.74. For the conventional method, the NA was 38 (2-5 per marker) and the PIC varied from 0.39 to 0.67. The genetic dissimilarity matrices obtained by the two methods were highly correlated with each other (0.8026), and the formed groups were coherent with the phenotypic... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the catabolic gene diversity for the bacterial degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons in anthropogenic dark earth of Amazonia (ADE) and their biochar (BC). Functional diversity analyses in ADE soils can provide information on how adaptive microorganisms may influence the fertility of soils and what is their involvement in biogeochemical cycles. For this, clone libraries containing the gene encoding for the alpha subunit of aromatic ring-hydroxylating dioxygenases (α-ARHD bacterial gene) were constructed, totaling 800 clones. These libraries were prepared from samples of an ADE soil under two different land uses, located at the Caldeirão Experimental Station - secondary forest (SF) and agriculture (AG) -, and the... |

Studies on the impact of Eucalyptus spp. on Brazilian soils have focused on soil chemical properties and isolating interesting microbial organisms. Few studies have focused on microbial diversity and ecology in Brazil due to limited coverage of traditional cultivation and isolation methods. Molecular microbial ecology methods based on PCR amplified 16S rDNA have enriched the knowledge of soils microbial biodiversity. The objective of this work was to compare and estimate the bacterial diversity of sympatric communities within soils from two areas, a native forest (NFA) and an eucalyptus arboretum (EAA). PCR primers, whose target soil metagenomic 16S rDNA were used to amplify soil DNA, were cloned using pGEM-T and sequenced to determine bacterial diversity.... |
