Chronic intermittent stress exposure and access to grass silage interact differently in their effect on behaviour, gastric health and stress physiology of entire or castrated male growing finishing pigs Organic Eprints
Holinger, Mirjam; Früh, Barbara; Stoll, Peter; Graage, Robert; Wirth, Sandra; Bruckmaier, Rupert; Prunier, Armelle; Kreuzer, Michael; Hillmann, Edna.
Entire male pigs display more aggressive and sexual behaviour. This might cause a condition of chronic stress and impair their welfare. In order to assess chronic stress in entire and castrated male pigs, as well as effects of providing grass silage as occupational and feed material on behaviour and health, we carried out a 2 × 2 × 2-factorial experiment with 147 growing-finishing pigs. Factors investigated were castration (entire/castrated), chronic intermittent social stress exposure (yes/no) and access to grass silage (yes/no), as well as their interactions. The stress exposure treatment consisted of repeated short-term confrontations and separations. We recorded different behavioural variables, circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol, response to an ACTH...

Untersuchungen zu Euterinfektionen in der Frühlaktation bei Milchziegen Organic Eprints
Stuhr, Tanja; Aulrich, Karen; Barth, Kerstin; Knappstein, Karin.

Schäffer, M.; Rieger, A.; Knubben-Schweizer, G..
This study about fasciolosis in Bavarian dairy farms is part of the project “Tackling the parasitological challenges in organic ruminant farming systems (ProPara)” (Core Organic Plus). The first aim of this project was to analyse the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica in Bavarian organic dairy farms in comparison to conventional farms. For this purpose, 366 bulk tank milk (BTM) samples of Bavarian organic cattle herds and 366 BTM samples of Bavarian conventional farms were collected in October 2015. Seroprevalence of each BTM sample was estimated using the `IDEXX Fasciola hepatica Antibody Test Kit`. The second aim of this project was to identify risk factors for the transmission of F. hepatica, which are important especially for organic cattle farming. In...

Effects of free-range and confined housing on joint health in a herd of fattening pigs Organic Eprints
Etterlin, Pernille Engelsen; Ytrehus, Bjørnar; Lundeheim, Nils; Heldmer, Eva; Österberg, Julia; Ekman, Stina.
Background Free-range housing, in which pigs have access to both indoor and outdoor areas, is mandatory in organic pig production in Europe, but little is known about the effects of this housing on joint health in pigs. A high level of joint condemnations at slaughter has been reported in organic free-range pigs in Sweden, compared with pigs raised in conventional confined housing. We hypothesised that biomechanical forces imposed on the joints of pigs that range freely promote the development of osteochondrosis and lead to joint condemnation. We compared the prevalence of osteochondrosis and other joint lesions (e.g. arthritis, traumatic) in the elbow and hock joints of 91 crossbred Hampshire (Yorkshire×Landrace) fattening pigs that were housed in a...

Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Nutzung des Unterwuchses von hängigen Streuobstwiesen durch Ziegen Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold.

Evaluation of soil microfungi as biological control agents against ascarid eggs Organic Eprints
Sundar, Thapa; Meyling, Nicolai V.; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Mejer, Helena.
Thick-shelled ascarid eggs have been reported to remain infective in the environment for several years, thus posing a prolonged risk of infection to animals and/or humans. The following in vitro study was therefore conducted to evaluate the negative impact of two species of naturally occuring soil microfungi (Pochonia chlamydosporia and Paecilomyces lilacinus), on the viability of Ascaridia galli, Toxocara canis and Ascaris suum eggs. Approximately 150 fresh eggs of individual ascarid species were embryonated on a 2% water agar in Petri dishes with or without a fungus (P. chlamydospria or P. lilacinus). On days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 post experimental set up (p.s.), the viability of the eggs in each experimental group was evaluated (destructive...

The development of the gut microbiota in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is affected by first feeding and diet type Organic Eprints
Ingerslev, Hans-Christian; Jørgensen, Louise von Gersdorff; Strube, M. Lenz; Larsen, N.; Dalsgaard, Inger; Boye, Mette; Madsen, Lone.
An influence of the intestinal microbiota in connection to first-feeding of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry was demonstrated using Illumina HiSeq sequencing. The period from the end of yolk-sac feeding and until seven weeks post first-feeding was examined after administration of either a marine- or plant based diet with or without the probiont Pediococcus acidilactici. Before first feeding the main part of the sequence reads grouped to the genus Sediminibacterium probably originating from the surrounding water. The microbial abundance and diversity increased after first-feeding and the microbiota then changed towards Firmicutes phylum dominance for plant based fed fish and towards dominance of phylum Proteobacteria for the marine fed fish. After...

Peracetic Acid Products Expand Sanitizing, Organic Water Treatment Options Organic Eprints
Pedersen, Lars-Flemming; Jokumsen, Alfred; Larsen, Villy J.; Henriksen, Niels Henrik.
Peracetic acids can be used as sanitizers to control water quality in aquaculture systems. As an alternative to formalin, chloramine-T or copper sulphate, PAA has strong anti-microbial effects, degrades quickly and is relatively safe to use. Its mode of action and associated rapid decay can make optimizing treatment protocols a challenge. Continuous low-dose applications seem to be a promising solution. PAA is among the few disinfectants approved for organic aquaculture

Breeding and feeding for animal health and welfare in organic livestock systems (4th NAHWOA Workshop) Organic Eprints
content: Part A: Breeding for animal health and welfare in organic livestock systems Part B: Feeding for animal health and welfare in organic livestock systems Part C: Posters and additional papers The theme of the 4 th NAHWOA Workshop was Breeding and feeding for animal health and welfare in organic livestock systems . According to most organic certification body standards and the current EU legislation, breeding and feeding are the two cornerstones of health and welfare in organic livestock systems. It is apparent form these proceedings that the concept of organic breeds or organic breeding is far from clear and that a lot of work needs to be carried out before 2005, when the current EU derogation allowing sourcing of livestock from...
