Karyotype description of Pomacea patula catemacensis (Caenogastropoda, Ampullariidae), with an assessment of the taxonomic status of Pomacea patula Biocell

Mitotic chromosomes of the freshwater snail Pomacea patula catemacensis (Baker 1922) were analyzed on gill tissue of specimens from the type locality (Lake Catemaco, Mexico). The diploid number of chromosomes is 2n = 26, including nine metacentric and four submetacentric pairs; therefore, the fundamental number is FN = 52. No sex chromosomes could be identified. The same chromosome number and morphology were already reported for P. flagellata, i.e., the other species of the genus living in Mexico. The basic haploid number for family Ampullariidae was reported to be n = 14 in the literature; so, its reduction to n = 13 is probably an apomorphy of the Mexican Pomacea snails. Karyological and electrophoretic differences between Pomacea flagellata and P. patula catemacensis: Caenogastropoda: Ampullariidae Biocell

The widespread Mexican apple snail Pomacea flagellata (Say 1827) and the strictly endemic "tegogolo" P. patula catemacensis (Baker 1922) (restricted to Lake Catemaco), are the only known American Ampullariidae that have haploid complements n=13. Pomacea patula catemacensis has suffered a critical reduction in abundance due to immoderate fishing for human consumption. Chromosome slides were obtained from colchicine-injected Pomacea snails collected from nine locations along the coastal zone of the Gulf of Mexico, including Lake Catemaco, for use in principal component analysis (PCA). An alternative species taxonomy of the birds of Mexico Biota Neotropica

Extensive debate has surrounded the application of alternative species concepts in Ornithology. The biological species concept (BSC) and phylogenetic species concept (PSC) have typically been set in opposition, with extensive debate on the relative merits of each. An alternative is the evolutionary species concept (ESC), which offers a perspective similar to that of the PSC, yet with several significant differences. To date, no major avifauna has been examined and compared among taxonomic viewpoints. Inventory of benthic marine and estuarine algae and Cyanobacteria for Tabasco, México Biota Neotropica

Abstract Studies of benthic marine and estuarine algae as well as Cyanobacteria are in their early stages in the littoral of the state of Tabasco. Sixty seven taxa of seaweeds are currently known from Tabasco. The inventory of these organisms was made based on samples obtained in six localities, three of them in marine and three in estuarine environments. We found 147 species and subspecific taxa with Rhodophyta having the greatest number with 84, followed by Chlorophyta 44, and finally Phaeophyceae 19. In addition, the 26 species of Cyanobacteria collected are recorded for the first time for the coast of Tabasco since there are no previous reports. Notes on Vampyressa thyone (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae): distribution, genetics and hypopigmentation Biota Neotropica

Abstract: The frugivorous bats of the genus Vampyressa include five neotropical species, and some of them are considered relatively rare and uncommonly encountered. The northernmost distribution of this genus is in Mexico where only one species, the monotypic Vampyressa thyone, is found. Here, we report the Northwesternmost record for this species, extending its distribution range to the state of Guerrero, Mexico. This record extends the limit of the species distribution by more than 153 km. We also compared this specimens with other V. thyone, and using mitochondrial cytochrome-b sequences we detected three geographic clades within the species. Four seasons abundance changes of Zalophus californianus californianus (Lesson 1828), Allen, 1880, in the Gulf of California, Mexico BABT

This paper describes for the first time the relative abundance, population structure and numeric variation of California sea lions in the Gulf of California, Mexico, during four different seasons. The relative abundance estimates varied from the highest 17,162 sea lions in July of 1990 (summer) to a minimum 7,470 in February of 1992 (winter), representing a reduction of 10,000 sea lions. Hypotheses about the migration of part of the population to the Pacific Ocean were compared and discussed against their residency inside the Gulf, and seasonal dispersion of individuals along this inner sea.

Changes in lizard abundance on protected versus grazed desert scrub in Baja California Sur, Mexico BABT

The changes in abundance of three species of lizards were determined and compared between grazed and ungrazed desert scrub near La Paz, in the Cape Region, Baja California Sur, Mexico, from April 1992 to March 1993. A total of 54 censuses were taken of these species over two transect systems, one inside and one outside livestock enclosure. Urosaurus nigricaudus were negatively affected by the grazing activities, but Uta stansburiana exhibited an apparently positive effect by such activities. Cnemidophorus hyperythrus population apparently showed no effect by the livestock grazing. The paper discusses the possible relationship between the microhabitat specificity of each species and their population number individuals response.

Abstract Background Clostridium difficile infections caused by the NAP1/B1/027 strain are more severe, difficult to treat, and frequently associated with relapses. Methods A case–control study was designed to examine a C. difficileinfection (CDI) outbreak over a 12-month period in a Mexican hospital. The diagnosis of toxigenic CDI was confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction, PCR (Cepheid Xpert C. difficile/Epi). Results During the study period, 288 adult patients were evaluated and 79 (27.4%) patients had confirmed CDI (PCR positive). Identification of co-infection by rotavirus and parvovirus in dogs with gastroenteritis in Mexico BJM

ABSTRACT This is the first report on circulating canine rotavirus in Mexico. Fifty samples from dogs with gastroenteritis were analyzed used polymerase chain reaction and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in order to identify parvovirus and rotavirus, respectively; 7% of dogs were infected with rotavirus exclusively, while 14% were co-infected with both rotavirus and parvovirus; clinical signs in co-infected dogs were more severe.
