The Colorado Potato Beetle is one of the most important pests of potatoes. The effect of various plant protection products based on neem (NeemAzal-T/S), pyrethrum/rape oil (Spruzit Neu) and Bacillus thuringiensis - B.t.t. (Novodor FC) against this pest has been compared in a field experiment from 2004 until 2006. The combined application of neem and B.t.t.-product have reduced the number of Colorado Potato Beetle larvae as well as the losses of plant material by feed of the beetle larvae significantly. In three years of field experiments the application of pyrethrum/rape oil has shown no significant effect to reduce the number of Colorado Potato Beetles. |

Romania has tradition and a great potential to improve its production of medicinal and spice plants. Whether this important potential is used within the organic farming system, this will create new opportunities for small farmers. Medicinal and spice plants grown within the organic farming system could have a significant contribution to the following aspects: clean agriculture, new technologies, healthy products, environmental protection and conservation of the natural resources. In Romania, there are possibilities to produce and obtained organic medicinal and spice plants products. |

Since 1989-90, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) has been classified as the most harmful insect for table grapes after Lobesia botrana ( Den et Schiff.)Cultivar “Italia”, the most economically-relevant table grapes variety in Apulia, is susceptible to Frankliniella occidentalis which induces typical halo spots symptoms. Many conventional and IPM control methods have been developed to limit the attacks of this pest. In contrast little has been made for the biological control in the vineyard. This present work aims on one hand to verify the damage of Frankliniella in the presence of attractive blue flowers of Phacelia tanacetifolia, and on the other to evaluate the predation efficiency of the predator Orius. In that context, Phacelia tanacetifolia,... |

Autumn applications of sulphur – a new approach to control the pear leaf blister mite Eriophyes pyri. Abstract: The pear leaf blister mite can cause severe damage to pear leaves and young fruits in some regions. Due to hidden living inside leaf blisters, the mites are largely protected against the impact of plant protecting agents. Until now, treatments with mineral oil or rape oil in early spring, during the time when the mites leave their hibernation sites under the bud scales to invade the young leaves and blossoms, are the only possibility to control these mites in Swiss organic fruit growing. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of sulphur, mineral oil and Surround®WP applied after harvest during the time, when the mites leave their... |

The codling moth, Cydia pomonellaL. (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) is the key pest in apple growing worldwide. Its increasing resistance against various insecticides, including granulosevirus based plant products, initiate the search for supporting tools for natural control, e.g. the activity of parasitoids. The Chelonine species Ascogaster quadridentata, an egg-larval parasitoid, does not host-feed, but requires sustainable access to sugar resources for nutrition. In the framework of the European CoreOrganic Plus project EcoOrchard (http://coreorganicplus.org/researchprojects/ ecoorchard/)weestablished flowering strips in the rows between trees with the aim to support natural enemies. In adjacent laboratory tests we explored which kind of flowering plants and... |

In the absence of effective control measures, the strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus rubi), the European tarnished plant bug (Lygus rugulipennis) and the raspberry beetle (Byturus tomentosus) cause large (10 - >80%) losses in yield and quality in organically grown strawberry (A. rubi and L .rugulipennis) and raspberry (A. rubi and B. tomentosus). In this project the natural semiochemical mechanisms of sexual attraction and host plant finding of these key pests will be exploited to develop effective semiochemical traps for their management through mass trapping. Attractive lures will be combined into a single multitrap for economic management of these pests simultaneously in each crop. This will be one of the first approaches to pest management of... |

Cruciferous plants with high contents of glucosinolates can be used to control soilborne diseases. During the degradation of such plants, the glucosinolates are transformed into isothio- and thiocyanates. These molecules are volatile and toxic, therefore, this method is called biofumigation. In this context, the efficacy of two brown mustard (Brassica juncea) and one canola (Brassica napus) cultivars to reduce the number of Verticillium dahliae microsclerotia was tested in pot trials. Verticillium dahliae is the causal agent of verticillium wilt of a large number of important crops. Microsclerotia are the surviving structures of V. dahliae in the soil. A strong decrease of the number of microsclerotia was observed using the high... |
