Japanese Consumer Demand for Dairy Products AgEcon
Campo, Isabelle Schluep; Beghin, John C..
We econometrically estimate consumer demand for dairy products in Japan using time series data for 1960-2003. We identify economic, cultural, and demographic forces that have been influencing dairy consumption patterns. We use the Almost Ideal (AI) Demand System by Deaton and Muellbauer and its variant, the Semiflexible Almost Ideal (SAI) Demand System developed by Moschini to impose concavity locally by reducing the rank of the Hessian of the expenditure function. We estimate three specifications: a full system comprising of four dairy products (fluid milk, powder milk, cheese, and butter), and an allother-goods aggregate; a subsystem for food made of four dairy goods and an all-other-food aggregate; and a sub-system of the four dairy products. The...

Drivers of Resident Support for Animal Care Oriented Ballot Initiatives AgEcon
Tonsor, Glynn T.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Recent high profile incidents and public debates in the United States have highlighted the increasing interest residents have regarding animal rearing and handling practices. This paper examines resident support for national legislation that mirrors Proposition 2, which in November 2008 passed in California. Results suggest perceptions regarding animal welfare information accuracy of livestock industry and consumer groups are particularly influential determinants of voting behavior and demand. The analysis also suggests residents may not fully appreciate price or tax implications when supporting additional animal welfare legislation. Implications for livestock industry and policy makers are provided along with suggestions for additional research.

Forecasting World Crop Yields as Probability Distributions AgEcon
Ferris, John N..
Traditionally, agricultural forecasts, whether for the coming year or several years into the future, have been based on assumptions of normal weather and trend crop yields. That weather is seldom normal and that yields seldom fit trends are well recognized. However, relatively little attention has been given to projecting crop yields stochastically even though computer capacity and software programs are available to do so. One reason is that the task is more challenging than to assign standard deviations to various crop yields and simulate normal distributions using random number generators. For one, deviations of crop yields from trends may be correlated especially if the locations of the crops overlap such as is the case with US corn and soybeans. To...

The Impact of Labeling Practices on Perceived Quality of GM Food Products: A Revealed Preferences Approach AgEcon
Scatasta, Sara; Wesseler, Justus; Hobbs, Jill E..
This article contributes to the ongoing discussion about the impact of different labeling practices on the quality of genetically modified (GM) food products as perceived by the consumer. Thus far, many studies have adopted a stated preferences approach, finding that consumers have different willingness to pay for GM and non-GM products. This article offers an empirically tractable theoretical model that can be used easily to investigate the impact of GM labeling practices on the perceived quality of GM food products, making use of market data.

Organic Farming and the New CAP - Results for the Austrian Agricultural Sector AgEcon
Schmid, Erwin; Sinabell, Franz.
In 2003, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has been reformed and decoupling direct payments from farm output is one of its core elements. We estimate the likely responses in organic product supply due to the reform at regional and sectoral levels. In addition, we analyse how the new programme for rural development, to be implemented in 2007, might affect organic farming. Our results show that organic farming will become more attractive after the 2003 CAP reform in Austria. Our results support the view that interactions among agri-environmental measures affect farmers' choice to maintain, abandon or adopt organic farming practices.

On the Theory and Practice of Water Regulation AgEcon
Tsur, Yacov.
We study water regulation for a schematic water economy representing a wide range of real world situations. A water policy has inter- and intra-temporal components. The first determines the limits on extractions from the naturally replenished sources, given the stochastic nature of recharge processes associated with uncertain precipitation. The intra-temporal regulation is concerned mainly with the allocating of the extracted and produced water among the end-users. The prices that implement the optimal intra-temporal allocation are derived. Regulation issues associated with cost recovery and asymmetric information are discussed.

Seasonal Asymmetric Price Transmission in Ghanaian Tomato Markets: Adapting Johansen’s Estimation Method AgEcon
Amikuzuno, Joseph; Ihle, Rico.
We assess market integration and price transmission of perishable agricultural produce in Sub-Saharan Africa by studying Ghanaian tomato markets which are characterized by pronounced seasonality in production and trade flows. We analyse the tomato markets of Ghana by simultaneously regarding its five most important markets, Navrongo, Techiman, Kumasi, Tamale and Accra, in a multivariate asymmetric price transmission framework. The estimation of the model is based on a unique dataset and on a modified version of the Johansen estimation procedure which is suitable for estimating such multivariate models. We estimate the price transmission parameters for four regimes which are a combination of the seasonal patterns in trade flows and asymmetries in the...

The Sustainability of Cotton Production in China and in Australia: Comparative Economic and Environmental Issues AgEcon
Zhao, Xufu; Tisdell, Clement A..
After providing some background about the importance of cotton as a fibre, this article provides information about the global relevance of China’s and Australia’s cotton industries and compares the structure and other significant features of their cotton industries. Attention is given to trends in overall cotton yields and the volume of production of cotton globally, in Australia, and in China as indicators of the sustainability of cotton supplies. Some simple economic theory is applied to indicate the relationship between market conditions and the sustainability of global cotton supplies. Then the environmental and economic factors that challenge the sustainability of Australian cotton production are outlined and analysed and this is done subsequently for...

The Impact of Coordination of Production and Marketing Strategies on Price Behavior: Evidence from the Idaho Potato Industry AgEcon
Bolotova, Yuliya; McIntosh, Christopher S.; Muthusamy, Kalamani; Patterson, Paul E..
High potato price volatility, decreasing demand for fresh potatoes and prices below the cost of production led to a decision of a number of Idaho potato growers to organize the United Fresh Potato Growers of Idaho, a marketing cooperative. The programs and strategies of the cooperative target both the production and marketing of fresh potatoes in Idaho. To evaluate the effectiveness of the programs implemented by the cooperative, we examine the level and volatility of fresh potato prices during two periods: before the cooperative was organized and when the cooperative is in the market. We find empirical evidence suggesting that fresh potato prices were higher and less volatile during the period when the cooperative was in the market.

International Trade and Competitiveness of Lake Victoria Fillets in the EU AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew.
Given the importance of EU demand for chilled fish fillets to the exporting sectors in Tanzania and Uganda, this study estimated the EU’s import demand for fillets by country of origin to assess the competitiveness of exporters. Results imply that prices in Tanzania and Uganda had an insignificant impact on total imports expenditures in the EU. Conditional and unconditional cross-price effects indicated that exports from Lake Victoria did not compete with exports from other suppliers, such as Iceland, Norway and ROW. Import demand forecasts showed that market share in the EU should remain relatively unchanged given the trend in prices.

Examining the Evolving Correspondence Between Petroleum Prices and Agricultural Commodity Prices AgEcon
Campiche, Jody L.; Bryant, Henry L.; Richardson, James W.; Outlaw, Joe L..
Over the last few years, the production of renewable fuels has increased dramatically. Rising oil prices, limited supplies of fossil fuel, and increased concerns about global warming have created a growing demand for renewable energy sources. Both the ethanol and biodiesel industries have experienced tremendous growth in the past few years. The production of these fuels is highly dependent on the availability of agricultural feedstocks. This research examined the covariability between crude oil prices and corn, sorghum, sugar, soybeans, soybean oil, and palm oil prices during the 2003-2007 time period. Johansen cointegration tests revealed no cointegrating relationships during the 2003-2005 time frame. However, corn prices and soybean prices were...

The Nexus Land-Use Model, an Approach Articulating Biophysical Potentials and Economic Dynamics to Model AgEcon
Souty, Francois; Brunelle, Thierry; Dumas, Patrice; Dorin, Bruno; Ciais, Philippe; Crassous, Renaud.
Interactions between food demand, biomass energy and forest preservation are driving both food prices and land-use changes, regionally and globally. This study presents a new model called Nexus Land-Use which describes these interactions through a generic representation of agricultural intensification mechanisms. The Nexus Land-Use model equations combine biophysics and economics into a single coherent framework to calculate crop yields, food prices, and resulting pasture and cropland areas within 12 regions inter-connected with each other by international trade. The representation of cropland and livestock production systems in each region relies on three components: (i) a biomass production function derived from the crop yield response function to inputs...

Measuring the Efficiency Effect of Banning Anti-Microbial Growth Promoters: The Case of Danish Pig Production AgEcon
Lawson, Lartey Godwin; Sauer, Johannes; Jensen, Peter V.; Jensen, Helen H..
This study examines the effect of banning antimicrobial growth promoters on efficiency in the production of weaned and slaughter (finishing) pigs. We focus on the reaction of producers and production efficiency. We evaluate the estimated output and input shadow prices relative to market prices to analyse producer reactions and capture the impact on production efficiency by evaluating the effects of the ban changes on total factor productivity. To this end we model a multi product shadow profit function and incorporate output and input related shadow prices by using a second order flexible functional form. The development in total factor productivity is subsequently measured by calculating the Malmquist index on the farm level. To make infer-ences on the...

A Hedonic Analysis on the Implicit Values of Fresh Tomatoes AgEcon
Huang, Chung L.; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
The food habits and dietary patterns of American consumers are changing and they are increasingly demanding food products that possess certain attributes relating to how the food was produced or processed. The objectives of the study are to analyze household purchase of fresh tomatoes and to determine the magnitudes of the price premium paid for the organic tomatoes by estimating a hedonic price model. The study uses the 2003 ACNielsen Homescan panel data. The data set represents a nationally representative panel of U.S. households, which provide food purchase data for at-home consumption. For empirical implementation, parameters of the hedonic model were estimated using the Box-Cox transformation procedure. The results indicated that consumers value the...

Analyzing Market Price Transmission, Government Intervention and Weather Shocks for Rice Market in the Philippines AgEcon
Jolejole-Foreman, Maria Christina; Mallory, Mindy L..
In the Philippines, where rice is considered the most important food crop, attempts to influence rice prices have been prevalent. The government, through National Food Authority (NFA) has sought to establish stocks and control imports to stabilize prices since its establishment in 1972 to support farm gate prices and reduce retail price of rice. But data shows divergence in retail prices and farm prices since mid 1960s. In this paper, we use vector autoregression (VAR) to analyze the movement of Philippine rice margins with government stocks and weather supply shocks to able to determine government effectiveness in actual times of market stress. Comparing VARs across regions, we are able to identify the regions in which price margins are significantly...
