The EU has new requirements for the import of organic products replacing the import authorizations by a system where certification bodies operating in Third countries will be approved by the EU Commission. The new system has the potential to increase the efficacy of the control system in Third Countries, to reduce the bureaucracy for international trade and competitive disadvantages for non-European certification bodies. However clear criteria for the assessment of compliancy and equivalency and thorough supervision of certification bodies are necessary to maintain and improve the organic integrity for imported products. |

The EU regulation governing organic production will require 100% organic feed in organic dairy systems from August 2005 compared with 85% currently in Norway. This study aimed to assess adjustments in resource use and financial impacts on organic dairy herds using a discrete stochastic programming model. Farm management effects of the regulatory change varied between farm types. For the two organic dairy systems examined, both having a milk quota of 100 000 litres but with varying farmland availability, the introduction of the 100% organic feed regulation resulted in an economic loss of approximately 6-8% of the net income compared to the current regime. The economic loss was mainly due to the considerable higher price of organic compared to conventional... |

Originally, organic farming was a localised, self-regulating agricultural practice driven by distinct ethical values. In the last decades organic agriculture has undergone significant growth and development, and now it exhibits organic industries and international trade. Today there is a large number of different standards, labels and certification bodies, and this is confusing for consumers, traders and the organic farming industry. The EU regulation 2092/91 can therefore be of high importance for the credibility and harmonisation of organic standards. The overall objective of this research project is to provide recommendations for development of the EU regulation for organic agriculture. The project will identify the basic ethical values and value... |

POSTER In Germany organic stakeholders largely reject the draft of the revised EU Organic regulation. This was evident at a workshop held within the framework of the ORGAP project, which brought together leading representatives of the organic sector in March 2006. The objective of the workshop was to develop indicators on the evaluation of the European Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming. The concerns voiced by stakeholders on the revision of the regulation were so strong that we consider it appropriate to i) report them and ii) to put them into perspective as a contribution to further discussion. This is the objective of this poster. MANUSCRIPT FOR THE POSTER PRESENTATION (TRANSLATED AND REVISED FROM http://orgprints.org/8515) Shortly before... |

A Parliamentary Inquiry was launched in Western Australia (WA) in December 2017 into how to compensate farmers for economic loss due to contamination by genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Inquiry was prompted by the Marsh v Baxter case. In May 2010, Michael Baxter planted Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GM canola at his farm near Kojonup in the wheat-belt of WA. Next door, farming 477 hectares, were organic farmers Steve and Sue Marsh. GM canola blew over the Marsh farm. The Marsh farm lost its organic certification due to GM contamination. Marsh sued Baxter for damages - the loss of the organic premium. The damages were agreed between the parties at A$85,000. In a protracted legal battle the legal fees amounted to more than A$2 million. Marsh lost the... |

Introduction There have recently been major changes in the regulations governing the production of organic poultry products in the EU. Member States have been required to set Standards for production that meet the minimum set in Regulation (EC) 1804/99 if products, including poultry, are to be sold as organic within the EU. This has raised concerns over consistency of implementation in other Member States, and whether, directly or through derogation, this might lead to competitive advantage over the UK. MAFF were aware that France had drafted derogations in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1804/99, and intended to implement some aspects of the Regulation which were claimed to be more stringent than the basic requirements. The aim of this project... |

The first half of this chapter theoretically explores, from a development policy perspective, the nature of institutional environments for certified organic agriculture. The aims are to understand the conditions required, and the prospects, for organic agriculture to thrive, to present a view of global initiatives for research on organic production, and the current degree of institutionalization of organic farming and organic research at the global level. Through institutional analysis of social incentive structures, or game rules, the chapter analyses how certified organics in the North has been operationalized into a single policy instrument through which multiple development benefits are pursued, i.e. institutionalized in a way that enables and... |

EGTOP (= the Expert Group for Technical advice on Organic Production) aims to provide advice to the European Commission concerning the authorisation of the use of products, substances and techniques in organic farming and processing, to develop or improve organic production rules and, more in general, on any other matter relating to the area of organic production. Frank Oudshoorn from SEGES, Denmark participates in EGTOP since 2018, and he is also active in several work packages in the Organic-PLUS Project. In this presentation, he described the work in EGTOP, where topics selected to be treated by this Group are described and analysed in a dossier, often written by appointed sub-Groups. EGTOP assesses the dossier and makes a decision (advice). Digestate,... |

The Organic Revision project was funded by the EU with the aim of supporting the further development of the EU Regulation 2092/91 on organic production. As part of the project focus groups were run in five European countries on value concepts of organic producers and other stakeholders, during 2004-2005. The project aims to provide an overview of values held among organic stakeholders, and of similarities and differences among the various national and private organic standards. In the UK, three focus groups with producers were carried out, one in England and two in Wales. Two of these groups were with established producers and one group were newly converted producers. A further focus group was held with researchers and professionals from Organic... |
